Loox

From Undertale Wiki

Please don't pick on me.

Loox

Loox (JP: ルークス) (/ˈluːks/) is a monster encountered in the Ruins. His Hard Mode and CORE counterpart is Astigmatism.

Profile

Appearance

Loox is bipedal and has two horns on the top of his head, a large eye on his face, and teeth under his eye.

Personality

Loox does not like it when people pick on him, though is also a bit hypocritical in that he also picks on other people (as suggested by flavor text when encountering a Loox and another enemy.) His description in the True Pacifist ending credits implies that he is less of a bully, and a "reformed bully" if the protagonist does not pick on him.

Etymology

"Loox" is a corruption of looks. Both his first and last names allude to his single prominent eye. His full name, Loox Eyewalker, is a pun that references Luke Skywalker, a prominent character from the Star Wars franchise.

Main story

The Library Loox is an NPC in the Snowdin Library, who comments on the protagonist's choice between the Junior Jumble or the crossword being more difficult.

In battle

Appears with

Attacks

  • Loox makes five small spheres appear from either side of the bullet board, which move and bounce around the board while slowly gaining speed.
    • After selecting "Pick On", the spheres are faster than normal.
  • Loox makes several small sphere-worms appear from either side of the bullet board, which wiggle their way forward and disappear when hitting the edge of the bullet board.
    • After selecting "Pick On", these sphere-worms become more abundant and are faster than normal.

Strategy

  • Choosing "Don't Pick On" allows the protagonist to spare this monster.
  • Picking on him does not allow the protagonist to spare him, but it awards five extra EXP. However, if a Loox has an EXP value of 20 or more, picking on him does not increase his EXP value, which allows for a maximum of 24. This can be used to get extra EXP and thus making upcoming battles easier.
    • Any given instance of Loox starts out with a reward of 7 EXP. "Don't Pick On" reduces the EXP reward by 2 if the EXP reward is greater than 4. "Pick On" increases the EXP reward by 5 if the EXP reward is less than 20 and if that instance of Loox is not spareable (spareability from ATK does not count for this). The amount of EXP that can be earned is 3-24 depending on the protagonist's actions.
    • In order to get 24 EXP from Loox, perform the following ACTs:
      • Pick On x3 (7 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 22)
      • Don't Pick On x4 (22 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 = 14)
      • Pick On x3 (14 + 5 + 5 = 24)

Trivia

  • Loox's idle animation is faster when picked on. The animation reverts back to a normal speed once "Don't Pick On" is chosen.
  • Loox's line "Please don't pick on me" is a direct quote of the pumpkin-head ghost boss from the game Monster Party, who says this line immediately before attacking.[3]
  • Loox's appearance resembles Mike Wazowski from Monsters, Inc. and the Ahriman from the Final Fantasy series. Relatedly, the overworld sprite of the Library Loox is called spr_npc_mikewazowski in the game files.
  • Loox was the first enemy to be designed by Temmie Chang.[4]

    Please don’t pick on me.
This seems like a simple, unimportant message at first, until the player is literally given the menu options “Pick On” and “Don’t Pick On”. Picking on Loox will make him more difficult to defeat, while not picking on him will allow the player to spare him.
