Mettaton NEO

From Undertale Wiki

Mettaton NEO (JP: メタトンNEO) is the fourth boss on Undertale's Genocide Route. He is a transformation of Mettaton only encountered after defeating Undyne the Undying, replacing Mettaton EX on the Neutral Route.

Profile

Appearance

Mettaton NEO resembles Mettaton EX, but has a more combat-oriented design. His right forearm is replaced by what appears to be a cannon, pauldrons clad his shoulders, which are longer than his arms, and he has wings on his back. The SOUL on his waist points upwards in a more monster-like manner, and he has a heart shape engraved on his chest plate akin to Undyne the Undying, also mimicking the Delta Rune in the same ways. His hair on the right side is spiked out, revealing an entirely black segment of his face, with a sparkle or crosshair in place of his right eye.

Mettaton in the Lab on the Genocide Route

Mettaton shows up in Alphys's Lab and informs the protagonist that he will not battle them, knowing that he is no match for them. When he re-appears at the end of the CORE, he tells the protagonist he eventually realized that they mean not only to kill monsters, but all humanity as well. Claiming his original human eradication functions were never fully removed, he transforms into Mettaton NEO, stated to be his original form. However, he has no attacks, and the protagonist can destroy him in one strike.

Mettaton NEO has two different variations depending on whether the player is on track for the Genocide Route. His Genocide Route variation requires all three of the following conditions to be met:

Due to a glitch, the game always counts Royal Guards/Muffet as killed if the previous encounter was killed. This applies even if Muffet or Royal Guards are spared, which would yield Mettaton NEO's Genocide Route variation (assuming the Hotland/CORE kill count is exhausted) before reverting to a Neutral Route in New Home.

For Mettaton NEO's Genocide Route variation, any attack that hits will be scripted to inflict anywhere from 900,000 to 999,999 damage and destroys Mettaton NEO in a single hit. Missing does not abort the Genocide Route as the battle continues until he is destroyed. Upon his death, Mettaton NEO laments that the protagonist does not want to join his fan club and the protagonist's EXP is set to 50,000, resulting in their LOVE reaching 19.

Failing to meet any of the three aforementioned conditions results in a fight with Mettaton NEO that aborts the Genocide Route and leads to the Alphys Ending of the Neutral Route. He is still destroyed in a single attack, but the attack only deals 34,000 to 37,289 damage. Mettaton NEO points out the protagonist's lack of killing intent, telling them that they are not "ABSOLUTELY EVIL" before dying. This variation of the fight yields only 10,000 EXP.

In battle

Attacks

Despite claiming to be a human eradicator, Mettaton NEO has no attacks and does absolutely nothing.

Strategy

Battle with Mettaton NEO.

Any non-missing attack instantly kills Mettaton NEO, no matter its strength. There is no way to spare Mettaton NEO, meaning that the point at which the Genocide Route cannot be aborted occurs before fighting him, when the last regular encounter in Hotland or the CORE is killed.

Creation and development

According to an update post on the Undertale Kickstarter, Mettaton NEO was the last boss added to the game, and the completion of his battle marked the completion of the Genocide Route as a whole.[1] Mettaton NEO is the only boss to never have concept art shared.

Trivia

  • Mettaton NEO has the highest HP stat in the game at 30000 HP.
  • Using the debug mode to make Mettaton NEO spareable reveals he has two random attacks, which are Vulkin's lightning and the fire balls. Sparing or allowing him to attack a second time softlocks the game.[2]
  • Mettaton NEO's body closely resembles Asriel's final form, featuring wings, a heart on the chest and large, spiked shoulder pads.
  • Mettaton NEO was originally planned to appear as a boss in Deltarune, allowing players to fight a "real" version of him as the secret boss of Chapter 2. The concept for this fight evolved into Spamton NEO.[3]
  • When killed on the Neutral Route, Mettaton NEO is not tracked as a kill in the stats menu, nor for the remaining kill count for the area, despite contributing to both counters on the Genocide Route, the latter being exhausted before this battle and thus cannot be seen during normal gameplay. This makes him one of the few enemies to be killed without counting toward either of these values.
    • This is presumably to prevent the player from killing him with 39 out of 40 Hotland enemies killed, receiving his Neutral Route dialogue and EXP reward instead of being set to LV19, then continuing on with the Genocide Route at a lower LV than intended.
      • A similar trick can be performed against Toriel, as she is the only boss to lack a failsafe for this scenario. It would also be possible against Undyne, if not for her Undying form being tracked separately.

  3. After creating UNDERTALE, one of my goals for DELTARUNE was for players to finally be able to challenge a "real" version of Mettaton NEO that didn't just end in one turn. For that purpose, I actually created a few music mockups for an extended version of Power of NEO.
There's even another one from 2016 (lol)
… Unfortunately, try I might, I could never create a full-length version of the song that I was satisfied with. Eventually, the boss concept evolved to involve Spamton, and with that, the music changed as well.
