Snowdin
Snowdin (JP: スノーフル) is the second region the protagonist explores in the underground. They enter the region after defeating Toriel and receiving Flowey's judgment in the Ruins.
- Papyrus and Sans are the first characters to make their debut, and they host many of the puzzles the protagonist finds.
- The protagonist can find the Tough Glove in a Dimensional Box.
- The "Snowdin Canine Unit" resides here, making this region the most concentrated area of Royal Guard members in the underground.
- The final enemy of this region is Greater Dog. After passing them, the protagonist encounters Papyrus and Sans for the last time before reaching Snowdin Town.
- The mysterious door can be found near the end of the forest, which has a hidden enemy named Glyde.

The protagonist enters Snowdin after confronting Toriel and exiting the Ruins. Shortly after, Sans introduces himself and warns the protagonist about his brother Papyrus, who aspires to join the Royal Guard by capturing a human. When Papyrus notices the protagonist, he subjects them to various puzzles of his design. Sans frequently appears alongside Papyrus and banters with him.
While traveling through Snowdin, the protagonist encounters members of the Royal Guard's Snowdin Canine Unit, which consists of Doggo, Lesser Dog, the Dogi, and Greater Dog. Eventually, after encountering the last of Papyrus's puzzles, the protagonist reaches Snowdin Town and engages Papyrus in battle. From there, the protagonist proceeds into Waterfall.
If Papyrus was spared during his battle, many NPCs appear in Snowdin, some of which detail Snowdrake's backstory.
During his initial encounter, Sans notices the protagonist's lack of reaction to his joke.[1] The protagonist also walks through Papyrus's puzzles, to his dismay.[2] Sans attempts to redirect the protagonist,[3] but eventually threatens them and warns them of what will happen if they continue the Genocide Route.[4]
Snowdin shares many characteristics of a taiga biome. It is a heavily forested region that is perpetually blanketed in snow and ice. Coniferous trees form natural borders around each area, and dark patches of snow serve as pathways. Much of Snowdin sits on a raised cliff face, from which a large stretch of trees can be seem below.
The Snowdin region includes a large river that flows east. Ice Wolf uses this river to transport ice to the CORE.

The protagonist exits the Ruins in a heavily forested area with a single path leading east. The Delta Rune door behind them is closed and locked, preventing them from re-entering the Ruins. A stray bush is situated near the door, and interacting with it reveals that it contains one of Alphys's cameras.
At the end of the True Pacifist Route, the Ruins door opens, allowing the protagonist to enter the Ruins.
The eastern path is linear, though trees freckle the foreground, allowing Sans to appear as a silhouette as he follows the protagonist. A heavy branch also appears on the main path and, as the protagonist passes by it, the branch splinters.[5]
At the bridge, Sans introduces himself with a prank. His dialogue can vary slightly if the protagonist has SAVEd and has heard his introduction before. He informs the protagonist that his brother constructed the wooden bridge,[6] and tells the protagonist to hide behind a conveniently-shaped lamp. Papyrus appears and the brothers banter until Papyrus leaves to prepare his puzzles.
Afterwards, the protagonist can inspect Sans's sentry station[7] and interact with Sans. They can also check the tree behind the station and find another one of Alphys's cameras.
The next room is the Box Road intersection, which is split into two paths: north and east. A SAVE Point is situated near the entrance, and a Dimensional Box is situated near the eastern path. A sign explaining the box's functions sits next to the box itself. Encounters begin to occur here, with Snowdrake and Ice Cap having a chance of appearing.
The north exit of the Box Road connects to the river, with a fishing rod situated near the river bank. When interacting with it, the protagonist reels in the line to reveal a note attached.
After defeating Papyrus, if the fun value is 65, there is a 50% chance that the protagonist enters the Sound Test room instead of the river bank room. Upon exiting the Sound Test room, the protagonist ends up back in the river bank room.

When taking the eastern exit of the Box Road, the protagonist enters a long walkway with Papyrus's cardboard sentry station at the end. When initially entering the room, Papyrus and Sans stand in the middle of the walkway and converse, then notice the protagonist nearby. After they leave, the protagonist can read a note attached to the sentry station.[8] Behind the sentry station is another one of Alphys's cameras.
Depending on the fun value, a Cell Phone event may occur near the sentry station:
- If the fun value is between 40-45, Sans calls to ask if the refrigerator is running. Answering yes causes him to say that he will "be over to deposit the brewskis". Answering no causes him to say that he will send someone over to fix it.[9]
- If the fun value is between 46-50, Alphys calls to order pizza and attempts to send the requested toppings via text. However, what she actually sends over is ASCII art of an anime catgirl, which the protagonist's cell phone, being too old to receive texts, reads out loud, character by character.[10]
The next room is smaller, and contains Doggo's sentry station. The station is preceded by a sign near the entrance that warns the reader not to move. When passing in front of the sentry station, Doggo appears and initiates a battle. Doggo's encounter introduces blue attacks.
If Doggo was spared, the protagonist can repeatedly ring the bell to get different reactions from Doggo. At the end of the room is some smoked dog treats.

Past Doggo's station is an intersection with a large patch of ice the protagonist can slide on, with a sign at the center of the ice. The sign describes that ice is in all directions and that Snowdin Town is to the east. Nearby is Sans, who can provide a hint about Papyrus's special attack. Lesser Dog also has a chance of appearing here.
North of the ice field leads to the Snowman, who asks the protagonist to take piece of himself to take with them on their travels. On the Genocide Route, the protagonist forcibly takes three pieces of the Snowman, reducing him to a pile of snow.
To the east of the ice field leads to a square room with a darkened patch of snow. The Invisible Electricity Maze, hosted by Sans and Papyrus, occurs here. After the puzzle, Sans stays behind and can speak to the protagonist about Papyrus's outfit.

The next area is a larger room with a large patch of snow. This patch serves as the Ball Game, and has a snowball situated at the top. At the bottom is a hole, which elicits an exited reaction if inspected before the ball is pushed in. On a route in which the kill counter for Snowdin is exhausted, checking the hole causes the narration to state, "There's a hole here."
The Nice Cream guy sets up his Nice Cream cart near the entrance. There is a stray snowball at the bottom right of the area which the narration describes as a "snowdecahedron", though on the Genocide Route, it is only described as a snowball. A lump of snow to the left of the stray snowball contains one of Alphys's cameras.
Sans stands near the northeastern exit. Interacting with him causes him to try to sell fried snow for GOLD, though he gradually raises the price.
The northeastern exit of the Ball Game room leads to the sentry stations of the Dogi, and also includes a sign that explains "smell danger ratings".[11]
The southeastern exit of the large room leads to another encounter with Sans and Papyrus. A word search lies on the ground, provided by Sans.[12] After Papyrus leaves, Sans stays behind and can speak to the protagonist about Papryus.

East of the word search is the Spaghetti room, which contains a SAVE Point, a note from Papyrus,[13] frozen spaghetti that is stuck to the table it is on,[14] and a microwave. The microwave and spaghetti are on separate tables. A wall to the north has a mouse hole and, atop this ledge, there appears to be frozen flowers. On the True Pacifist Route, the dialog of the table changes.[15]
The east exit of the Spaghetti room leads to a large room whose exit is blocked by spikes. A sign is situated near the entrance, warning the protagonist of a "dog marriage", and the tree next to it hides one of Alphys's cameras.
At the bottom left of the room, there is a map covered in snow that the protagonist can reveal by walking over it. The switch to retract the spikes is located between two coniferous trees in the upper right of the room. After passing the retracted spikes, the protagonist encounters the Dogi.
Encounters against Jerry first occur in this room.
Once the Dogi are defeated, the protagonist can leave the large room through the south exit and complete the first XOXO puzzle. Once completed, spikes near the east exit of the room retract, and Papyrus questions the protagonist about the state of his spaghetti trap.[16]

After leaving through the east exit, the protagonist encounters the second XOXO puzzle that Papyrus supervises because he modified the puzzle while he was waiting.[17] Again, spikes prevent the protagonist from leaving the room through the east exit until they complete the puzzle.
The next room hosts the first instance of the Multicolor Tile Puzzle, which has a console that resembles Mettaton. Both Sans and Papyrus look on as the machine creates a simple "puzzle" for the protagonist to solve; Papyrus spins out of the room without saying a word. Sans stays behind and can speak to the protagonist about Papyrus's cooking.
If the protagonist asks Papyrus to repeat the rules for the Multicolor Tile Puzzle multiple times, he becomes confused and tells the protagonist to try the puzzle on their own. Papyrus leaves illegible instructions[18] and walks offscreen.

Leaving the Tile Puzzle room through the east exit leads to the Dog House room, which contains Lesser Dog's sentry station and, depending on the protagonist's actions during Lesser Dog's encounter, snow sculptures with varying degrees of detail. If the protagonist killed Lesser Dog, the statues are replaced with a pile of mushy snow.
One of Alphys's cameras is situated behind Lesser Dog's sentry station.
The east exit of this room leads to the third and final XOXO puzzle, which the protagonist has to slide on ice to solve. Falling off of the edge of this puzzle causes the protagonist to leave this room and appear in a room directly south of the XOXO puzzle. This room contains a snow Papyrus and a lump of snow with Sans's name written on it. The north exit of this room leads back to the XOXO puzzle.
A bridge that leads to the east exit of the room forms after the protagonist completes the puzzle, and they can slide through a tunnel of coniferous trees to get to the next area. Upon passing through the trees, four possible shapes can form on the protagonist's head: a house, a bird, a hat or a dog, though these shapes crumble away as soon as the protagonist stops sliding.
Directly south of the bridge is an area where the protagonist encounters Gyftrot. Sans appears in this room and reappears immediately after he goes off-screen.

In the area outside the room with the mysterious door, there is a tiny house seen beyond the cliff. The moment the house is on-screen, a timer is randomly set between 10 and 13 seconds, and once this timer is up, a person leaves the house and walks around for a little while, before going back inside. Once the person returns to the house, this process repeats, as long as the house is on-screen once more.
Within the small room that contains the mysterious door, two lantern mushrooms can be turned on and off with no consequence. Within this small room, the protagonist can encounter a hidden enemy, Glyde.

Backtracking to the ice bridge's exit, if the protagonist travels east, they encounter a room full of snow poffs. If every snow poff is inspected and interacted with, the protagonist receives 30G. This room also contains the small doghouse of Greater Dog. Near the east exit, Greater Dog's encounter with the protagonist occurs after they rise out of the snow disguised as a snow poff.
After defeating Greater Dog, the protagonist can leave the room through the east exit and approach the last puzzle, The Gauntlet of Deadly Terror. Papyrus threatens to activate the Gauntlet but ultimately decides not to.[19] Calling Papyrus in this area reveals the long bridge is not actually a bridge, but rather a rock formation he painted over to look more dramatic.[20]
Two of Alphys's cameras are situated at both ends of the bridge.
After crossing over the long bridge, the protagonist enters Snowdin Town, in which many of Snowdin's inhabitants live. East of the area is a foggy walkway on which the protagonist battles Papyrus. After the battle, they can continue to Waterfall.

Snowdin received an expansion in the Undertale 10th Anniversary Stream. The southern offshoot received a slide that takes the protagonist to the lower levels of Snowdin.
The area is expansive, with trees dotting the ground. A lumberjack NPC is present attempting to cut down a tree. The area continues east to a dog-shaped elevator that leads the protagonist back to the top. The region then continues as normal.
The expanded Snowdin area was shown off twice: once during the initial playthrough and again during the True Pacifist Route epilogue. During the epilogue, the mysterious door is open, leading to a hole that takes the protagonist to the Dog Hole.
