Mettaton EX

From Undertale Wiki

Mettaton EX (JP: メタトンEX) is the fourth boss in Undertale's Neutral and True Pacifist Route. He is a transformed version of Mettaton who appears at the end of the CORE, blocking the protagonist's way to New Home.

Profile

Appearance

After having the switch on his back flipped, Mettaton transforms into Mettaton EX, a new body he specially requested Alphys make for him.[2][3] In this humanoid form, he has black hair with a long fringe that seems to cover his right eye, pale "skin" and visible metal segments below and above his left eye.

He has a pink chest piece, a narrow metallic waist with a box contraption, and black shoulder pads above his segmented arms, which end in gloves. The chest piece has what appear to be a speaker and some knob or gauge, while the waist has two parts that seem to act as a locking mechanism that holds his "heart-shaped core", as they both lose white pixels during his "heart-to-heart" attack. His long black-clad legs end in pink high-heeled boots.

Main story

Neutral Route

Ohhhh my.
If you flipped my switch, that can only mean one thing.
You're desperate for the premiere of my new body.
How rude...
Lucky for you, I've been aching to show this off for a long time.
So... as thanks, I'll give you a handsome reward.
I'll make your last living moments...
ABSOLUTELY beautiful!

Mettaton after his transformation

Tired of pretending to be a "malfunctioning" robot, Mettaton begins an encounter. Mettaton explains he wishes to save humanity from Asgore's plan for the war, and wants to claim the protagonist's SOUL so he can cross the barrier and earn fame. In his regular form, Mettaton is not vulnerable. During the encounter, Alphys calls the protagonist to inform them of the switch on Mettaton's back. The protagonist tricks Mettaton to turn around by claiming there is a mirror behind him. Mettaton turns around to try to reassess his appearance, and the protagonist toggles his switch. This switch transforms Mettaton into Mettaton EX and begins his premiere.

Mettaton EX battle armless.png
Mettaton lacking his arms.

Whether the protagonist chooses to perform with ACTs or FIGHT, Mettaton EX gradually sustains damage and loses body parts as the battle progresses, starting from his arms, then his legs.

If choosing to ACT, the show's Ratings are visible. The protagonist can raise Mettaton EX's Ratings to above 10,000 (or 12,000, if he still has legs) by taking damage, using popular brand items sold by Burgerpants at the MTT-Brand Burger Emporium, or using specific ACTs and items.

To his surprise, this is the highest-rated episode he has ever had. Mettaton EX acknowledges the viewer call-in milestone was reached, and accepts call-ins from viewers for his finale show in the underground. Several callers, the first of which is Napstablook, convince Mettaton that he is highly valued in the underground, and is the primary (perhaps only) source of entertainment that many of the inhabitants have. He is moved by monsterkind's passion for the show, and decides that he no longer wishes to leave the underground, as well expressing his confidence that the protagonist can defeat Asgore and protect humanity. Mettaton EX also acknowledges his form's inefficient battery consumption, and shuts down, leaving only his upper torso remaining.

Alphys then manages to unlock the door and assess Mettaton EX's state, being thankful that he was simply out of power. She is stressed at the thought of Mettaton being killed.

If Mettaton EX is killed, he reverts to his box form, though irreparably damaged. Examining the wreck warrants the description, "It's completely trashed." Additionally, many monsters throughout Hotland comment on Mettaton's absence,[4] and some are in a somber mood.[5]

True Pacifist Route

After the protagonist has finished their date with Alphys, Mettaton's deactivated body can be found on the second floor of the Lab, atop her work table for repairs.

In the True Lab, there is a log entry stating that Alphys fears that Mettaton may not talk to her anymore after receiving his new body due to his attachment to fame.[3]

At the end of the game, when all of the Monsters encountered as bosses have united before Flowey intervenes, Mettaton EX shows his leg from the right side of the screen. He tells Alphys and Undyne that they should kiss already since the entire crowd wants it.[6]

Epilogue

Mettaton overworld legs.png
Mettaton, as seen in the True Pacifist ending credits.

After defeating Asriel, if the protagonist returns to Waterfall before exiting New Home, Mettaton is seen standing outside his old house, having recruited Napstablook as his sound mixer and Shyren as his backup singer. During the credits, Mettaton is on tour, with Napstablook, Shyren, and Burgerpants also on stage. Mettaton is able to use his original rectangle form in conjunction with his new body's legs.

In battle

Attacks

SOUL modes

Yellow mode is set throughout the battle against Mettaton before and after his transformation.

Patterns

Before transformation
  • Mettaton introduces attacks that are later used when he transforms into Mettaton EX, namely boxes and bombs. If Mettaton is not turned around right away, he deploys a mixture of boxes, bombs, and lightning that cannot be shot by the Yellow SOUL. The lightning attack is not used by Mettaton EX.
After transformation

Mettaton EX's attacks all consist of an arrangement of several objects:

  • Copies of Mettaton's legs stick out from either side of the box and scroll downwards. They can be either moving inwards and outwards or not move; this can be controlled by shooting them, which stops the moving legs or causes the motionless legs to begin moving again.
  • Copies of Mettaton's legs quickly emerge from the side of the screen. An exclamation mark appears in the area that they will appear in before this attack is used.
  • Small rectangular Mettatons glide down on umbrellas. As they reach the bottom of the screen, they begin to toss hearts that are embroidered with the letter M: they will often toss a second set upwards just as they are leaving the bottom of the screen.
  • Bombs marked with a plus sign travel downwards, which explode into plus-shaped blasts when shot with the Yellow SOUL. The blast spreads slowly enough that it can be dodged by moving aside, as long as the bomb was detonated sufficiently far away. The explosions can destroy blocks and trigger other bombs.
  • White squares marked with black circles travel downwards (and sometimes side to side), which are broken by a shot from the Yellow SOUL.
  • The bullet board contracts to four blocks wide, and lines of bombs and white squares with black circles (usually three bombs and one square or three squares and one bomb) travel downward, then a "rewind" button appears and they travel back upward in the same formation, with destroyed parts remaining destroyed.
  • Long segmented arms resembling Mettaton's travel downwards, with sliding orange-yellow boxes along their length which, when shot, toggle the arm between retracted and non-retracted states (thus, they should only be shot once).
  • Mettaton's heart emerges from the square on his waist and shoots lightning-bolt shaped projectiles either in a circular blast formation or single linear shots (which only happens when he loses all of his limbs). Firing at his heart ends Mettaton's attack earlier; not shooting his heart still causes his limbs to fall off due to being a scripted event. Contrary to popular belief, attacking Mettaton's heart this way does not count as FIGHTing him. When only his torso exists, his heart will fight for him for the rest of the battle until he is either killed or the ratings reach 10,000.
  • A disco ball appearing from the top of the square projecting laser beams in either blue or white, which can be toggled in color by shooting the disco ball. They rotate at a variable pace: when blue, they count as blue attacks, when white, as normal attacks.
  • The bullet board contracts to being only two blocks wide, and pairs of objects rain down, consisting of a bomb on one side and a solid white block on the other. The block can only be destroyed by shooting the companion bomb, and so it is necessary to shoot the bomb and quickly move under the block to avoid damage from the downward part of the explosion.
  • Mettaton calls for a "union-regulated break" and the words "Happy Breaktime!" appear on the bullet board. This is a gray attack, and simply a free turn. It always comes after two two-width block / bomb attacks in a row, and Boasting works normally even though it is impossible to get hit during this turn.
Attack Order
Turn Max Boast Ratings Description Details
Box Form
1 - Blank Pea Shooter Dialogue if Mettaton is shot.
2 - Box Swarm A swarm of boxes that slightly shift left and right.
3 - Arms 2 keyless arms that leave space to the left and right to get past by breaking blocks, followed by a regular arm with the yellow square in the center.
4 - Arms + Block Wall 2 Arms with their yellow squares to the left then right, then a wall of blocks with a bomb in the center.
5 - Phone Call Unlocks the "Turn" option to progress to Mettaton EX.
6+ - Spark Swarm A swarm of sparks, blocks, and bombs falls from the top of the screen. Loops until the Turn ACT is selected.
Mettaton EX
1 300 Legs A leg from the left, followed by a leg from the right, followed by two sets of 2 legs. The first two legs must be shot in order to move them out of the way. All can be avoided by not moving up or down.
2 285 Bombs + Bot Swarm 4 Bots on either side with 5 bombs in the middle. Can be cleared by focusing the bots on one side, and then moving up/across the top when the other set starts firing.
3 315 Legs 2 A set of 3 legs from the left, a gap between boxes to move through, then 3 legs from the right.
4 285 Arms An arm with the yellow square to the left, 5 bots, then an arm with the yellow square to the right.
5 3[note 1] Essay See #Essay for essay details.
6 900[note 2] Heart to Heart Mettaton's heart comes out and launches lightning sparks in a circle while two bots come down from the sides. Repeats up to 6 times until the attack ends.

Uses reduced damage table. Hitting the heart enough times ends the attack early.
7 375[note 3] Bot Swarm A swarm of 9 bots comes down from the top of the screen.

Attack ends early if all bots are destroyed.
8 405 Dance After a considerable delay, the disco ball starts rotating the light beams, 5 of which will reach the soul. Shooting the disco ball flips the beams colors. Getting hit 2+ times causes subsequent dance attacks to be slower and take longer.
9 Fast: 289.5 [note 4]
Slow: 405
Dance (Fast) The disco ball starts rotating immediately, and also rotates faster than in the previous attack. 11 beams will reach the soul.

If 2+ hits were taken during turn 8 attack, it behaves identically to that attack instead.
10 315[note 5] Bombs A set of 4 bombs and blocks on alternating sides will come down from the top of the screen. The blocks can only be destroyed the bomb next to them.

Getting hit 2+ times causes the turn 11 bomb attack to be slower, while getting hit all 4 times causes the turn 18 bomb attack to be slower. Destroying the last bomb will end the attack early.
11 240[note 5] Bombs (Fast) A set of 6 bombs and blocks on alternating sides will come down from the top of the screen. The blocks can only be destroyed the bomb next to them.

Getting hit 2+ times in the previous attack causes the bombs to move slower. Destroying the last bomb will end the attack early.
12 165 Break There are no damaging attacks.
13 900[note 2] Heart to Heart (Arms) Mettaton's heart comes out, generates a shield of blocks, launches lightning sparks in a circle while, and launches the blocks out. Repeats up to 4 times until the attack ends.

Uses reduced damage table. Hitting the heart enough times ends the attack early.
14 300 Reverse Sets of 4 bombs/blocks come down from the top of the screen, and then reverse direction when enough time has passed. Only 3 will reach the soul's starting position.

Getting hit 2+ times will cause the next attack to move slower.
15 330 Reverse (Fast) Sets of 4 bombs/blocks come down from the top of the screen faster than the previous attack, and then reverse direction when enough time has passed. Only 3 will reach the soul's starting position, but the 4th will come closer than it did in the previous attack.

If 2+ hits were taken in the previous attack, the walls will be slower and the 4th will not come as close.
16 247.5[note 4] Box + Bomb Swarm A dense swarm of boxes and bombs comes from the top of the screen.
17 220 Box + Bomb Swarm (Fast) A dense swarm of faster boxes and bombs comes from the top of the screen.
18 300[note 5] Bombs (Random) A set of 6 bombs and blocks on random sides will come down from the top of the screen. The blocks can only be destroyed the bomb next to them.

Getting hit 4+ times in turn 10 causes the bombs to move slower. Destroying the last bomb will end the attack early.
19 1050[note 2] Heart to Heart (Legs) Mettaton's heart comes out with two bombs surrounding it. It launches a circle of lightning sparks followed by a swarm of legs coming in from the left than right. Repeats up to 5 times until the turn ends.

Uses reduced damage table. Hitting the heart enough times ends the attack early. After this attack, the amount of ratings needed to spare drops from 12,000 to 10,000.
20 2800[note 2] Heart to Heart (Laser) Mettaton's heart comes out and floats up, before it then makes a fast movement before firing 3 lines of lightning sparks in varying directions relative to the soul's location when it started firing. Repeats up to 19 times until the turn ends. Can be fairly easily dodged by sticking to the bottom and moving left/right the entire way when it starts firing, trying to be on the opposite side as the heart.

Uses alternate reduced damage table. Hitting the heart enough times ends the attack early.

Ratings from most sources boosted during (but not before) this turn, and during (and before) all subsequent turns.
21 Fast: 675.5 [note 4]
Slow: 945
Dance Fast Uses the same attack as turn 9, including slowed version conditions.
22 875[note 3] Bot + Spark Swarm A swarm of 12 lighting sparks and bots comes down from the top of the screen.

Attack ends early if all bots are destroyed.
23 910 Reverse (Long) Sets of 4 bombs/blocks come down from the top of the screen, and then reverse direction when enough time has passed. Only 4 will reach the soul's starting position.
24 700[note 5] Bombs (Random Fast) A set of 7 bombs and blocks on random sides will come down from the top of the screen. The blocks can only be destroyed the bomb next to them.
25 2800[note 2] Loop from 20 Uses the same attack as before and sets the current turn to be turn 20. Followed by turn 21. Unlike turn 20, before this attack, boosted ratings are not obtained from things that take place before this turn.

Damage

Rather than directly using the attack stat, Mettaton EX (and its preceding box form) use custom damage tables in addition to those caused normally by the protagonist's HP. Some of the damage changes can only be seen by the use of armor to survive a hit.

Assuming no armor and LV 1, all attacks, with the exception of the heart-to-heart attacks, generally do 6 damage, or 7 at full HP. This means that 3 consecutive hits can be survived before needing to heal to survive another. Additionally, these attacks always leave the protagonist's HP at 1, which can be exploited for increased ratings from Pose.

Strategy

Death by Glamour soundtrack.png
Mettaton EX in battle, as Death by Glamour plays.

To defeat Mettaton EX without killing him, the protagonist must survive until his arms and legs are blown off and achieve a show rating of 10,000 or more; if his limbs are not blown off, a show rating of 12,000 or more ends the battle.[7] Mettaton's limbs fall off regardless of whether or not his heart is shot, but shooting it ends his turn earlier.

For those who plan on killing Mettaton, methods that decrease ratings should be used, as the ratings may hit 10,000 before the protagonist kills Mettaton. Methods that decrease ratings include writing a curse word during the essay and eating Junk Food, so bringing a full inventory of Junk Food is advised. Waiting between turns also steadily decreases ratings, although only 999 can be lost this way. As well his DF decreases by 5 every turn after turn 20.[8]

Ratings can be boosted in several ways, most of which give extra ratings after 20 turns have passed, which is after the legs have fallen off.

-200 to +360 (see #Essay) 2x if positive[note 12] To get the most ratings (+360), stringing 4 compliments together is necessary, such as in "hotfinenticute[note 13]".
"Leg" grants +350 for only 3 characters.
Certain insults such as "ugly", "jerk", or "idiot" deduct 200 ratings.

Essay

Early in the battle, Mettaton asks the protagonist to write an essay about what they like most about him. Listed by priority:

  • Writing certain swear words or "BEPIS" results in the loss of 150 points, which causes Mettaton to exclaim that the show is family-friendly.
  • Writing "TOBY" earns 300 points, Mettaton saying that Toby sounds sexy.
  • Writing "I LOVE YOU" or "I LOVE YOUR" earns 250 points, Mettaton saying that's a touching confession.
  • Writing a word that Mettaton deems insulting prompts him to tell the protagonist that this is an essay about him, not them. This will lose 200 points.
  • Writing "LEG" earns 350 points, which is the second highest amount, being the 'correct answer.'
  • Writing "DANCING" earns 250 points, Mettaton saying that he is self-taught.
  • Writing "ARMS" earns 250 points, Mettaton commenting that most people talk about his legs, but embrace them for their writing anyways.
  • Writing "VOICE" earns 200 points, Mettaton commenting that he has the voice of a siren.
  • Writing "HAIR" earns 200 points, Mettaton saying that he uses metal hair gel.
  • Writing compliments earns different amounts depending on how many compliments are made. The list includes: beaut, hot, pretty, handsome, gorgeous, sparkl, charm, attract, cute, smokin, good look, goodlook, good-look, grace, comely, fine, looker, dreamboat, stun, shapely, ravishing, allur, entic, seduct, enchant, appeal, adorable, radiant, capitvat[sic].
    • Writing four or more compliments (for example, "HOTFINENTICUTE") earns 360 points, the highest amount that can be achieved.
    • Writing three compliments earns 280 points.
    • Writing two compliments earns 250 points.
    • Writing one compliment earns 200 points.
  • If none of these requirements are met, Mettaton gives points and different remarks based on the length of the essay.
    • Writing less than 13 characters earns 80 points.
    • Writing an essay 13-49 characters long earns 100 points. Mettaton says the protagonist gets a gold star.
    • 50-89 earns 120. Mettaton says it's a great answer.
    • 90-139 earns 150. Mettaton is impressed with how passionate the protagonist is about them, even though he doesn't understand what they said.
    • 140 and longer earns 180. Mettaton suggests the protagonist write a book.

Creation and development

Mettaton EX slightly resembles Bob Sparker from Tales from Electricopolis by Pauli Kohberger and was inspired by the character.

According to Toby Fox, the fight against Mettaton EX was the hardest one for him to design.[10] There were many attack ideas that were never used, such as more tiny Mettaton robots, and disco dancing robots that threw stars.[11][12][13] Mettaton EX originally saved images of all the essays to the computer's hard drive, but the feature was removed for being too buggy.[14] Several unused sprites for Mettaton EX's head show his right eye, and what appears to be the machinery on his face.[15]

In the 10th Anniversary Stream, Toby mentions that Clairvoire drew the "Happy Breaktime" graphic.[16]

Trivia

  • Mettaton's bombs behave virtually identically to the bombs in Hudson's 2D Bomberman games.
  • Mettaton EX recognizes answers for "sexy", "foxy", and "tantalizing" in his essay question, but since the X and Z keys cannot be inputted without holding CTRL, they are only possible inputs in the console versions.[17][18]
  • With 3-7 DF (such as from using the Faded Ribbon) it is possible to survive a standard attack while at 4 HP, but not when at 5 HP due to it dealing 2 more damage.

  10. I think the Mettaton battle was actually the hardest one for me to design. I made a lot of bullet objects/attack ideas I didn't use since the action is "shooting," the action of "aiming&shooting" had to be important. But shooting&aiming in shmups (like Touhou) is often not actually about "aim&fire!" but "hold down the shoot button and position yourself under the enemy" for the most part. June 13, 2016.

Notes

  1. Essay terminates the boast affect almost immediately.
  2. 1 2 3 4 5 Hitting the heart enough times will cause the turn to end early. (40 frames after the burst gets triggered, or instantly for the heart laser variant.) This will only occur if the heart's HP is below 1 after getting hit. If the heart's HP drops below 1 through passive drain, it will end the next time the heart gets hit. Mettaton's Hearts have varied HP (800 for first one and arms variant, 700 for legs variant, 1000 for the laser variant) which drains at a rate of 30 HP/Sec (37.5 HP/Sec for the legs variant) and take 40 damage when shot.
  3. 1 2 Breaking the last bot will cause the turn to end early, at a maximum of 9 frames later
  4. 1 2 3 Round this value up or down depending on what the first/last frame's boost was due to the turn taking an odd number of frames.
  5. 1 2 3 4 Breaking the last bomb will cause the turn to end early, at a maximum of 9 frames later
  6. This takes place after Mettaton's 20th turn (the turn after the legs fall off) starts, so things that grant ratings during the turn like Boast are boosted, but things that grant ratings before the turn like Action are not boosted until the next turn.
  7. -1 rating every 4 frames
  8. First 4000 frames not including the 4000th
  9. +1 or +2 alternating every frame
  10. +3 or +4 alternating every frame, +2/frame or +60/sec on top of the normal boast gains
  11. Does not display the word as the game tries to access the string with the key "mett_ratings_beauty" which does not exist, rather than the one with the key "mett_ratings_fashion" which does exist.
  12. Does not occur in game due to the only essay attack happening before the boost is activated.
  13. In the essay, hotfinenticute gets interpreted as hot + fine + entic(e/ing) + cute
