Temmie

Temmie (JP: テミー) (/ˈtɛ.miː/) is a species of monster in the underground. They appear as a unique enemy in Waterfall, residents of Temmie Village, and the vendor of Tem Shop. She is Temmie Chang's self-insert character.

Profile

Appearance

Temmies resemble dogs, with cat-like ears on top of their heads as well as dog ears on the sides, shoulder length black hair, and blue shirts, excluding the Temmie Shopkeeper, who has gray hair and a striped blue and yellow shirt instead.

Personality

All Temmies share an erratic manner of speech, where they often exclude letters, mix lower and upper cases, make inconsistencies, etc. There are some exceptions, however; Bob always speaks in perfect English, the Temmie Shopkeeper speaks in fluent English when the protagonist refuses to sell an item she wants, and regular Temmies in-battle speak in somewhat proper English when denied Temmie Flakes.

In battle, Temmies find the protagonist to be adorable and refer to them as such despite attacking them. However, they also find muscles to be disgusting, as evident by their negative reactions to the protagonist's flexing should they choose the "Flex" option. Because of this, when Aaron, a monster who has tight muscles and an obsession for flexing, appears as a result of the "Flex" option, Temmies are so put off by them that they flee on sight shortly after.

According to one Temmie in Temmie Village, and the text from checking Temmie, the protagonist is allergic to Temmies. It is implied that some Temmies are also allergic to other Temmies, which explains why the one and only Temmie on the far-right was seen with hives, which the affected Temmie quirkily names "hOIVS!"

Etymology

Temmie is named after Temmie Chang, one of the main artists who worked on the game, who makes a cameo in the game through the character.

In battle

Attacks

• One of Temmie's attacks is a tall Temmie shape that stumbles about on the bullet board; the protagonist must remain underneath (or above if out of legs) to avoid taking damage. In the attack, Temmie sluggishly tracks the protagonist's movements, so care must be taken not to move too fast, or she will move off the board entirely, resulting in unavoidable damage.
  • If Temmie is denied Temmie Flakes, Temmie gets annoyed and exclaims "can't blame a BARK for tryin'..." while snd_grandpatemi plays. Afterward, the SOUL appears in front of the attack Temmie, and damage can only be avoided by quickly moving to the top of the bullet board (the head is harmless; only the legs and body deal damage).
• Temmie's secondary attack involves elongating one of her legs in an attempt to wrap it around the protagonist's SOUL. This attack can be avoided by tracing the edges of the bullet board until the SOUL is in the middle, and the leg will contract.

Strategy

• To spare Temmie, the protagonist must talk to her or feed her Temmie Flakes.
• Flexing at Temmie results in her departure and is soon replaced by Aaron. This Aaron can be spared by flexing once as opposed to thrice.
• Sparing Temmie using any method rewards the yellow text in the True Pacifist ending credits.

Creation and development

Betty Kwong's original sketch of Temmie.

Temmie was originally a doodle of Temmie Chang, created as a joke by Betty Kwong. Her appearance is based on what Betty guessed was Temmie's likes, interests, and personality traits. Temmie liked the drawing so much that she used it as a mascot for years until it made an appearance in Undertale.

In the 10th Anniversary Stream, Toby Fox reveals he implemented Temmie even though she was not actually Temmie Chang. The dialogue style was also reminiscent of Temmie's way of talking back in 2015, though Temmie Chang no longer talks this way any more. He also states that Temmie had mixed feelings about being identified with the character so often.

In the game files, Temmie has unused overworld walking sprites. There is also unused code that can control Temmie's long legs attack, which was meant for a minigame.

Outside of Undertale

UNDERTALE 10th Anniversary Stream

In the UNDERTALE 10th Anniversary Stream, a Temmie appears as a student in Hotland High, a new location exclusive to the stream build of the game. However, this Temmie was not interacted with during the stream.

Deltarune

In Deltarune, a lone Temmie representing Temmie Chang appears as a minor character and one of Kris's classmates in Hometown's school. She is academic partners with an egg.

Trivia

• If the fallen human is named "Temmie", the response becomes "hOI!" and allows the name to be used.

The maximum distance Temmie's face will vibrate away from her body.

• If one idles long enough without taking any action against Temmie or using any items, Temmie's face eventually vibrates away from her main sprite. This resets if an attack begins.
• With their strange speech patterns, nonsensical village, and alien demeanor, the Temmies seem inspired by Mr. Saturn of the Mother series.
• When Temmie uses her attack where she stretches out her arm, if the protagonist were to quickly try to feed her Temmie Flakes, and they say no before her entire arm recoils, Temmie's expression overlaps with her normal face.
