Gyftrot

From Undertale Wiki

Gyftrot (JP: ギフトロット) is a monster the protagonist can find in Snowdin. They can be encountered outside of the mysterious door's cave, where sets of eyes peer out of the wall.

Profile

Appearance

Gyftrot visually resembles a brown reindeer, except with a distinct face. Gyftrot's ears are on top of their head, their eyes are on the front, and they have a vertical jaw with sharp teeth, resembling Omega Flowey. Their antlers branch in three different directions, with two of them pointing up and have pine trees. They also appear to have a pair of eyes at the base of their antlers. Other basic details are the four polka dots on their back (three in their overworld sprite), and the variety of decorations they have on. The protagonist can either add googly eyes to Gyftrot, or undecorate them.

Personality

Gyftrot is a paranoid and irritated monster. This behavior arose due to teenage monsters prank decorating them without their consent.[3] When encountered, Gyftrot becomes very irritated from the protagonist's "youthful demeanor".[4] Defying this, if the protagonist undecorates them, Gyftrot calms down and starts to trust the protagonist. However, if the protagonist decorates them afterward, Gyftrot becomes angry and disappointed. According to a Cell Phone call from Papyrus, Gyftrot likes receiving gifts.[5]

Etymology

Gyftrot's name is likely a combination of "gift" and "trot". The word "gift" may refer to Gyftrot's Christmas theme and may also be a hint that the protagonist should Gift them; "trot" may refer to the way that Gyftrot walks. Although they are never seen walking in-game, it can be assumed from their name and appearance that Gyftrot would walk like a reindeer or a deer.

Main story

If Papyrus has been spared and no Gyftrots have been killed, a Gyftrot can be found as an NPC in the same area they were fought in.

According to Gift Bear, it is implied that Gyftrot was the monster decorated by teenagers. After monsters gifted the decorated monster, it inspired a Christmas-like tradition in Snowdin.[3] The Gyftrot NPC later reaffirms that the holiday was inspired by their suffering.[6]

True Pacifist Route

In True Pacifist Route epilogue, Gyftrot is one of the few monsters that choose to stay in the underground, wanting "peace and quiet".[7]

In the True Pacifist ending credits, Gyftrot's white and yellow descriptions appear reversed, as their white description aligns with them wanting to be left alone. Gyftrot's yellow description is "Christmas Display", despite the protagonist needing to undecorate Gyftrot to spare them.

Attacks

  • From the bottom of the bullet board, three presents shuffle then rise, with one being blue. They may be stationary or moving when they rise.
  • Snowflakes fall from above in wave patterns.

Strategy

At the start of the battle, Gyftrot has three random decorations on them. The protagonist can spare Gyftrot after removing all three decorations.

When fully undecorated, the protagonist can give Gyftrot a gift. However, if the protagonist decorates them after undecorating them, Gytrot becomes angry and refuses any Gifts the protagonist offers during the encounter.
