3D Toriel

From Undertale Wiki

3D Toriel (JP: 3Dトリエル)[2] is a recurring figure depicted in promotional material for Undertale, such as release trailers and merchandise.

Profile

Appearance

3D Toriel is a crude 3D model of Toriel. Her face, ears, and limbs consist of spherical figures. She wears a blank expression, and her arms are stretched out to form a T-pose. She is capable of shooting lasers out of her eyes.

Personality

3D Toriel often performs actions that are not depicted in Undertale and are out-of-character for Toriel. She seems to be a hostile entity who rarely speaks and is liable to attack at any moment, using her abilities, which include laser eyes. In the 6th Anniversary Stream, she is shown speaking gibberish before attacking the hosts.

Depictions

While 3D Toriel never appears within Undertale itself, she does appear in numerous Undertale-related contexts.

Release trailers

3D Toriel is first depicted in the original release trailer for Undertale, which was published on September 8, 2015.[3] One scene near the end of the trailer shows the figure ramming into a wall of white blocks, accompanied by a realistic goat and the text "my child you are breaking my heart". The disclaimer "PROBABLY NOT ACTUAL GAME FOOTAGE?" is written at the bottom. This scene is repeated in the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita announcement trailer on June 13, 2017, accompanied by the "Beauty" border awarded for completing Hard Mode.[4]

The 3D Toriel scene was changed in the Nintendo Switch release trailer on September 17, 2018.[5] The scene depicts Mad Mew Mew running from 3D Toriel as she shoots her with her lasers. The accompanying text reads "my child i shall break your heart", and the disclaimer at the bottom reads "TOBY WHERE IS THIS FOOTAGE EVEN COMING FROM??"

3D Toriel makes a brief appearance in the Xbox One announcement trailer published on March 15, 2021.[6] Here, the figure is seen spinning in place along with two wireframe copies. Accompanying text at the bottom reads "PEAK TORIEL PERFORMANCE".

Anniversary streams

3D Toriel makes an appearance in the Undertale 6th Anniversary Stream.[7] Here, she walks into the room, speaks gibberish, and shoots lasers at the stream's hosts before the stream pauses.

3D Toriel makes another appearance in the Undertale 10th Anniversary Stream.[8] Noticing that she is a piñata, Reid Young brandishes a bat and swings at her, despite the other stream hosts' insistence that he do not. As he hits her, the screen cuts to a hybrid mashup of the 3D Toriel scenes in the Undertale trailers before cutting back to the set. The camera focuses on 3D Toriel staring at the screen before cutting to black.

UNDERTALE Art Book

Toriel's 3D figure also appears in the UNDERTALE Art Book, with a description stating that Toby Fox created it for an "extremely realistic, emotional scene". The scene had to be cut because "it looked so good, it made the rest of the game look terrible" and replaced with Onionsan.[9]

Merchandise

On April 1, 2026, Fangamer revealed a keychain of 3D Toriel, designed by Melora Mylin.

Creation and development

3D Toriel was designed by a "professional artist" (labeled as "Laura MW, Adil Mohyuddin" in the UNDERTALE Art Book[10]) and later rendered into 3D by Chelsea Saunders.[9]

  9. 1 2 We created this high-fi 3D Toriel for an extremely realistic, emotional scene. I even hired a professional artist to create a new character design that could properly convey the depth of the scene. Afterwards, Chelsea rendered the sketch flawlessly into 3D.
Sadly, the scene had to be cut because it was so good, it made the rest of the game look terrible. So I took the opposite approach and replaced it with Onionsan. And that’s why anyone likes UNDERTALE.
Chelsea’s comment: “This is the best thing I ever made. And while I respect Toby’s decision, I’ll be filled with regret for the rest of my life.”
