Unused music tracks

From Undertale Wiki
(Redirected from Undertale (Unused))

Undertale has a number of unused music tracks that are not present in the Undertale Demo OST or UNDERTALE Soundtrack. These range from full tracks to sound effects, some of which are located outside the game files.

Within the game files

abc_123_a

Hello. He-ha-he-ha-have some respect and don't spoil the game.
It's impossible to have mysteries nowadays,
because of nosy people like you.
Please keep all of this between us.
If you post it online, I won't make any more secrets.
No one will be impressed.
It will be your fault!

The original abc_123_a audio file

This sound file contains seven text-to-speech voices from the FL Studio speech synthesizer, which tell the listener not to post the game's secrets online. The odd filename was chosen to force it at the top of an alphabetical file listing and make its presence more obvious considering that all the other .ogg-format music and sound effect files present in the executable are prefixed with either mus_ or snd_.

As of v1.001, this sound file has simply been changed into laughter, presumably because numerous sources have already explored the secrets of Undertale.

mus_smile

This track plays in room_gaster, a room which contains W.D. Gaster's ENTRY NUMBER SEVENTEEN. It is only accessible via editing a SAVE file or debug mode.

The track can be sped up by 1000% and have its pitch doubled to reveal Muffet's laugh, which has been reversed and looped. The distortion used here is a stretching method named "e2 speech" in FL Studio.[1] However, some effects may have been applied to the original laugh before the stretch.

This audio is also featured in Deltarune, albeit shortened. It plays when using the Cell Phone in the Dark World, at Hometown's shelter at 15% speed, and in the basement of Noelle's House.

mus_kingdescription

A regal-sounding variation of Determination. Its filename suggests that it was intended to play when Asgore was being described.

mus_star

This track uses instruments from the SNES game Star Fox, similar to how Dogsong uses instruments from another SNES title, Mario Paint.

mus_f_part3

An unused third part of Your Best Nightmare which includes the alarm sound effect, although the last part can be heard on the ending of the 3rd and 5th stages. This part of the track does not actually play and was scrapped in favor of reusing mus_f_part1, mus_f_part2, mus_repeat_1, mus_repeat_2, and mus_endnote. In the UNDERTALE Soundtrack version, Your Best Nightmare repeats the first part at the end.

This part was likely intended to be used in the final part of the fight, when the human SOULs rebel against and defeat Omega Flowey.

mus_f_finale_1

An unused first part of Finale. This track never plays in-game, as mus_f_finale_1_l plays instead. It is a shorter version of the first part of Finale, likely intended for when the player restarts their game after dying in the 2nd part of the battle against Omega Flowey.

mus_ruinspiano

This track is a slower version of Ruins with a variation on the melody. It is a slowed down version of the first part of An Ending. While separate files for the second and third parts also exist, they are used and have no changes in speed.

Outside the game files

Alphys Lab (Unused)

Because the anniversary is two days away, I'll post the music that was unused in the game. (Somehow, it wasn't very much.)
This is an early unfinished version of Alphys' lab. It sounded too similar to a certain lab song from another game, so I scrapped it. While I think the new one fits Alphys more, the last part of this one is actually pretty cool.

Toby Fox, Tumblr

An early version of Alphys that was left unfinished since it sounded too similar to a lab song from another game.[2]

Undyne Battle (Unused)

I think this is the most finished-sounding of all the unused tracks. I made this before I really knew Undyne's personality, so while the arrangement is good, I felt like it didn't sound enough like being heroically punched in the face.

Toby Fox, Tumblr

An early version of Spear of Justice made before Undyne's personality was fleshed out. It was left unfinished since it didn't feel like "being heroically punched in the face".[3]

Dogtroid (Unused)

Originally I was going to make it if you beat the game fast enough, you'd be able to see the annoying dog in a bikini.

Toby Fox, Tumblr

This track would have played upon beating the game fast enough. Once this happened, the Annoying Dog would appear in a bikini; both this and the track's title are references to the Metroid series.[4]

Undertale (Unused)

Before the song "UNDERTALE" was completed, it went through a completely different iteration. This version sounds a bit more sad, which I think would have been less effective.
It wasn't until I heard a certain song that I was inspired to completely change the chords and guitar accompaniment. This new guitar accompaniment then served as the basis for "Memory," so we have a lot to thank that inspiring song for.
That's all of the unused songs. See you tomorrow for a brief retrospective on my past year.

Toby Fox, Tumblr

An unused iteration of Undertale, which was said to be more melancholic and less effective. This iteration was scrapped when "Redline Day" from the anime film Redline[5] inspired Toby Fox to change the chords and guitar accompaniment, which would then serve as the basis for Memory.[6]
