Reaper Bird

From Undertale Wiki
(Redirected from Everyman)

Reaper Bird (JP: しにがみちょう), known in battle as "," (a single comma symbol) before its spare conditions are met, is an Amalgamate found in the True Lab. It is composed of parts from Astigmatism, Final Froggit, and Whimsalot. Its body is so long that about a third of it covers the dialogue box, which it retracts when attacking.

Profile

Appearance

Reaper Bird's head is composed of the body of Astigmatism, with Astigmatism's legs serving as Reaper Bird's "beak". The small white areas at the top and bottom of its eye (which would typically be the sclera of a real eye) are repurposed as gnashing teeth which occasionally close over the pupil.

Reaper Bird's wings are each made from half of Final Froggit's body while its legs are unnaturally-extended versions of Whimsalot's legs.

In the overworld, Reaper Bird takes the form of a horned creature with hollow eyes and a vertical mouth. Its form tapers to a point at the bottom.

Everyman, Reaper Bird's main attack, appears to have the body of a cartoonish depiction of an anthropomorphic bird embryo. His head has a short appendage resembling a half-formed embryonic beak, and small black circles for eyes. His body is chubby, with a wide neck, short legs and long, wide arms.

Personality

Reaper Bird's mannerisms appear to be a mix of Final Froggit's, Whimsalot's, and Astigmatism's. Its Check description is composed of parts of the descriptions of each of its components, and whenever it speaks, dialogue associated with each component appears layered over each other.

Etymology

Everyman's name was confirmed in a deleted tweet by Toby Fox[3] and the UNDERTALE Art Book.[4] In fiction, an everyman is a character archetype describing an ordinary and benign character, often a protagonist, which contrasts with the rapidity and vigor of traditional archetypal hero protagonists. In the game files, Everyman's sprites are referred to as "strangeman".

Main story

True Pacifist Route

Reaper Bird is encountered in the True Lab in the horizontal hallway before the room that houses the blue key slot. Just before entering the room, the protagonist is stopped by a random encounter indicator, which reveals itself as Reaper Bird and attacks.

Reaper Bird, along with the Memoryheads and Everyman, does not show up in the epilogue with the other Amalgamates.

In battle

Attacks

  • Everyman appears to the right of the screen and has his head attacked by a swarm of butterflies, causing him to writhe in pain. The only way to be harmed by this attack is to run intentionally into the butterflies. This is the first attack Reaper Bird uses and is only used once.
  • The Everyman, now headless, shakily walks to the left of the screen as the butterflies fly off. This is the only attack where the Everyman can damage the SOUL.
  • The Everyman regenerates heads and tosses them, which home in towards the protagonist's SOUL. The far right of the bullet board is safe, and the SOUL can move through the Everyman without taking damage.

Strategy

The Reaper Bird can be spared by picking on it, praying, and mystifying it in any order.

Quotes

  • Its quotes, including its Check description, all appear to be garbled, meaningless mashed-up text at the beginning of the battle but are soon revealed to be quotes from Astigmatism, Final Froggit, and Whimsalot written over the top of each other.

Outside of Undertale

Everyman is a recurring character in Deltarune, where he sometimes appears in Jevil's, Poppup's, and Queen's attack animations.

Trivia

  • Reaper Bird has two ACTs that come from Woshua and Shyren (Clean and Hum, respectively) although Reaper Bird does not contain parts from these monsters. Since these two ACTs have no effect on Reaper Bird, they are likely meant as red herrings.
  • Prior to spare conditions being met, Reaper Bird's check descriptions displays its stats in the code, as all enemies did prior to v1.001, making it the only enemy to still have this feature. The overlapping text obscures this, however.
