Undyne/In battle

From Undertale Wiki

Now, human! Let's end this, right here, right now.
I'll show you how determined monsters can be!
Step forward when you're ready! Fuhuhuhu!

Undyne

Undyne is the third boss of the Neutral and True Pacifist route. Atop Waterfall's crag, she gives a speech to the protagonist near the "Undyne Arena" SAVE Point.

Attacks

Undyne attacks with varying spear patterns from different sides of the bullet board. With a swipe from her spear, Undyne can change the protagonist's SOUL mode to red or green. Persistent in her goal, Undyne attacks when her HP is 0, and continues encounters if the protagonist flees.

SOUL modes

Green mode is used initially, with the red mode being used twice briefly, and then exclusively following the last set of attacks in green mode.

Patterns

Note: All damages assume no armor, Neutral or True Pacifist Route, and LV 1.
Green SOUL
  • She throws arrows from all sides at the protagonist in green mode, including specifically slow and fast moving arrows, as well as arrows that flip the orientation that they are approaching from. These attacks do 5 damage per hit.
Red SOUL
  • Undyne restricts the bullet board to a minuscule box, which launches spears upwards toward the protagonist in three columns. This attack has a pixel-perfect safe spot between the left and center spears. This attack does 5 damage per hit.
  • Undyne throws a volley of continuous spears at the protagonist on a larger Board. This attack does 5 damage per hit.
  • After changing the SOUL mode to red at the end of an attack in green mode, Undyne throws a single spear at the protagonist. This attack is exclusive to regular Undyne.

Strategy

Undyne cannot be spared in battle. To spare Undyne, the protagonist instead must deflect her spear projectiles while in green mode and repeatedly flee from her while in red mode, as they cannot flee while in green mode.

In battle, Undyne swiping with her spear indicates when she changes the SOUL mode from green to red and vice versa. The number of green phrases is 6, 4, and 8.

The protagonist's ACTs can also change Undyne's attack speed:

  • Challenge: immediately increases her projectile speed.
  • Plead: reduces it (each within certain thresholds)

When Undyne pursues the protagonist in the overworld, she is faster than them, thus she can begin another battle. In each encounter, she switches the protagonist back to green mode until they have endured at least three rounds, with each one being harder than the last.

Once the protagonist reaches Hotland and pours water over Undyne's head, she stops her pursuit and returns to her home. Afterwards, she can be befriended if Papyrus was spared and if the protagonist did not gain EXP. If the protagonist leaves the watercooler room without giving water to Undyne, this aborts True Pacifist Route progress, as someone rescues Undyne from her heat-stroke.[1]

Otherwise, not fleeing while in red mode causes Undyne to throw more spears and then swap them back to green mode for the next round. She progressively increases her projectile speed over the course of the fight while fleeing resets the speed.

If Undyne's HP reaches certain values while in green mode, she shortens the current green mode cycle and turns the SOUL red sooner. This is most likely to ensure that she always turns the SOUL red three times in the Neutral Route.

After a certain point in the fight, while the SOUL is in red mode, Undyne's DF drops based on how high her HP is.[2]

Additionally, if the protagonist deliberately gets hit by Undyne's first attack four times in a row, her projectiles become very fast and she uses one of her hardest attacks before switching to red mode, skipping her first two green mode phases.

Mechanics

If the protagonist does not rescue Monster Kid before Undyne's introduction, she jumps off the cliff to save Monster Kid, causing her to take 100 damage and have 1400 HP at the start of the battle instead of 1500 HP.[3]

If Undyne's health reaches 0, she manages to cling on to life with determination, letting her survive further attacks. This causes her melt similarly to the Amalgamates, and FIGHTing does not end the battle sooner. The protagonist's SOUL also gets set to green mode, which prevents them from fleeing or sparing her.

As Undyne persists, her projectiles move slower each turn, with each of her attacks causing her body to ripple and split apart. Eventually, she reforms due to her determination, though it is more than her monster body can handle.

Trivia

  • Undyne and Toriel are the only bosses that the protagonist can flee from during a battle.
    • However, Undyne's battle can only be fled from if the protagonist's SOUL is red, and cannot be fled from on the Genocide Route.
  • When Undyne says "En Guarde!" before her fight with the protagonist begins, the sentence is misspelled. The right spelling is "en garde", as the sentence is in French. This could also be a combination of the French and English spelling, Garde, and Guard, giving Guarde.
  • If Papyrus is killed, Undyne's face appears in the dialogue box before her battle despite never taking off her helmet. If the protagonist approaches to fight Undyne, she appears without her helmet.
  • Undyne's dialogue ("You're going to have to try harder than that!") in the Neutral Route after draining all her HP is similar to her final sentence when transforming into Undyne the Undying, just before she fights the protagonist ("You're gonna have to try a little harder than THAT.").
  • Undyne and Mettaton are the only characters to use attacks whose colors correspond to how they move instead of how they do damage. (They all do damage as if they were white.) All of her green mode spears are either white and blue or yellow. Also, her spear she throws when doing a green to red switch is white and blue and has a shadow.
  • When her health drops to 0, Undyne's eye color inverts. Since this also occurs when she transforms into Undyne the Undying, it is implied that this is caused by her determination.
  • The Green SOUL Mode from this battle makes a reappearance in the Shadow Crystal Boss and one of the main bosses in Deltarune Chapter 4
