Mystery man
The mystery man[note 1][1] is a hidden character in Undertale. They can be found in Waterfall's fake hallway, after the Crystal area. The hallway only appears if the fun value is 66. The nature of their appearance may suggest a connection to W.D. Gaster.
The mystery man is entirely black and white, and has a tall, half-oval-shaped black body, with a white shape below the head. The figure has a large, white head with a big, toothless smile, a crack in their face connecting the left eye to the mouth, and a crack from the right eye extending up across the head. The right eye never appears fully open, possibly due to the crack on its eyelid. The figure seems to have two white hands at their front, each with a hole.
When they vanish, their facial expression changes. They widen their smile, as well as their eyes, revealing mismatched, white pupils. Their body similarly changes, with the white shape beneath their head being split in two.
If the mystery man is turned upside down, their clothing and hands resemble another face. Before interaction, this face appears to be surprised, but after interaction, it appears calmer, contrary to the mystery man's expression appearing to become more surprised.
The mystery man appears behind a grayscale door in Waterfall's fake hallway. Upon entering the hallway, there is a 1 in 10 chance for the door to appear.
In the room beyond the door, room_mysteryman, the mystery man is present in the center. They do not have a hitbox, but interacting with them causes them to fade away. The sound snd_mysterygo plays as they vanish. This sound effect is shared with Gaster follower 2 and Clam Girl's grayed "goner" form when they disappear.
Upon leaving the room, there is another 1 in 10 chance for the door to appear again, with the mystery man once again being present inside. Once the player exits to the left or right of the fake hallway, their fun value is set to 0, preventing the hallway from appearing again. (If the 1 in 10 chance of the door appearing does not occur, the player is left with no option other than to leave.)
The mystery man appeared faintly on the cover of Fangamer's UNDERTALE Complete Vinyl Soundtrack Box Set for a brief period of time, but the image was removed from later releases.[2] Similarly, the mystery man was featured in the original provisional cover and inside gatefold artworks of the iam8bit's Undertale Vinyl Soundtrack, but was replaced by a SAVE Point in September 2016, along with an Amalgamate and Gaster follower 1 that were next to them in the inside gatefold artwork. The cover artwork also includes a depiction of Redacted, which was not changed.[3][4] No physical edition featuring the original artworks is known.
A mystery man card, labeled "Gaster," was originally included in the Undertale tarot card collection designed by Dogbomber as IX - The Hermit. However, when the collection became officially licensed, the card was replaced by Gerson. Thus, the depiction of the mystery man as Gaster was never used in any official capacity.
Three of the error-handling messages within Deltarune's code can be arranged to create a poem: "Is that a cut on your face, or part of your eye? The gash weaves down as if you cry. The pain itself is reason why."[5][6][7] This may describe the face of the mystery man.

- The mystery man shares some visual similarities with Uboa from Yume Nikki. This resemblance is shared with the version of Dr. Andonuts seen in Toby Fox's EarthBound: Halloween Hack, whose overworld sprite is an edited version of Uboa.
