Glyde

From Undertale Wiki

OK! I rule! I admit it!

Glyde, being applauded

Glyde (JP: グライド) is an optional miniboss that can only be encountered outside of the mysterious door in Snowdin.

To encounter Glyde, the protagonist must enter the mysterious door's cave and move for at least two minutes. This encounter must happen before the fight with Papyrus, and any fleeable Snowdin enemies must not have been killed. Otherwise, Glyde does not appear. Alternatively, if at least one monster was killed, the encounter must happen before the date with Papyrus and before Snowdin's kill counter is exhausted at 16 kills.

Profile

Appearance

Glyde is a monster resembling a whale (or a flying fish). It has no legs, and it floats slightly above the ground. The fins on its sides form a crescent shape, and its tail ends in a circular opening, from which it summons its magical attacks. Glyde constantly has a huge, toothy grin on its face.

While it is never seen on the overworld in Undertale, it was found there in the 10th Anniversary Stream; according to its sprite, it has a black body, rainbow stripes on its wings, and a yellow tail.

Personality

Glyde is excessively pretentious and rude, which is present through its actions and words. Glyde does anything to get the protagonist's attention, and even gets jealous of itself at times.

Etymology

The name Glyde is an obsolete spelling of glide, referring to how Glyde has no legs and can be seen as floating or levitating.

Main story

Glyde does not appear in the True Pacifist ending credits.

In battle

Attacks

  • Waves of star-shaped bullets are sent towards the protagonist, similar to Omega Flowey.
  • Same as before, but larger, exploding versions of star-shaped bullets accompany it in-between waves, random words appearing after a huge star explodes:
    • COOL
    • VIBIN
    • RAD
    • NICEY
    • SPICEY
    • SWEET
    • SICK
  • Rarely, Glyde says one of its lines as if about to perform a normal attack, but then no projectiles appear.[3] The probability of this happening is 1%.

Strategy

To spare it, the protagonist must applaud it twice and then either do "nothing" three times or "nothing" twice followed by "boo".

If attempting to fight, the first "boo" will raise Glyde's AT by 2 but lower its DF by 10.

Creation and development

Glyde artwork concept.gif
Official concept art of Glyde by Mike Reid.

Glyde was designed by Mike Reid as a bought-in character during Undertale's Kickstarter.[4] Reid states Glyde was originally designed with yellow eyes in its original pen sketch, but was otherwise black-and-white, like the battle sprite seen in the game.[5]

Trivia

  • Glyde may be a reference to the Mortasheen monster, Twileye, in both shape and personality. Mortasheen is a fictional world full of monsters created by Jonathan Wojcik.
    • Mike Reid describes a group of "glydes" as a fleet, stating he had airplanes and "a big flying sky whale" in mind when designing it.[6]
  • Glyde's encounter method may have been inspired by the requirements to enter Belch's Factory in MOTHER 2 / EarthBound, where Ness must stand still for three minutes to enter.
  • Glyde was intended to only be encounterable once. However, due to a programming error,[7] Glyde can be encountered multiple times.
