Eight humans

From Undertale Wiki
(Redirected from Seven human SOULs)

Every human that falls down here meets the same fate.
I have seen it again and again.
They come.
They leave.
They die.
You naive child... If you leave the RUINS...
They... ASGORE... Will kill you.

Toriel

The eight humans are the humans from the surface who fell through the barrier on Mount Ebott into the underground. Among them are the fallen human, the protagonist, and the six other unnamed human SOULs that Asgore has collected.

Each SOUL mode and colored attack type corresponds to one of the seven humans that fell before the protagonist.

Main story

History

Before the events of Undertale, seven human children[1] fell into the underground and died on their journey through the underground.

Asriel, Asgore's son, found and befriended the fallen human. The royal family subsequently adopted the human. At one point, the fallen human became deathly ill due to consuming buttercups, and requested to see the golden flowers found in their village on the surface. However, monsters could not fulfill this request, as no one could cross the barrier.

Upon the human's death, Asriel absorbed their SOUL; the human, who also had control of the shared body, carried their own body through the barrier to their village.[2] The humans on the surface attacked and fatally wounded Asriel, thinking he took the human child's life.

Asriel retreated back to the underground with the fallen human's body, where he ultimately collapsed and died in the Throne Room in New Home. The deaths of his children prompted Asgore to declare war on humanity and pledged to kill any human that entered the underground.[3] Toriel, disgusted by his actions, retrieved the fallen human's body and left for the Ruins.[4]

Sometime after the fallen human fell in 201X,[5][6][7] six humans climbed Mount Ebott, fell into the underground, and died. It is unknown how far they had made through the underground, aside from all of them leaving the Ruins.[1] Each of them had their associated items, but it is unknown why they climbed the mountain or how the items were scattered. Asgore collected each of their SOULs for later use, placing the humans' bodies in coffins in New Home's basement.

The protagonist is the eighth human to fall, and their SOUL is the last one needed to break the barrier permanently.[8]

Neutral Route

The coffins holding the bodies of previous fallen humans are found in New Home. The fallen human's coffin is empty, as Toriel took their body with her to the Ruins.[9] Toriel presumably buried them under the flowerbed of golden flowers, which is where the protagonist is found at at the start of Undertale.

Near the end of the Neutral Route, Asgore reveals the six human SOULs, which Flowey ultimately absorbs to become Omega Flowey.

During six segments of Omega Flowey's fight, each human SOUL attacks the protagonist's SOUL, using attacks themed after their associated items found throughout the game. Pressing the ACT button that appears during each segment prompts the protagonist to call for help. Each SOUL then answers the protagonist's call and aids them with healing green attacks. Flowey's defense drops slightly every time the protagonist calls to one of the SOULs for help. After the protagonist defeats him, Flowey tries to repeatedly reload his SAVE to reload the game and finish the protagonist, but the human SOULs eventually intervene and betray him, reverting him to his original form.

After the credits, Sans calls and tells the protagonist that the SOULs have disappeared, precluding the plan of breaking the barrier with them.[10]

True Pacifist Route

On the True Pacifist Route, Toriel tells Asgore that he only needed one SOUL to leave the underground and that he could have spared the other fallen humans if he had peacefully collected the other six from the surface.[11]

Flowey absorbs the six human SOULs and most of monsterkind's SOULs to transform into Asriel. Shortly after, Asriel becomes the "God of Hyperdeath" and battles the protagonist.

After the protagonist saves the Lost Souls, Asriel reverts to his childlike form, destroys the barrier, and releases the SOULs.

During the epilogue, the protagonist finds that the coffins in New Home's basement are now open, and that the fallen human's coffin has mummy wrappings inside.[12]

Genocide Route

After the protagonist kills Undyne the Undying, she mentions that Alphys will instruct Asgore to absorb the six human SOULs, likely in order to defeat the protagonist. The six human SOULs, barring the fallen human, do not appear in any capacity by the end of the route outside of the coffins found in New Home.

At the end of the Genocide Route, the fallen human appears in person. They state that "determination" and a "human soul" brought them back from death, and that with guidance they realized the purpose of this reincarnation was power.[13] It is unknown whether they are speaking to the player or the protagonist.

The fallen human attacks the screen, dealing unreadable levels of damage, and the game closes (on the console versions, the screen blacks out for 30 seconds until howling wind is heard). After launching it again, the fallen human appears after ten minutes and offers to recreate the world in exchange for a SOUL, most likely the protagonist's.

List of human SOULs

During the fight against Omega Flowey, the SOULs attack the protagonist with their related weapons found throughout the game. When playing the Ball Game, the protagonist may achieve any of seven flag colors, all with a different message and each corresponding to one of the SOUL colors (Red, Light Blue, Orange, Blue, Purple, Green, and Yellow.)

The following is a list of SOUL colors and the details associated with them.

Outside of Undertale

In the Undertale 10th Anniversary Stream, a Froggit elaborates on the nature of the humans who fell before the protagonist. It states that they were all different people with their own personalities, and they each handled the underground differently.[16] Some of the humans stayed with Toriel in the Ruins for a prolonged period of time, while others were terrified of her and ran from her immediately.[17]

Trivia

  • In Deltarune, seven flowers can be seen on the second floor of the Flower King shop. Six correspond with the colors of the human SOULs and the seventh is golden, similar to Flowey or the golden flowers.
