Flowey

Omega Flowey[3] (JP: オメガフラウィ)[4] is the powered-up transformation of Flowey, achieved by absorbing the six human SOULs. If the protagonist has not defeated him before since the last True Reset or Genocide Route, he serves as the final boss of the Neutral Route.

Profile

Appearance

Omega Flowey is a hybrid of machinery, human parts, and plant tissue. He consists entirely of rendered images, making him stylistically different from anything else in Undertale.

Omega Flowey hangs by multiple tubes from the ceiling. His face appears on the screen of a television, which resembles the one found in the True Lab. The monitor can display either Flowey's face and petals, a black and white screen of a yelling human, or a white face with green pupils, red sclera, and a wide mouth with large, blocky teeth. The latter face can also escape the screen when it laughs, as the mouth seems to pop out of the bottom.

DT Extraction Machine overworld.png
Omega Flowey's base is similar to the DT Extraction Machine.

Curved around the monitor are six tubes, one for each SOUL, which resembles the petals of Flowey's normal form. One tube flashes the color of the SOUL the protagonist is about to confront. The second row has a floating pair of human-like eyeballs inside of them, totaling six eyes.

The middle of his body features a fleshy and distorted human-like face with nostrils. On each side is a sideways eye near the third row of tubes, with mandibles and human teeth connected to the end of the tubes. Its general shape is reminiscent of the DT Extraction Machine from the True Lab, which has six tubes and its base resembling a face. Alphys used this machine to extract determination from six previously captured human SOULs — the same SOULs that Omega Flowey uses to power himself.

Connected to the sides of the base are two large green vines with red thorns that continues to sprout from his body. Underneath it is multiple small green-leaved vines, and a set of large green cacti arms with red spikes, which has three claw-like thorns on each hand.

Etymology

Undertale never directly names this form of Flowey. In the UNDERTALE Art Book, an image of this form of Flowey is captioned simply "Flowey (Boss)".

Internally, the names of several game objects in the battle with this form of Flowey are prefixed with obj_floweyx. This naming scheme is common for alternate versions of characters in battle, also being used for Undyne the Undying (undynex) and Moldsmal's second form, Moldbygg (moldsmalx).

In the Neutral Route end credits, Everdraed is credited for "Photoshop Flowey Battle Co-design", but with a line break after "Photoshop". One common interpretation of this credit is that Everdraed co-designed the battle as Photoshop Flowey. However, it can also be interpreted as separate credits for "Photoshop" (i.e. work done using the image-editing software Photoshop) and "Flowey Battle Co-design" (not using any special name for this specific form of Flowey).

On Fangamer's UNDERTALE Tarot Prints, the card for this form of Flowey refers to it as Omega Flowey. Omega Flowey was commonly used as a fan name for this form of Flowey prior to the release of these cards. However, Toby Fox has stated that merchandise is not canon.[5] Nonetheless, Everdraed, who co-designed the battle with Flowey, has used the name "Omega Flowey" several times on Twitter.[6][7] Additionally, in the 10th Anniversary Stream, both Everdraed and Toby consistently refer to this form of Flowey as "Omega Flowey".[3]

The "Omega Flowery!" voice clip used in Deltarune Chapter 5.

In Chapter 5 of Deltarune, after combining the power of the six flowers, Flowery (originally based on Flowey) shouts the line “Omega Flowery!” with a human voice, implying that Toby has officially canonized the term “Omega Flowey”. Additionally, each flower boss besides Flowery has an attack resembling that of their soul counterparts', which are sometimes called "Omega Attacks".

Main story

At the end of the battle against Asgore and his monologue to the protagonist, Flowey ambushes him or destroys his SOUL depending on the battle's outcome. With the human SOULs freed, Flowey repeats his philosophy: "In this world... it's KILL or BE killed." He then absorbs the SOULs, with his face contorting into a skeletal appearance as he laughs. The game immediately closes[note 1] or returns to the introductory cinematic automatically.[note 2]

The introduction of Floweytale.

Upon starting the game, the introductory cinematic for Undertale is altered: the Boss Monster is replaced with a Loox, similarly to the Undertale Demo, and the text sound bite is absent. The text pauses on "One day, the" and is abruptly completed with "they all disappeared without a trace." As this occurs, the image glitches and the faces are obscured. On the PC version, the title displayed on the game's window changes rapidly to lines of random letters and numbers during this sequence. A stuttering noise plays until the player presses [CONFIRM].

The game presents a faux Main Menu with the option to load a SAVE file of Flowey's creation, the location being "My World". On the PC version, the window's title changes to "Floweytale". The SAVE file is under Flowey's name, has LV 9999, and the play time is 9999:99. The player can only choose the "Continue" option, as any attempts to choose "Restart" are ineffective. After loading the SAVE, the window title becomes blank.

Omega Flowey screenshot Flowey's world.png
Flowey's SAVE file.

After selecting "Continue", the protagonist appears in a black void, with a SAVE Point at the northern end. When the protagonist inspects it, the interface of their SAVE file cracks and is destroyed as it is rammed from the back. Flowey's enlarged and screened face bursts through it, mockingly thanking the protagonist for unwittingly helping him claim the human SOULs. He states that he wants the protagonist's SOUL as well in order to "become GOD", ridicules the protagonist depending if they have or have not SAVEd, and gloats that he will SAVE over their death each time.

At the start of the battle against Omega Flowey, the six human SOULs briefly appear before fading out. The screen flickers red and black, with Omega Flowey descending as a silhouette. When his monitor appears, his eyes change as he laughs and his full form becomes visible. During the battle, Omega Flowey attacks in conjunction with the six human SOULs; each of the SOULs attack individually.

During the battle, Omega Flowey's reloads his SAVEs, akin to "save scumming". He always uses SAVE files 2, 3, and 6, though he does not use the protagonist's files (file 0), or files 1, 4, and 5.

If the protagonist dies during this battle, the player receives a special Game Over screen: the text "This is all just a bad dream..." is narrated with Asgore's sound bite, followed by "And you're NEVER waking up!" narrated with Flowey's. The screen is subsequently filled with a scrolling wall of "HAHAHA" as Flowey laughs. In the PC version, the game cannot be closed during this Game Over screen via the Esc or F4 buttons. After the wall of laughter, the game immediately closes[note 1] or returns to the introductory cinematic.[note 2]

After requesting assistance from each of the six SOULs, Your Best Nightmare transitions into Finale, and the SOULs support the protagonist by offering HP healing attacks and by lowering Omega Flowey's defense to 0. The fight continues until they reduce Omega Flowey's HP to 0.

Omega Flowey screenshot trollface.png
Flowey upon reloading FILE 3.

When the protagonist defeats Omega Flowey, he initially feigns panic before making a troll face and reloading FILE 3, a SAVE file he created at the beginning of the fight. This results in both Flowey and the protagonist reverting to full HP. Flowey taunts the protagonist by killing them and then reloading the SAVE file 32 times in rapid succession. He encircles the protagonist's SOUL with bullets, much like he did at the beginning of the game, and uses SAVE FILE 6.

If the protagonist runs into Flowey's pellets when encircled, he immediately reloads FILE 6. Continuously doing this irritates Flowey, causing him to stop his monologue to demand that the protagonist "stop that". Whether the protagonist stops or continues, he then resumes his speech.[8]

After jeering about how helpless the protagonist is, he dares them to call for help. An ACT button appears for the protagonist, and pressing it results in a call for help. Nothing happens; Flowey proceeds to close the ring of bullets to kill the protagonist. However, when any of the bullets hits the protagonist's SOUL, it fully heals the protagonist's HP and any remaining bullets instantly vanish, similarly to the encounter with Flowey in the Ruins. Confused, Flowey attempts to load an alternate SAVE file, but is in disbelief that he is suddenly unable to do so.

The human SOULs exit Omega Flowey and fight back, draining Flowey of his power and forcing him to revert into his regular form. The protagonist can choose to kill or spare the battered Flowey, with the latter causing Flowey to try to offer advice for a better ending after Sans's call.

On subsequent Neutral Routes, Flowey returns to kill Asgore, but he does not transform into Omega Flowey again, as he is certain the human SOULs would revolt anyways. After Flowey absorbs the SOULs, the screen shifts to the protagonist being at the sunlit patch of grass and the Delta Rune arch, where they can exit the underground.

In battle

Attacks

Phase 1, 4

  • Flowey's lower eyes shoot seven X-shaped bullets that cover a wide arc of the playable field. The bullets travel slowly for 60 seconds after Flowey's DF drops to 0.
  • Flowey's upper eyes shoot X-shaped bullets in triplets that surround the protagonist. The bullets travel slowly for 60 seconds after Flowey's DF drops to 0.
  • Flowey summons flamethrowers near his arms that throw three blasts of short-lasting fire.
  • A warning circle appears around the SOUL that rapidly flashes from red to yellow. Afterwards, "friendliness pellets" trace this circle, close in on the middle, and fly away in their traveling directions.
  • Flowey shoots many vines that are concentrated at the protagonist's SOUL, marked by lines that rapidly flash from red to yellow.
  • Flowey's second head shoots a large beam from its mouth across the center of the screen. When this attack is about to be used, a blue light emits from the slightly ajar mouth. This attack is only used after he finishes using his vines attack, which occurs about 20% of the time due to randomness in the attack's duration.[9][10] Omega Flowey never uses laser in his final phase, as all his attacks are cut earlier than usual.

Phase 2, 6

  • Flowey grows a Venus flytrap from one of his cactus hands. This Venus flytrap vacuums in flies that damage the protagonist when touched.
  • Flowey drops many bombs from the top of the screen that explode on contact with the bottom of the playable field. The actual bomb, when touched, deals damage along with the area of the explosions.
  • Flowey grows plant stems with finger guns at the end that shoot from the left and right of the screen. Flowey's face is seen on the ends of the fingers.
  • Flowey fires three dentata. The dentata are circular, cactus-like snakes with mouths, and they ricochet off the walls a few times until they fly off-screen.

Phase 3, 5

  • In this phase, Flowey uses his upper eye and vine attacks only. However, Flowey also SAVEs to "FILE 2?" between each pair of attacks (specifically, between two vine attacks or between an eye attack and a vine attack). If the protagonist dodges the attack, he loads the file to bait them into stopping in front of an unexpected incoming attack. If the protagonist dodges the attack a second time, Flowey does not load the file again.

SOUL attacks

At certain points, Omega Flowey's TV screen depicts a "WARNING" message accompanied by a siren. One of the gray tubes flashes the color of the human SOUL the protagonist is about to face before the game screen fades to black. The bullets in the SOUL segments can harm the protagonist, but cannot kill them. Not pressing the ACT button causes the same SOUL battle to repeat after Omega Flowey's attacks.

These attacks resemble objects and concepts associated with the respective human SOUL.

A gun at the center of the screen shoots bullets at the protagonist's SOUL, which is indicated by red crosshairs. One of the bullets gets replaced by the ACT button. The bullets are replaced with healing green 4-petal flowers,[note 3] which look similar to a four-leaf clover. The red crosshair also becomes an outline of a red heart. Resembles the Empty Gun that can be bought from Bratty and Catty, nearby MTT Resort.

Strategy

Unlike other encounters in Undertale, this battle is not turn-based, and is centered around dodging bullets, with only the FIGHT and ACT buttons available during certain segments. These both must be used to defeat Omega Flowey. Regardless of the protagonist's LV, they have 50 HP during this fight.

During the SOUL segments, the ACT button eventually appears. Using the option prompts the protagonist to call for help. After a few seconds, the SOUL in the TV screen displays the next SOUL, and all of the SOULs attacks are replaced by respective green items that heal the protagonist.

  • Dying and reloading after the protagonist completes the 6 SOUL minigames skips the cutscene of the 6 SOULs surrounding the protagonist and resets Flowey's HP to its maximum.
  • The game remembers which SOUL sections have been completed to prevent losing progress. This fail-safe is true even if the protagonist dies or when the game closes.

Once the protagonist has ACTed versus all six SOULs, Flowey's defense drops to 0, and his attacks are limited to eye-pellet attacks. Omega Flowey starts taking over 150 damage, with damage increasing every 30 seconds until it reaches a maximum of 1220.[2] The pellets are significantly weaker, shooting out slower than normal and in lower numbers. As this occurs, the SOULs supply the protagonist with the same green healing bullets from their segments. After 60 seconds, Flowey's attacks revert to the moveset of Phase 2/6 for the rest of the battle.

  • The protagonist can be hit 13 times (or 14 times when healed above their maximum, such as in the final phase) before dying. As a result, difficulty balancing is used in regards to damage; Flowey's attacks deal more damage at higher HP, while the healing items are more effective at lower HP.
  • As the final phase goes on, the protagonist's damage slowly increases, starting at around 185 damage and slowly going up from there. However, it caps at around 1,210 damage.
    • In debug mode, this can go as high as 6,000 damage, allowing the protagonist to defeat Flowey in only two hits.

Creation and development

Omega Flowey artwork concept.png
The earliest concept art of Omega Flowey.

Omega Flowey was designed by Everdraed with assistance from Toby Fox, with his design and boss fight being developed in tandem. The original concept art depicts him with six large canisters on his back, four of which contain the six human SOULs, including a pink one which was later replaced by orange. The large vines on the sides were covered in eyes instead of thorns, and appendages ending in human-like arms protruded from behind the canisters. Only two of his petals are present at this time.

The second iteration is cleaned up, now with more polished assets for the main head, all six petals, and an earlier design of the large TV, which at this point was blue with a white antenna on the top. The six containers were moved behind the petals, and early sketches of the blue and cyan SOULs are shown, instead of the green and yellow ones from the first, which have their corresponding containers empty. The appendages with human-like arms appear to have been replaced by pipes spewing flames, although aside from the main body, this concept art is far less finished than the first.

The third iteration is when Toby finally realized the SOULs could fit inside the petals, removing the containers and showing five out of six petals filled. At this point, the pink SOUL had been replaced by the orange SOUL, which is shown with orange electricity connecting it to the petals, presumably as an early phase warning. The cyan SOUL is entirely absent, its petal empty, presumably an early indicator for which SOUL phases have been completed. This design also moved the petal eyes onto the shoulders, the large side vines missing.

The fourth iteration is an assembled version of how the design looked prior to Everdraed joining development. The outermost eyes were moved back into the petals, while the side vines were re-added, now with mouths covering them instead of eyes. The fight's unused borders are also included. At this point, the TV, arms, and pipes connecting him to the ceiling were still using rough placeholders.

In the 10th Anniversary Stream, Toby stated the face on the monitor was made using Christine Love's Super Game Girl Camera, a browser app for taking webcam pictures in various levels of monochrome color reduction.[11] These faces are also featured in the UNDERTALE Art Book.[12] Similarly to Flowey's voice lines, Omega Flowey's "hurt" sounds also originate from 1960s McDonalds commercials, at 2:47 and 3:05 respectively.[13]

Trivia

  • Omega Flowey is programmed to have 9999 maximum HP, but starts the fight damaged, leaving him with 9950 HP instead.[14]
  • Within the game files, the teeth of Omega Flowey's green ball attack is referred to as dentata, derived from the Latin root meaning "tooth".
  • Omega Flowey's finger gun sprites having a green thumb may be a play on the idiom "having a green thumb", which is the ability to grow plants well.
Halloween Hack screenshot game over.gif
Animation of game over text in EarthBound Halloween Hack when losing to Dr. Andonuts.
  • The text in Omega Flowey's Game Over screen is a reference to EarthBound Halloween Hack, one of Toby Fox's first projects. In the hack, if the protagonist loses to Dr. Andonuts (who is the hack's final boss), the game over text reads "Oh, [protagonist name], it's all just a dream! Just kidding, you're dead forever", followed by infinite looping "ha"s.
  • When Flowey dares the protagonist to call for help, he first mocks them with "Mommy! Daddy! Somebody help!" and then states "But nobody came." after they call for help. This echoes the story Flowey tells to the protagonist at New Home on the Genocide Route.[15]
    • Additionally, this is a reference to EarthBound. In the final boss fight against Giygas, Pokey tells Ness, "Do you want to scream for help here in the dark?! Why not call your Mommy, [protagonist name]! Say, Mommy! Daddy! I'm so frightened! I think I'm gonna wet my pants!"
      • The protagonist having to call for help multiple times in order to progress through and end the fight is possibly a reference to Paula having to pray repeatedly in order to deplete Giygas's HP.
    • Flowey's response to the protagonist's call for help, "But nobody came.", is a line that recurs throughout the game, such as when encountering an enemy after the kill counter for an area has already been exhausted. It is likely another reference to EarthBound — specifically, a line seen when an enemy calls for help but no other enemies join the battle.
  • Omega Flowey's phases have set intervals, making him stop attacking after a certain time limit. This logic is also present in the battle's final phase, where the time limit is set to over 4 days straight. This means that Flowey will stop attacking entirely after 4 days in his final phase.[16] If the player somehow manages to endure fighting Flowey for 4 days, the FIGHT option will continue to appear, allowing the protagonist to defeat Flowey.
  • Unlike all other battles in the game (each of which has its own encounter ID), Omega Flowey's battle takes place in its own room, room_floweyx (room 294 in most versions and room 295 in the Xbox version), and thus it is not listed as a battle in the game data. If the player hacks their SAVE to enter this room, it crashes the game.
  • Omega Flowey's screen with a face resembles that of Yes Man from Fallout: New Vegas.
  • The SOUL attacks are partially resembled in Deltarune Chapter 5: Festival Day.
