Small bird
The small bird is a minor character in Undertale. Appearing near a disproportionately small gap in Waterfall, it acts as transportation between certain areas that are inaccessible otherwise.
The small bird is a small, yellow bird with black eyes and an orange beak, legs and feet.
The small bird is tiny, yet determined. It is eager to carry people across the gap, regardless of how heavy they are or how long it takes. Undyne recounts a story about being lifted across the gap, and she tells the protagonist to "cherish" the bird for its hard work.[1]
The small bird appears in the room containing the disproportionately small gap, which connects the room containing Sans's telescope to the left and the Quiet Area past the garbage dump to the right. When first entering the room from the room containing the telescope, the small bird is seen on the other side of the gap and is inaccessible.
The small bird remains in its spot and can be accessed once the protagonist reaches the Quiet Area. From there, it offers to carry the protagonist over the gap. If they accept, the bird lifts the protagonist off the ground and carries them across while Bird That Carries You Over A Disproportionately Small Gap plays in the background.
If the protagonist is carrying an umbrella, the text "Umbrellas and birds. A bad combination." appears. This prevents the protagonist from carrying the umbrella to other areas of Waterfall and the rest of the underground.
During the True Pacifist ending credits, the small bird can be seen flying above Papyrus.
During the Genocide Route, the small bird can still be seen when entering the room from the left. However, once the protagonist reaches the other side and enters the room from the Quiet Area, the bird does not appear. This prevents the protagonist from accessing the earlier areas of Waterfall until they reach the River Person in Hotland. If the route was aborted by sparing Monster Kid, it reappears.
