Muffet, when changing the color of the protagonist's SOUL to purple

Muffet is a miniboss that the protagonist encounters in Hotland. She runs a bake sale, being very angry at passers-by who do not purchase anything from it despite selling overpriced items for 9999 gold.

Profile

Appearance

Muffet is an anthropomorphic spider monster with periwinkle or lavender skin, five eyes, six arms, and two legs. She wears red rompers with buttons in the front, a red ribbon across her chest, as well as twin pigtails in her hair. She is also shown holding two teacups with her top pair of hands and two teapots with her middle pair.

Her pet accomplice appears to be a giant muffin with a face on the frosting part as well as spider legs sticking out of the sides.

Personality

Muffet is often portrayed as a greedy, stingy, intimidating and somehow hypocritical monster, although having a courteous and sweet way of speaking. Even so, she seems to have a quite malicious aspect on her personality whenever she is crossed, something that occasionally triggers her fight. During her battle, she also has a tendency to cite morbid or inappropriate things, such as commenting on the protagonist's possible fate in being used to make food.

Etymology

Muffet's name appears to be a reference to the children's nursery rhyme "Little Miss Muffet," in which a young girl eating cottage cheese is scared away by a spider.

Main Story

Neutral Route

Muffet appears to be the leader of the spiders in the Underground. She also runs her own bake sale in Hotland, with the purpose of raising funds to rescue the spiders trapped in the Ruins, as they cannot make it past Snowdin's cold weather.

Attempting to call Papyrus/Papyrus and Undyne before fighting Muffet in the Spider Entrance room triggers the message "(The signal is clogged with cobwebs...)." Upon entering her lair, Muffet attacks the protagonist.

After 17 turns of battle, Muffet receives a telegram from the spiders in the Ruins. The contents of the telegram vary depending on the protagonist's actions. After receiving the telegram, Muffet concludes that the protagonist does not hate spiders and decides to let them go, apologizing and jokingly offering to wrap them up in her web and play with her pet again for free next time they come around. If the protagonist had bought an item from the bake sale in the Ruins and then used it right in front of Muffet, she accuses the protagonist of stealing before receiving the telegram immediately afterward. If the protagonist has purchased at least one of the items from her bake sale in Hotland, she thanks the protagonist instead of fighting them.

If the protagonist decides to kill Muffet, a spider crawls and places a flower in the place where she died.

During the battle, Muffet speaks about how she was warned by someone about the protagonist's arrival, and she was offered much money for the protagonist's SOUL. She also explains that the money would help to finally reunite the spider clans.

True Pacifist Route

In the epilogue, the protagonist can return to her lair to speak with her, where she informs the protagonist that the bake sale was a success and that she raised enough money to have a heated limo transport all the spiders from the Ruins. Depending on how much money the protagonist has spent at the bake sales, Muffet can afford various other things for the spiders with the remaining money.

Genocide Route

Muffet does not appear in her bake sale. When the protagonist encounters her, she laments that she cannot use them in her recipes because she considers them rotten, but states that spoiled ingredients can always be discarded. During the battle, if she is not killed right away, Muffet first says that the protagonist is scaring away all her customers, thus not letting them leave. She goes on to talk about how Alphys tried to get her to evacuate Hotland because of the danger posed by the protagonist, but she refused. She regrets that she did not capture Alphys, for she says she would have made "a juicy donut."

She eventually lets the protagonist go after receiving a telegram from the spiders in the Ruins. She concludes that they have not hurt any spiders even if they are a "hyper-violent murderer" (Muffet is the only spider enemy the protagonist encounters). However, she may crash the game after the "dinner" attack as the game tries to load an attack that does not exist. (This may be related to the use of Debug Mode, and the "skip attack" shortcut within.) Purchasing an item from the Hotland bake sale does not abort the Genocide Route. Muffet will mention that the protagonist donated, but she will still be suspicious of them and attacks. If she is spared, the Genocide Route will be aborted. Once she is spared, Muffet does not appear again as an NPC.

In Battle

Attacks

A spider appears to the right between each turn, holding a sign that presents the density and type of attack that will come after the protagonist's turn.

SOUL Modes

Muffet activates Purple Mode on her first turn, which persists for the entire battle. This restricts the protagonist's SOUL to a few horizontal lines, or "strings," that one can move along or switch between to avoid attacks.

Patterns

Note: All damages assume no armor and LV 1.

• Her most frequent attack is sending spiders along single strings. This does 6 damage per hit.
• She throws croissants along the lines that resemble boomerangs, returning the way they came after being thrown. This does 6 damage per hit.
• She throws donuts diagonally that bounce off the edge of the screen. This does 6 damage per hit.

After turning the protagonist's SOUL purple.

• She begins with one of her other attacks, then let her "pet" muffin-spider pull the strings down toward it while using a slower version of the spider attack at the same time. This attack happens three times in the battle as "breakfast," "lunch," and "dinner" special attacks. The spiders do 6 damage per hit, and the pet does 4 damage per hit.

Strategy

• Muffet offers to spare the protagonist after 17 turns.
  • Using a Spider Donut or Spider Cider from the Ruins during her battle brings up the spare option after a short monologue. This can be done on any route.
• If the protagonist spends at least 9000G on the Spider Bake Sales in either the Ruins or Hotland, Muffet refuses to fight and lets the protagonist pass (buying an item from Hotland's Spider Bake Sale requires the protagonist to spend 9999G up front). If the protagonist is on the Genocide Route, Muffet fights the protagonist regardless if this is done or not.
• Muffet can be killed with a single hit by attacking when she offers to spare the protagonist. This action is similar to how Toriel dies after being attacked when she stops attacking and is called a "betrayal kill."

Mechanics

• Bribing Muffet decreases the damage dealt by each hit by one. The amount paid increases every time used, however.
  • Using Struggle 3 times permanently cuts the current cost to bribe her in half. This works only once, and the discount does not increase in proportion after a bribe.
  • After bribing her without enough money, she lowers the price.

Creation and Development

Muffet was a bought-in character during the Undertale Kickstarter designed by Michelle Czajkowski, the creator of the webcomic Ava's Demon. Muffet's specific age is unknown, according to her creator.

According to Toby, he thought he made Muffet too difficult, even though she was already changed a few times during development.

Animation glitch

• When interacting with Muffet after battling her, her laughing animation stops and resets to her initial sprite image.
• There is a glitch in the credits where Muffet's pigtails appear below the ribbon on her hair instead of being placed on the ribbons.
• Muffet's laugh is used for W.D. Gaster's Entry 17 (it is reversed and then looped over).
• Muffet has an unused white description intended for the True Pacifist Ending Credits.
• Muffet's donation flag increases after her battle based on the final bribe cost, rather than the total bribe amount given. As a result, her dialogue in the True Pacifist epilogue can only say that the spiders sold nothing if the protagonist struggles with 1G or less to lower the bribe price to 1G or less.
