So Sorry, before his battle

So Sorry (JP: ゴッゴメン) is an optional miniboss that can be encountered in the Art Club room on the second floor of Hotland.

Profile

Appearance

So Sorry resembles a dragon, and his appearance is based on his original backer's design.[5] His body is primarily orange, with brown accents and light brown hair. In battle, So Sorry can wear one of five different hats: a party hat, a tiny cowboy hat, a beret, a jester hat, and a fedora. The shape of his muzzle also changes with each of his expressions.

Personality

So Sorry is an apprehensive and apologetic but otherwise friendly artist. His attacks are not deliberate attempts to hurt the protagonist, but rather clumsy attempts to show his art and creativity. He presents as very awkward, insecure, and quick to blame himself, going so far as to apologize for being attacked, assuming he got "in the way".

Like some other characters in the game, So Sorry's flavor text shows that they have multiple pronouns. In said text, they are referred to with the pronouns "it", "they", and "his".

Etymology

So Sorry's name most likely derives from the fact that he never mentions his name. One of his first lines spoken to the player is "I'm so sorry!". The "I'm" could be interpreted as "My name is".

Main story

Neutral Route

To encounter So Sorry, the protagonist must read the sign in the Art Club room when the player's computer/console clock is set for October 10th at 8 AM or 8 PM (i.e. between 8:00 and 8:59) to encounter him, or all day on the Nintendo Switch or Xbox versions.[6] The Muffet encounter must also be finished before the encounter in versions 1.00 and 1.001.

If So Sorry's HP has been depleted, he attempts to limp off-screen but dies before doing so. Afterwards, the sign in the Art Club room reads "(Art is dead.)".

True Pacifist Route

Once the player receives Undyne's phone call asking to deliver her letter, So Sorry can no longer be encountered, as the sign in the Art Club room changes to read "Who knows what lies in the future for Art Club!?". This remains the case during the Epilogue.

In the console ports beginning with the Nintendo Switch version, So Sorry can be seen standing outside the Art Club room opposite from Tsunderplane.[7] He only appears if he was encountered and spared during a run of the game.

Genocide Route

So Sorry cannot be encountered in the Genocide Route as Hotland's second floor is blocked off. If the Art Club room is entered on the Genocide Route, So Sorry still cannot be encountered as the sign in the Art Club room reads "(Art club is cancelled!)".

In battle

Attacks

  • He swings his tail at the protagonist while he turns around to search for things in his vest. This tail uses blue and orange attacks.
  • Crumpled paper is thrown at the protagonist in mass amounts.
  • He mistakenly draws Doodlebogs, which throw doodles in circular formations at the protagonist. The Doodlebogs are disposed of with the "Draw" ACT option.
  • When the battle is about to end, So Sorry does both of his first aforementioned attacks at the same time.

Strategy

So Sorry cannot be spared. The battle can be ended in two ways.

  • Progressing the battle without attacking for at least ten turns. The battle does not progress while Doodlebogs are present.
  • Attacking 11 times. So Sorry always takes 100 damage when attacked, regardless of attack strength or accuracy.[8]

Creation and development

So Sorry was a $1,000 tier bought-in character during the Undertale Kickstarter, where a backer's fantroll would become canon in Undertale. His appearance is partly based on the backer's own pre-existing avatar. The backer, Samael, agreed to let Toby Fox alter the character for the in-game representation to give Toby more room to design the character to his liking and to disconnect it from Samael's online presence. Samael was the subject of harassment after the inspiration for So Sorry was discovered, due to the fat fetishism themes in their artwork.[9]

Temmie Chang made a front overworld sprite for So Sorry, but it was initially not used and So Sorry is only seen from the back outside of battle.[10] The front overworld sprite was later added beginning with the Nintendo Switch version of Undertale.[7] The sprite, however, slightly differs from the original unused sprite since So Sorry's head is redrawn to resemble his in-game appearance rather than the backer's avatar and wears a beret instead of a green fedora with a small red accessory on it.

There was originally a unique sequence ending in a boss fight planned for So Sorry, where he would attempt to paint a butterfly in his studio. This was replaced by the sequence and boss fight with Muffet in the final game.[11] The ideas for this sequence were scrapped, and So Sorry's role in the game was greatly reduced. Samael was also offered a refund and removal of their character. This was done by Toby as a way to prevent harassment towards Samael.[12]

Outside of Undertale

Deltarune

In Chapter 4 of Deltarune, in the Egg room in the Second Sanctuary, there is an unseen character who can be spoken to, internally referred to as artclubperson. This character has similarities to So Sorry, being a bumbling person participating in an art club who apologizes to the protagonist upon meeting them. Furthermore, the Egg room is an area that is seemingly "in the wrong time and space", which is how So Sorry is described in his boss fight. The backer who created So Sorry, Samael, made comments on social media about this character's inclusion in Deltarune.[13]

Trivia

  • So Sorry and Asgore are the only characters to use both blue and orange attacks.
  • If So Sorry is repeatedly attacked, he will offer increasing amounts of GOLD for sparing him. However, the amount of GOLD received is based on the standard formula for determining GOLD based on how much damage was inflicted. The amounts of GOLD offered by So Sorry are unused.
  • Doodlebog may be a reference to the character DoodleBob from SpongeBob SquarePants, another drawing that comes to life whose name is only 1 letter off from Doodlebog's.
