Toby Fox
Robert F. "Toby" Fox,[3][4] (born October 11, 1991[2]), historically known as FwugRadiation or simply Radiation; is a music composer and video game developer. He is best known for developing the critically acclaimed RPG Undertale and producing its soundtrack in 2015. He often portrays himself in video games and on the internet using an avatar of a pixelated white dog, known as the Annoying Dog.
Toby Fox was born on October 11, 1991[2] to Robert and Barbara Fox in Manchester, New Hampshire.[5] Toby had three brothers, with whom he programmed role-playing video games using RPG Maker 2000.[6] Being the son of a retired paraprofessional in Manchester schools, Toby was schooled in Manchester High School Central;[5] and would later be a student at Northeastern University, in Boston.[7]
Fox originally started out as a forum member at the EarthBound fansite STARMEN.NET under the alias "Radiation", where he managed the website's PK Hack forum up until 2011.[8] He first entered the public eye with EarthBound: Halloween Hack, also known as Press the B Button, Stupid!, a romhack game submission for STARMEN.NET's 2008 Halloween Funfest.[9][10][11][12]
Toby had discovered Homestuck in the later 2000s. In 2010, the work of the Homestuck Music Team's musicians inspired him to become a music composer, with him implementing as many motifs from the other musicians as he could.[13] His work with Homestuck caused him to amass a considerable fanbase within the webcomic's community. Toby later became friends with the webcomic's creator Andrew Hussie, whom he closely worked with when he became the leader of the Homestuck Music Team, organizing the musicians and editing their tracks to fit with the comic's scenes.[14] Through Homestuck, he had also first conversed with Temmie Chang via Tumblr in regards to one of her fanarts for the webcomic.[15]
Toby Fox's ambition to create his own video game started while he was in college, during a night when he was sleeping with a high fever; in which he had a very clear fever dream about the ending of a game. This video game would eventually become Deltarune, to which Undertale started as a stepping stone.[16]
Fox began coding Undertale on January 11, 2013.[17] He used the video game engine Game Maker 8, as well as Microsoft Paint for the design of sprites.[18] The program Fox used to make the music of Undertale was FL Studio; according to music tags in the beta version of Stronger Monsters from his website and the tracks he made for Temmie Chang's RPG, he uses FL Studio 10.[19] Development for Undertale was partially made during Fox's stay in Andrew Hussie's basement.[20][21]
Toby first publicly announced this video game in the PK Hack section of STARMEN.NET, where he posted a screenshot of the game and a song used in it (which was an early version of Enemy Approaching),[22][23] and he jokingly claimed that the game would be an EarthBound ROM hack called UnderBound 2.[24] On May 2, 2013, Fox sent a demo of Undertale to the video game merchandising company Fangamer;[25] after being met with positive reviews, a public demo was later released on May 23, 2013.[26] Undertale was later funded thanks to a Kickstarter campaign that raised $51,124 from 2,398 people.
During the 10th Anniversary Stream, Toby stated that he enjoyed creating character personalities that do not always align with their appearance, as he considers it accurate to reality.[27] This also includes wanting all NPCs to have different sprites, personalities, and quirks.[28]
Along with being the main developer and composer of the game, Fox is credited with the conception of the following characters;
- Froggit and Final Froggit
- Whimsun
- Moldsmal
- Vegetoid (with Temmie)
- Migosp
- Napstablook
- Papyrus (with Temmie) and Sans (both of them with special inspiration by J.N. Wiedle)
- Gyftrot (possibly)
- Doggo
- Dogamy and Dogaressa (possibly)
- Lesser Dog and Greater Dog (both with Temmie)
- Undyne (design only)
- Alphys (design)
- Moldbygg
- Mad Dummy
- Mad Mew Mew (with Temmie and Gigi D.G.)
- Shyren
- Mettaton (special inspiration by Pauli Kohberger, Sarah, and J.N. Wiedle)
- Tsunderplane
- Pyrope
- Royal Guards
- Whimsalot
- Astigmatism
- Madjick
- Knight Knight
- Asgore and Toriel
Toby Fox has cited several games that served as inspiration during Undertale's development. These include:
- moon: Remix RPG Adventure, for numerous concepts and themes;[29]
- MOTHER 3, for boss battles and possibly the prominent usage of leitmotifs;[30]
- the Touhou Project series by ZUN, for music and gameplay;[31]
- Shin Megami Tensei, for the ACT and MERCY options.[32]
Toby Fox has often avoided being interviewed. Hence, his personal life is largely unknown.[33]

- On 2023's April Fools' Day, Toby Fox "accidentally" sent a picture of himself covered in a large amount of foam to some of the "TRUCK FREAK" subscribers to the Undertale/Deltarune newsletter.[35] People subscribed to the "Foam Shower" tier also received several other images, with the previous image of Toby photoshopped into them.[36]
- Toby Fox has visited this wiki's Dog Residue article[37] and commented on a piece of misinformation on the Papyrus article claiming that the character was inspired by Octopimp.[38][39]
- Toby has vaguely mentioned this wiki in regards to him fixing glitches for the game, as he had assumed no one would be able to read a wiki page for the glitch.[40]
- Toby Fox and Temmie Chang animated a commercial for Kenny Omega when he had a wrestling match in Japan. The commercial uses music used in Undertale and is stylised as Undertale's gameplay.[41]
- Toby Fox is embarrassed by EarthBound: Halloween Hack in the present day, dubbing it a "bad ROM hack with swears".[42][43]
- Toby Fox made music for Temmie's thesis film.[44]

Back in 2010, I was a high school student with no aspirations for music composing at all - that was, until I discovered this webcomic which I really liked. You see, the comic's animated sequences had music created by a team of very talented musicians - the Homestuck Music Team. I wanted nothing more than to be part of my beloved comic just like them. So one day, when a call was put up for additional musicians, I instantly took this opportunity to "become a composer". I made some bad music, sent it over, and... the author of the comic added me to the group!

Well, I didn't want to waste the opportunity of being added, so I tried really hard to make as much music as I could, combining as many motifs as I could from the other musicians. It was that experience which forged me into the the composer I am today. - ↑ Andrew Hussie, About EOA5, part 1. Tumblr

Additionally, thanks to my association with the comic, I gained a following on social media, which really helped me when I made a Kickstarter for my game UNDERTALE. (You know, the thing which enabled me to make the game). I even initially reached out to Temmie specifically because of a Homestuck fanart she did on Tumblr.

FL Studio 10 is used for music, with many free soundfonts and VSTs.

... Anyway, you can see how this inspired UNDERTALE. Even though I didn't play it (it's in Japanese.) - ↑
MOTHER 3 was a really influential game to me. If I hadn't played it, I never would have created the Toriel battle, or, well, any of the other boss battles in the game. It also probably influenced how I try to re-use motifs in my songs, now that I think about it...

I've been a fan of Touhou since I was 10 years old... It's quite a big inspiration to me both musically and gameplay-wise, so if you enjoyed the bullet patterns in UNDERTALE, please check it out sometime. ヨホ

The ACT and MERCY commands were inspired by Shin Megami Tensei. I played just a bit of that game and loved talking to the monsters in it. Since I liked it so much, I decided I wanted to make a game where that was actually the main focus.
