Grillby (JP: グリルビー) (/ˈgɹɪl.biː/) is a minor character in Undertale. He is the owner and proprietor of the Grillby's pub, located in Snowdin.
Grillby is a monster made entirely of fire. He wears glasses and a black, long-sleeved suit with a white collar, a gray bow-tie, and black buttons.
Grillby is generally very quiet and does not speak. Red Bird usually speaks for him, though she later admits that her translations are inaccurate.[2] Due to being made of fire, Grillby is implied to have a fear of water.[1]
Grillby is seen in his restaurant, wiping down a glass from behind the counter. During the hangout with Sans at the restaurant, he walks through the "fire exit" in the back to prepare his and the protagonist's orders. If Papyrus is killed, he gets nervous as Sans is his best customer and he has not shown up all day.[3]
Grillby speaks a single line at the end of the True Pacifist Route, where he commends the protagonist on a "good job".
Grillby evacuates along with the rest of Snowdin's inhabitants, leaving his restaurant completely abandoned. Even if Papyrus is spared after this point, he does not return to the restaurant.
The Grillby's Rogues' Gallery comic on Fangamer revealed more information about Grillby. The comic states that he used to live in Hotland, but moved to Snowdin because he prefers the cold.[4] He heats drinks by hand. Sans has sometimes run the bar for Grillby, and done other odd jobs for him on occasion.[5]
Grillby has a picture of a snowman in his image. He used to resent his inability to make a snowman, until two children made the snowman.[6]
