Major Arcana

The Fool

The Fool means beginnings, innocence, spontaneity, and being a free spirit but when reversed it means holding back, recklessness, and taking risks.

In Frisk case's, it takes about their journey in the Underground while helping the monsters resolve their issues and explore each of their own character and desires, and it also takes about in the True Pacifist Route where the player chooses to go by themself to explore the world when Toriel offers them a chance to stay with her. In reverse, it deciphers the player's choices by using SAVE to reset to a previous point they done something horrible but also reckless and take risks which are further decipher in the Genocide Route.

For Ice-E, it could represent in literal and metaphorical in terms of its appearance and as a puzzle. Being upright or reversed, it deciphers about the Monster Kidz Word Search being an unsolvable word search puzzle that Sans sets up to trap Frisk.

The Magician

The Magician stands for manifestation, resourcefulness, power, inspired action but in reverse it means manipulation, poor planning, and untapped talents.

For Asriel Dreemurr, when he was the God of Hyperdeath, Asriel used his godlike powers to destroy the Barrier and set all the monsters free, allowing them to coexist with the humans on the surface. In reverse, before meeting Frisk, Asriel was using his powers to battle in a deluded state he mistook them for their late sibling that he wanted to see again.

The High Priestess

The High Priestess stands for intuition, sacred knowledge, divine feminine, and the subconscious mind but in reverse it stands for secrets, disconnected from intuition, withdrawal and silence.

In Alphys' case, it reflects her position as the Royal Scientist, her experiments to help the monsters, and providing information to Frisk to with Mettaton's puzzles. In reverse, when Alphys accidentally created Amalgamates in an attempt to extend their longevity and became remorseful that she kept it to herself, and is rather insecure about herself and her accomplishments.

The Empress

The Empress stands for femininity, beauty, nature, nurturing, and abundance but in reverse it means creative block and dependence on others.

For Toriel, it reflects on her motherly nature and looking after the fallen human children that fell into the Underground. In reverse, Toriel became overprotective of the children that she encounters to keep them safe, as she wanted to keep Frisk safe after failing to keep the six children before them leaving the Ruins.

The Emperor

The Emperor means authority, establishment, structure, and a father figure but in reverse it means domination, excessive control, lack of discipline, and inflexibility.

For Asgore Dreemurr, as the king of monsters, Asgore cares for them and is very well-respected and admired by his people. In reverse, after losing two of his children, Asgore declared war on humanity, he would kill any human that fell into the Underground and plot to use their souls to break the barrier so the monsters would be free.

The Hierophant

The Hierophant stands for spiritual wisdom, religious beliefs, conformity, tradition, and institutions but in reverse it stands for personal beliefs, freedom, and challenging the status quo.

In Papyrus' case, it reflects on his kind heart, optimism, and bravery, and he believes in others. In reverse, it is reflected in the Papyrus Ending, when a crowned Papyrus takes the mantle he is the only leader to take up a level of judgement upon fallen humans that is to not judge them as all good or bad.

The Lovers

The Lovers stands for love, harmony, relationships, values alignment, and choices but in reverse it stands for self-love, disharmony, imbalance, and misalignment of values.

For both the Royal Guards and Dogamy and Dogaressa, it reflects on their love for each other. In reverse, if the player kills one of the them, their lover will get angry, resentful, and their attacks become out of sync.

The Chariot

The Chariot means control, willpower, success, action, and determination but in reverse it means self-discipline, opposition, and lack of direction.

For Undyne, this is exemplified in the Genocide Route when she becomes Undyne the Undying, out of the monsters Undyne is the most with determination, from seeing the player is far more troubling than she thought that the player isn't just going to destroy all monsters but humans too, and aims to stop them at any cost. In reverse, in spite of her spirit and goal, she still holds her value of pacifism as when binding the player's soul, she still offers them a shield to protect themself against the spears once she turns their soul green.

Strength

Strength symbolizes strength, courage, persuasion, influence, and compassion but in reverse it symbolizes inner strength, self-doubt, low energy, and raw emotion.

In Greater Dog's case, it reflects on its affectionate nature. In reverse, its playful nature can be troubling and brutal.

The Hermit

The Hermit symbolizes soul-searching, introspection, being alone, and inner guidance but in reverse it symbolizes isolation, loneliness, and withdrawal.

For Gerson, he provides knowledge and insight about the culture and history surrounding the Underground and Delta Rune. In reverse, it could represent Gerson isolating himself by becoming a vendor after The War of Humans and Monsters.

Wheel of Fortune

Wheel of Fortune stands for good luck, karma, life cycles, destiny, and a turning point but in reverse it stands for bad luck, resistance to change, and breaking cycles.

For Temmie, it could represent for the Tem Shop, if the player sells some items the shopkeeper offers a higher price for an item she finds a liking to. In reverse, if the player further refuses to sell an item, that item won't be sold again.

Justice

Justice symbolizes justice, fairness, truth, cause and effect, and law but in reverse it symbolizes unfairness, lack of accountability, and dishonesty.

For Undyne, while she wants to capture Frisk, she wants to defeat them fairly as she explains about Green Mode and offers them a shield to protect themself against the arrows once she turns their soul green. In reverse, while Undyne admires Papyrus for his persistence she secretly doesn't want him to join the Royal Guards because she believes he is too nice to fight, so she teaches him cooking in hopes that he changes his mind.

The Hanged Man

The Hanged Man symbolizes pause, surrender, letting go, and new perspectives but in reverse it symbolizes delays, resistance, stalling, and indecision.

In Flowey's case, when fighting Frisk in the True Pacifist Route, Flowey lets go of his remorse that lead to his and Chara's deaths that lead him to be stuck in the past. In reverse, it represents Flowey's previous guilt and using his newfound Determination and SAVE to experiment the timelines in attempt to feel kindness and affection again.

Death

Death means endings, change, transformation, and transition but in reverse it means resistance to change, personal transformation, and inner purging.

For Asriel Dreemurr, when he took the form of the Angel of Death, with his godlike powers to destroy but used it to destroy the Barrier that allows the monsters to come up to the Surface, and letting go of his guilt that got himself and Chara killed years ago. In reverse, it represents how Asriel blamed himself for getting him and his sibling killed, and using his said powers to "play" with them just because he wanted to see Chara again.

Temperance

Temperance stands for balance, moderation, patience, and purpose but in reverse it means imbalance, excess, self-healing, and re-alignment.

For Muffet, she was holding bake sale with the purpose of raising funds to rescue the spiders trapped in the Ruins. In reverse, while her intentions are good, some of the food she sells are very expensive leading Muffet to accuse Frisk of being stingy when they were unable to buy a Spider Donut or Spider Cider.

The Devil

The Devil represents shadow self, attachment, addiction, restriction, and sexuality but in reverse it represents releasing limiting beliefs, exploring dark thoughts, and detachment.

For Chara, it reflects on their behavior, regarding they laugh when Asgore Dreemurr was poison, and how they were willing to use Asriel's power to against the humans that were attacking them, but also their genuine attachment towards their adoptive family. In reverse, it greatly exemplifies in the Genocide Route where the human killed every monster in the Underground, including their adoptive parents.

The Tower

The Tower stands for sudden change, upheaval, chaos, revelation, and awakening but in reverse it stands for personal transformation, fear of change, and averting disaster.

In Photoshop Flowey's case, after Flowey absorbed the six human souls, he transformed and aim to kill Frisk while using his powers to destroy in any way. In reverse, if choosing to spare him after defeating Flowey, he declares he won't change his "kill, or be killed" motto.

The Star

The Star means hope, faith, purpose, renewal, and spirituality but in reverse it means lack of faith, despair, self-trust, and disconnection.

For Mettaton, it reflects on him and his show inspiring the monsters in the Underground, and how he wanted to kill Frisk because he didn't want Asgore Dreemurr to reign war on humanity. In reverse, for his part, Mettaton wanted to use Frisk's soul to escape the Underground so he can become a superstar on the Surface.

For Mettaton NEO, for the part in the Genocide Route, he wanted to prevent the human killing not only the monsters but the humans as well. In reverse, despite Mettaton's upgrade, the human was too powerful for him to fight.

The Moon

The Moon stands for illusion, fear, anxiety, subconscious, and intuition but in reverse it means release of fear, repressed emotion, and inner confusion.

In Napstablook's case, he cries in battle, indicating he's depressed or anxious, and has poor self-esteem. In reverse, he happens to be courteous and polite.

The Sun

The Sun stands for positivity, fun, warmth, success, and vitality but in reverse it stands for inner child, feeling down, and overly optimistic.

For Monster Kid, they are energetic and seem happy most of the time who greatly idolizes Undyne. In reverse, Monster Kid tends to get in the way when Undyne tries to capture Frisk.

For Grillby, it could represent him being a bartender who greets his customers and commends Frisk for a "good job" in the True Pacifist Route. In reverse, if Papyrus is killed, he gets nervous as Sans is his best customer and he has not shown up all day.

Judgement

Judgement means judgement, rebirth, inner calling, and absolution but in reverse it stands for self-doubt, inner critic, and ignoring the call.

For Sans, he judges Frisk on the choices he makes, and in the Genocide Route it greatly exemplifies him taking action by making sure they won't complete their goal. In reverse, considering his lazy nature, Sans knows about SAVE and guarantees even if the monsters are set free they would round up back in the Undergound without any memory, and taking into account of the Genocide Route he only took action when the human was at the judgement hall, noting he could've stop them at any time.

For Heats Flamesman, in regards to being upright or in reverse, it could possibly stand for when he tells Frisk to remember his name, and, whether they remember or not, he will put on a flabbergasted expression and remark that he was easily defeated.

The World

The World means completion, integration, accomplishment, and travel but in reverse it means seeking personal closure, short-cuts, and delays.

In Mt. Ebott's case, it reflects in each of three routes on how the player gets through the Underground to complete their goal, whether their own or for others. In reverse, the obstacles represent the monsters getting in the human child's way or use their soul to achieve their own desires.

For Jerry, it could represent Jerry is there to bolster the offensive capabilities of other monsters he is with. In reverse, he himself has so attacks and happens to not be a satisfiable person in general.

For Stronger Monsters, it is only set up until the end of the Ruins. In reverse, the monsters that are replaced are much tougher.

Minor Arcana

Cups

Two of Cups

Two of Cups means unified love, partnership, and mutual attraction but in reverse it means self-love, break-ups, disharmony, and distrust.

For Bratty and Catty, it reflects on their friendship and their partnership as vendors. In reverse, they sometimes bicker, like with assuming Frisk who had a Glamburger them, each of them thought the human brought it to them, or when each of them believed Mettaton is their husband.

Swords

Ace of Swords

Ace of Swords means breakthroughs, new ideas, mental clarity, and success but in reverse it means inner clarity, re-thinking an idea, and clouded judgement.

For Mad Dummy, this is explored in the Genocide Route where his hatred towards the human's actions fulfills their lifelong wish when they fused with their body. In reverse, it reflects in the Neutral Route and True Pacifist Route, they get angry at Frisk depend what they did to the Dummy in Ruins, it also clouded his judgement as with getting it by their dummy minions, and having only one knife.

Two of Swords

Two of Swords means difficult decisions, weighing up options, an impasse, and avoidance but in reverse it means indecision, confusion, information overload, and stalemate.

For Doggo, it reflects on how he is occasionally unsure of himself, and how he checks on something that moves due to his inability to see anyone or anything that is stationary. In reverse, he enjoys being petted which compromise his job as a sentry.

Eight of Swords

Eight of Swords stands for negative thoughts, self-imposed restriction, imprisonment, and victim mentality but in reverse it stands for self-limiting beliefs, inner critic, releasing negative thoughts, and open to new perspectives.

For Onionsan, it reflects about the Waterfall being their favorite but as well as their concern about the water getting very shallow, they are lonely as they desperately engage Frisk in a conversation, and can't go with their friends to a crowded aquarium in the city as it is full. In reverse, they try to maintain a positive outlook, saying that Undyne will fix everything and that someday they will get out and live in the ocean, and they started a band called the "Red Hot Chibi Peppers" despite not knowing how to sing or play instruments.

Page of Swords

Page of Swords means new ideas, curiosity, thirst for knowledge, and new ways of communicating but in reverse it means self-expression, all talk and no action, haphazard action, and haste.

For Lesser Dog, it reflects it spends most of its time making snowdogs and gets overexcited from being petted. In reverse, it never finishes the snowdogs he makes, and if petted enough, it makes the snowdogs will break by adding too much snow to the necks.

Pentacles

Knight of Pentacles

Knight of Pentacles stands for hard work, productivity, routine, and conservatism but in reverse it stands for self-discipline, boredom, feeling ‘stuck’, and perfectionism.

For Small Bird, it will carry anyone across the gap if they wish and will never say no. In reverse, it doesn't appear in the Genocide Route.

Wands

Page of Wands

Page of Wands stands for inspiration, ideas, discovery, limitless potential, and free spirit but in reverse it stands for newly-formed ideas, redirecting energy, self-limiting beliefs, and a spiritual path.

In Burgerpants' case, he wanted to be an actor and further explore in the True Pacifist Route he saw this as an opportunity to fulfill his dream. In reverse, his dream of becoming an actor also reflects his dislike towards his job and is highly stressed.
