Hopes and Dreams is the 87th track in the UNDERTALE Soundtrack. It plays during the first phase of the battle against Asriel at the end of the True Pacifist Route.

It is largely a fast-paced remix of Once Upon a Time, with a similarly fast-paced, hopeful-sounding remix of Your Best Friend at 1:30 and faintly at 1:18. The track is slowed down to 95% speed in-game[1] and in the UNDERTALE Soundtrack.

Allusions

The name of this track is alluded to on multiple locations in both Undertale and Deltarune.

Creation and development

  • Hopes and Dreams is inspired by the chiptune-based music of the American pop-rock band Anamanaguchi.[13][14] The band would later release their own cover of the track on YouTube in 2022.
  • In the 10th Anniversary Stream, Toby Fox stated that Hopes and Dreams was the track he worked on the most during development, with the project file having thirteen versions.[15]
  • All of the instruments in Hopes and Dreams are free samples except for the bass and rhythm rock guitar. These instruments are from a version of Shreddage and ReValver which Toby no longer has access to, meaning that he cannot open the original project files.[16]

Outside of Undertale

A small, low-quality segment of this song was featured as transit songs for Shadowguy's top 5 Chapter 3 quotes video to tease Deltarune's Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 release. This video was shared on the official UNDERTALE/DELTARUNE Bluesky[17] and Twitter.[18] In order, the songs are Deltarune's Welcome to the Green Room, Undertale's Hopes and Dreams, Stronger Monsters, Deltarune's Vapor Buster, Vs. Susie, and Undertale's Power of "NEO".

Trivia

  • At about 0:21 (when the track kicks into the beat), the visual effects of the battle activate.
    • The effects do not disappear when the track loops.
  • In the UNDERTALE Soundtrack on Spotify, Deezer, and YouTube, the track's title is displayed as "Hopes And Dreams" instead of the A being lowercase.
  • Toby Fox has stated that Hopes and Dreams is personal to him. When he was asked if it could be sampled for a commercial, he offered to instead create a similar, but distinct composition.[19]
  • In the sheet music booklet included in the Undertale Collector's Edition, Toby said there was a period where he played Hopes and Dreams nearly every day on the piano.[20]
  • Hopes and Dreams contains a background motif of Doctor, a Homestuck song by George Buzinkai, at approximately 1:20.[21][22] Toby Fox has previously written music for Homestuck using this motif, including Savior of the Waking World and the never-released Penumbra Phantasm.
