From Undertale Wiki

Huh? You don't recognize me...?
Ohhh ho ho...
That's all for the better~!
Once I fuse with this PERFECT new body, mew~
A brand new, WONDERFUL life is going to begin!

Mad Mew Mew before her battle

Mad Mew Mew (JP: ぷんすかみゅうみゅう) is a console-exclusive character in Undertale. In the Nintendo Switch version, she appears as a secret miniboss in Papyrus and Sans's house. In the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S versions, she appears behind the poker table. The protagonist can only interact with Mad Mew Mew after defeating Mettaton.

Profile

Appearance

Mad Mew Mew appears in one of three dresses when first encountered. In battle, Mad Mew Mew has a human-like body with a cat tail. She wears a frilly tutu, a t-shirt, a pair of stockings and a pair of ballet shoes. In the True Pacifist Route's epilogue, she appears in the same dress she wore during the fight.

Although she is described as a life-sized doll for most of the fight, she is revealed to be an animatronic character once she is defeated violently, with the doll perhaps having been upgraded by Alphys.

As with Temmie, the sprite of Mad Mew Mew's face is separate from the sprite of her head.

Personality

Just like when she was Mad Dummy, Mad Mew Mew is always angry and a bit rambunctious. She has a tendency to make violent threats and repeat herself three times in a row. She also has a new habit of adding "mew~" to the end of certain sentences; it is unclear if this is a conscious decision made to better coincide with her new body or if it is an innocuous side-effect of the possession.

Main story

History

Following the fight against Mad Dummy, its ghost possesses a Mew Mew doll and unsuccessfully attempts to fuse with it. According to them, the doll was found in a "sciencey place", which heavily implies that the doll belonged to Alphys, a fan of Mew Mew Kissy Cutie. The ghost, now Mad Mew Mew, hides in the Dog Shrine underneath Papyrus's sink to be alone.

Nintendo Switch version

When the protagonist accesses the Dog Shrine by entering through Papyrus's sink, they find it abandoned and destroyed with the Annoying Dog in the middle of the wall replaced by a door. The door has a mysterious seal on it and colors corresponding with the Nintendo Switch's Joy-Con. This seal falls off after defeating Mettaton EX[2] and can be opened by moving both analog sticks apart from each other. Inside is a small room with a Mew Mew doll in the center. Interacting with it and then either attacking or touching the doll multiple times initiates an encounter.

During the battle, she gets increasingly frustrated at her struggles to fuse with her new body. The protagonist suggests other ways that she can fuse, after which they can choose to spare or attack her. Attacking her at this point destroys her body. If Mad Mew Mew was spared, she thanks the protagonist for showing her kindness, but if her body was destroyed, she swears revenge against the protagonist. She leaves the room soon afterward.

Defeating Mad Mew Mew unlocks a special border. The border is titled "Real" or "Not Real", depending on the protagonist's response to Undyne's inquiry during the date with Alphys. If the protagonist had not yet reached that point, the title will be left blank until they do.

Xbox version

On the Xbox version, the Dog Shrine has been overhauled again, meaning that Mad Mew Mew can no longer be fought. Instead, she appears behind the poker table after defeating Mettaton EX and sparing Undyne, replacing Sans. She gives her own commentary based on whatever the protagonist last interacted with.

True Pacifist Route

On the Nintendo Switch version, after the fight with Mad Mew Mew, the training dummy in front of Undyne's house disappears (regardless of whether the protagonist chose to fight or spare Mad Mew Mew) until the True Pacifist Route's epilogue, where Mad Mew Mew appears in front of Undyne's house. If spared, she says that she wishes to be a TV star, even rivaling Mettaton. However, if her body was destroyed, she continues to swear revenge against the protagonist. During the True Pacifist ending credits, Mad Dummy's character credits have been replaced with Mad Mew Mew's.

Outside of Undertale

UNDERTALE Alarm Clock

Mad Mew Mew is mentioned in Undyne's excerpt, where it is revealed that she took up virtual streaming after the events of Undertale.[3] In Mettaton's excerpt, Mettaton becomes jealous of Mad Mew Mew hanging out with Napstablook, and the two former ghost monsters engage in a battle. The two later hang out in the kitchen drinking ghost juice, where Mad Mew Mew pines for Undyne.

Papyrus Q&A

In Papyrus's 2nd Q&A, Mad Mew Mew makes a brief appearance during Papyrus's answer to the question "What should I name my new cat?" After Papyrus advises naming the cat after himself, she suggests the questioner name the cat "Mew Mew". Papyrus responds by addressing her by his name, which implies that he adopted Mad Mew Mew following the events of Undertale.

Despite lacking a proper dialogue portrait in-game, Mad Mew Mew's head is used as her dialogue portrait in the Q&A.

Nintendo Switch trailer

Mad Mew Mew makes an appearance in the UNDERTALE Nintendo Switch Release Trailer, animated by Temmie Chang.[4] She appears in the animated intro and in scene near the end in which 3D Toriel shoots her with her lasers. She also appears in the outro playing Undertale on her Nintendo Switch.

Trivia

  • Mad Mew Mew's design appears to take heavy influence from and likely is a reference to Mew Ichigo, the protagonist of the magical girl anime and manga series Tokyo Mew Mew (also known as Mew Mew Power in North America).
    • The Mew Mew doll is based on the in-universe Mew Mew Kissy Cutie anime series, the posters of which in Alphys's Lab also reference Tokyo Mew Mew.
    • The Mew Mew doll is described as limited-edition, implying that it was manufactured on the surface like other Mew Mew Kissy Cutie paraphernalia Alphys collects.
  • Mad Mew Mew is likely a transgender allegory, similarly to Mettaton.
    • One of her quotes in battle, "As soon as I saw this body, I just knew -- IT WAS ME!!! ME!!! ME!!!!", describes an immediate identification with the Mew Mew doll. This is also reminiscent of Mettaton's reaction when presented with Alphys's sketches of his humanoid EX body.
    • Another quote, "And now, with this new body, I've got a BRAND NEW life ahead of me!! NEW LIFE!!! COOL LIFE!!! NEW LIFE!!! COOL LIFE!!! NEW LIFE!!!" voices a sentiment akin to that of many transgender people after transitioning.
    • Mad Mew Mew's pronouns change from "they" to "she" once she discovers her new body.
