Aaron

From Undertale Wiki

Aaron (JP: アーロン) is an enemy that appears in Waterfall.

Profile

Appearance

Aaron is a brown, muscular merhorse (or sea horse) with black hair, twelve-pack abs, and a long, winding green tail with a black tip.

Personality

Aaron's lines are vaguely flirty as well as creepy, and he adds a winking face to the end of every line he speaks. He enjoys flexing his muscles, and if the protagonist chooses the "Flex" ACT in battle, he challenges them to a flexing contest. Aaron seems to be attracted by flexing and can appear even in battles that do not involve him if the protagonist chooses "Flex", annoying any Temmies present and causing them to leave.

Aaron dislikes Napstablook's tunes and Shyren's singing.[2]

Etymology

Aaron is named after and based on a friend of Toby Fox.[3]

Main story

If Undyne has been spared and no Aarons have been killed, one Aaron can be found in the area where the Monster Kid helps bring the protagonist up a ledge. He has new dialogue if spoken to by the end of the True Pacifist Route.

In battle

Appears with

  • Temmie (After using the "Flex" ACT, which causes Temmie to flee)
  • Woshua

Attacks

  • Flexing muscular arms move upward from the right and left sides of the bullet board. They speed up as the seconds go by.
  • Sweat falls straight & diagonally from the top of the box.

Strategy

  • To spare him, the protagonist must flex at Aaron by choosing the "Flex" ACT. The first time, he takes it as a challenge to a flexing contest; the second time, he flexes harder; and the third time, he flexes so hard that he "flexes right out of the room", leaving the battle.
    • After each flex, the protagonist and Aaron have increased attack.
    • If Aaron appears due to flexing at a Temmie, he only requires one flex to leave.
  • If "Joke" is selected while fighting Aaron and Woshua, Aaron becomes spareable.
  • If the protagonist plays one of Napstablook's music CDs, Aaron and Woshua are encountered in the room with the SAVE Point in front of Napstablook's house. Instead of fighting, they are immediately scared off by how spooky the music is, unlocking the yellow text in the True Pacifist ending credits.
    • After this event, his encounter dialogue is different, and it is possible to make Aaron leave in battle by choosing the "Shoo" ACT.

Creation and development

Aaron was created after Toby Fox's friend, also named Aaron, jokingly requested to be added into the game as a strong, muscular monster.[4] Toby exaggerated the design with large muscles to "troll" Temmie Chang, as she disliked muscles.[5] In the UNDERTALE Art Book regarding Aaron, it is also mentioned that Temmie Chang dislikes horses.[3] Aaron is featured in several Undertale trailers.

Outside of Undertale

Aaron makes an appearance in Chapter 2 of Deltarune dining out at QC's Diner, where he is shown seated next to Charles's counterpart Hat Monster.

Trivia

  • When "Aaron" is chosen as the fallen human's name, the response becomes "Is this name correct? ; )"
  • Aaron's muscular design and the line "Education? Hobby? Talent?" are references to the character Dir. HR from Breath of Fire II.[6][7]
  • Toby is aware of the Homestuck connection to this enemy, said connection being with the character Equius Zahhak, a sweaty & muscular troll who is obsessed with horses.[8]
  • Aaron's hurt sprite is used by most monsters as their default sprite. If a normally unspareable monster is spared through hacking, their spared sprite appears as Aaron's hurt sprite.
  • Aaron is one of the monster species making up the Amalgamate Lemon Bread; specifically, Lemon Bread is spared by flexing, an ACT adopted specifically from Aaron, and Lemon Bread appears to have Aaron's bicep attached to its body and the ends of Aaron's tails for eyes. She confirms this at the end of a True Pacifist Route, where she comments that her other parts do not look forward to seeing Aaron.
  • Aaron is one of the few monsters who rewards more GOLD when spared than when killed.
