Black sausage
Black sausages[note 1][2] are a group of minor characters in Undertale. They are found throughout the CORE.
In the overworld, the black sausages take the form of featureless silhouettes, but it is implied that their true identities are the various mercenaries encountered in the CORE.
The black sausages are mercenaries hired by Mettaton to kill the protagonist. However, they all decided to quit due to lack of pay.
During their initial traversal of the CORE on the Neutral Route, groups of black sausages attack the protagonist at various points. They only appear as NPCs in the overworld after receiving Undyne's Letter (or after receiving the call directing the protagonist to it) on the True Pacifist Route.
The first black sausage appears in the fire pit to the right of the lobby. They are seen admiring the fire pit and relate how, when they were young, they would make a game of searching for it each time the CORE is re-arranged, making it feel special to them as they grew older.[3]
The second black sausage appears in the rectangular walkway to the left of the lobby. They explain that Mettaton hired them to destroy the protagonist, but they quit since they were never paid.[4]
The third black sausage appears along the branching crossroads to the north. The narration explains that it is taking a nap.
The fourth black sausage appears along the central path of the CORE Branch. They explain that the CORE was re-arranged specifically in anticipation of the protagonist's arrival.[5]
The fifth black sausage appears at the end of the warrior's path. They state that they all have an angle they look best from as a means of explaining why they look the way they do.[2]
