Newsletter

From Undertale Wiki
(Redirected from ISSUE 2 - Spring 2023)

The Undertale/Deltarune Newsletter is a free email system for new Undertale and Deltarune-themed content, merchandise, and updates on any of Toby Fox's other projects. He also shares personal commentary and occasional art for the newsletter topics.

It was first mentioned on November 18, 2022 on Toby Fox's official Twitter,[1] and was announced on the official Undertale Twitter on November 20, 2022.[2] Newsletter releases may also be announced via the official websites, or on social media such as the official Undertale Bluesky[3] and Toby's Bluesky.[4][5]

An archive of all released newsletters can be found on Toby Fox's Fangamer webpage. The archived newsletters are "Truck Freak" tier, and are sorted by the newest at the top of the page, and the older newsletters at the bottom. Certain Newsletter content in the archive is also slightly altered from the email version.

Mailing Tier Lists

Users can sign up on the official Undertale website or Deltarune website for free to receive newsletter updates in the form of emails. Users can also optionally input their name and favorite food, which can appear exclusively in the email version of the newsletter. There are four types of Mailing List tiers:

  • MINIMAL: This tier list will only email to announce when Deltarune's next Chapter will be released.
  • NORMAL: This subscription is for the seasonal newsletter for both Undertale and Deltarune, including games and events such as Deltarune's Spamton Sweepstakes.
  • SUPER: This subscription includes updates for all of the above, and any new content Toby Fox is working on, such as original songs.
  • TRUCK FREAK: Selecting this includes emails for any type of content. This includes the accidental "Foam Shower Tier" on April 1, 2023.[6][7]

Information Summaries

The original newsletters are linked via the newsletter's release date. Newsletters are documented from oldest on top, to newest. Most Newsletters come in three sections: Deltarune News, Collaborations, and Merchandise, and several more with additional content. Themed sprites and art of the Undertale and Deltarune cast are spread to compliment each newsletter, which were created by Temmie Chang.[8][9]

ISSUE 1 and ISSUE 2 also feature "Seasonal Comics", which were intended to be a trend with newsletters. These comics appear to be one of Undertale Kickstarter's stretch goals.

Sent out on December 20, 2022, a news recap was included in this newsletter due to lack of development updates.

It provides a brief summary of the Spamton Sweepstakes and the September 2022 Status Update. The newsletter also features two behind-the-scenes photos of wayneradiotv in his Spamton attire.

A variety of brief segments are also included here, such as Papyrus questioning where "Junior Jumble" is, and a new character, which is Toby's art of fridge Mettaton, bean Sans, and a miniature of Deltarune's Starwalker. This image was previously shared on the Undertale Twitter as an early teaser for this newsletter.[10]

This newsletter also reaffirms that special events may occur on Undertale's anniversary, which is September 15, 2015.[11]

  • A rejected song that was originally for an unspecified rhythm game. Toby describes it as "a factory of dogs getting hit on the head with giant cartoon squeaky hammers". He had created this song as a demo before any instructions were given. Toby explains he was unable to "give it [his] all" if the song does not involve the game's story, character, or scene. However, Toby also states he will try his best to create a different song for the game.

Deltarune News

Chapter 3 is now playable from beginning to end. A stealth section was also mentioned. However, it was cut since a mechanic which "basically just makes you move slower" was not deemed fun. Toby also supplied the unused song, sneaking, which was originally apart of this segment.

Collaborations

  • Toby Fox x ZUN Collab!?: Toby Fox created a track with ZUN, the creator of Touhou Project, for Touhou Danmaku Kagura: Phantasia Lost, an officially sanctioned fan-game. He also includes an announcement video message, where he explains the story and process for this track, which also includes ZUN's arrangement of Battle Against a True Hero.

Sent out on October 31, 2023. Toby Fox acknowledges October 31, 2018 as Deltarune's anniversary, with this newsletter being released on Deltarune's 5th anniversary.[24] This is the first newsletter to not be considered its own issue.

While Sans's sprites depicts him as being in his usual clothes for Halloween, this is a reference to two of Sans's unused excerpts from the UNDERTALE Alarm Clock, which was featured during Undertale's 2nd anniversary.[25][26][27]

Deltarune News

Deltarune's Chapter 3 is complete in terms of dialogue and gameplay. Toby describes that on his birthday, one of his friends visited him and played the entire Chapter. After enjoying seeing his friend laugh at the jokes in game, Toby had asked for feedback. His friend commented that "the bullets seemed kind of hard..." and Toby writes that he "immediately" forgot this feedback.[28]

Toby updates that Deltarune will instead be released once Chapter 4 is complete, rather than the original plan of making Deltarune purchasable once Chapter 3, 4, and Chapter 5 is complete. Toby also informs that he has hired Robert Sephazon as a new producer, who will help speed up game development for future chapters.[29] Additionally, Toby notes that development updates will temporarily be less detailed afterwards, and will only inform when it is near completion, or if something amusing occurs.[30]

As such, she was inspired to draw three pieces of art of the Royal Guards spending time together for the Newsletter.[31][32]

Valentines 2024

A total of 44 different Valentines[33] was sent out in the email version, with each recipient receiving three random Valentines. The rarity of certain Valentines vary, with some being distinctly rarer than others.[34]

The characters featured in the Valentines are as follows:

Undertale:

  • Alphys's Valentines: 3 common. Alphys expresses her appreciation in the first. The second does not include Alphys's sprite, and is described as an "anonymous letter". The third is Alphys telling a Valentines joke.
  • Burgerpants's Valentines: 2 rare. Both compliment each other. Burgerpants expresses disliking his job of sending letters for Mettaton, and Valentines Day. In the second card, Burgerpants becomes surprised that the recipient sent him a card.

One of which involves removing a Valentines balloon that a dog keeps getting tangled in. The other is for Sans to get "RED FRILLY CONSTRUCTION PAPER" so that he can accept the recipient's Valentines challenge.
  • Sans's Valentines: 3 total. 1 common, 1 rare, 1 super rare. In all three, Sans pranks the recipient.
  • Toriel's Valentines: 4 total. 2 common, 2 rare. Three of them are jokes, and one references her Cell Phone call, where she asks the protagonist's flavor preference.
  • Undyne's Valentines: 2 common. Undyne lifts a "two ton heart-shaped boulder" at the recipient's door. In the second one, Undyne offers to attack bothersome Valentines.

Deltarune:

  • Berdly's Valentines: 2 total. 1 common, 1 rare. Berdly states that to become his Valentine, the recipient must complete the attached IQ test, which has an ELO rating system. The second card is rare and a continuation card, where he states the recipient has failed. However, Berdly asks for their resume in "extracurricular romance" so they can try again.
  • Hathy's Valentines: 1 common. "(Shoots you with hearts)"
  • Jockington's Valentines: 1 rare. Jockington writes, "Tennis Ball".

  • Noelle's Valentines: 1 common. "Happy Holidays from the Holidays!!!" with Christmas lights surrounding the red hearts border.
  • Queen's Valentines: 3 common. In one of them, Queen temporarily unblocks her "Ex" to make them remember how "hot" she is.
  • Ralsei's Valentines: 4 total. 2 common, 2 rare. Two cards feature Ralsei being timid towards the recipient. The other two cards are meant for Lancer and Susie, and both have Susie causing mischief at the end.

  • Spamton's Valentines: 3 common, 1 rare. One includes Spamton claiming he has "leaked military documents" which includes the "LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.TXT.vbs" attachment.

The 39th Valentine is exceedingly rare, and the sender is unknown. This Valentines sender asks if the recipient enjoyed "DELTA RUNE". Additionally, the sender mentions wanting to help someone, but cannot remember who that someone is.[35] However, this Valentines has since been blanked out and only depicts the red hearts and black background.

The Forgotten Man found in Mancountry speaks similar to the unknown author, and also mentions the act of "washing your face". This can indicate that the 39th letter was written by him.

Deltarune News

  • A few cutscenes

  • Few remaining gimmick iterations. Toby cites Cyber World's teacup rides as a type of gimmick.

Additionally, Toby states he is still uncertain on the game's release date.

Collaborations

In this section, Toby mentions watching Katana's first Undertale playthrough, and how her voice and Angel aesthetic convinced him to ask if they can collaborate. During the instrumental demo, Toby had considered adding this song to Deltarune if it was rejected.

Toby further details that he can relate with Katana losing her hearing in one ear, as Katana has a dream of being an artist and a musician. Toby writes his personal, positive beliefs in this newsletter that this song is of pursuing hopes and dreams, regardless of loss.[36] Toby also provides Camellia's arrangement as an mp3 file in the Newsletter.

This newsletter was sent out on July 30, 2024.

Deltarune News

Toby states that Chapter 3 and 4 together are longer than Chapter 1 and 2 combined.[38] Chapter 5's progress has also been steady, with some team members already working on initial drafts for maps, bullet patterns, etc. Toby is confident the release schedule will be smoother for later Chapters.

As of July 23rd, 2024 Chapter 4's development progress includes:

  • All maps were finished.
  • All battles are playable.
  • Two cutscenes need small improvements.
  • One battle needs balancing and completed visuals.
  • One battle needs a better background.
  • Two battles need improved ending sequences.
  • Three of Toby's friends have played through the unfinished Chapter 4 in its entirety. In a side note, one of his friends (later revealed to be Brian Lee)[39] kept suggesting the chairs in Ralsei's castle should be named due to "Chairiel" in the Dreemurr residence, though Toby admits this is unlikely.[40]

QUESTS TO RELEASE CHAPTER 3&4!!: A series of "quests" for the release of Chapters 3 & 4 were released, showing what is left before the game's release. Included with this is a rework of the Chapter system, which uses a brand-new function of GameMaker added specially for Deltarune, developed by YoYo Games. An upcoming test version of Deltarune Chapter 1&2 is also announced, acting as a large-scale beta test on Steam and itch.io for this new function.

Interviews

INTERVIEW: What do you think about the number nine?: An interview with Sans about his thoughts on the number nine. The question itself is answered in the first textbox, with the rest being banter between Toriel, Papyrus, Sans, Undyne, and Alphys.

Letter

A letter was included by Toby the end of the newsletter.[47] It is implied to be from Asriel about the fallen human, and 9 being their favorite number.

My best friend's favorite number is nine.
It's because
there isn't a number that's higher.
9. 99. 999. 9999.
If everything gets high enough,
You become invincible.
Nothing can hurt you anymore.
Nothing can hurt anyone anymore.
But isn't it scary, to think there's a highest number?
That, if you made 99 good memories,
you couldn't hold anymore.
So I don't like to keep count
of the flowers we pick, or the times that they laugh,
or how many scary faces they make.
I just hope
we'll be friends
for 999 more years.

ISSUE 8 - Holiday 2024

Annoying Dog artwork frozen.png
The Annoying Dog frozen in an ice crystal sticking out of the snow.

This newsletter was sent out on December 18, 2024. Unlike other newsletters, the background of this newsletter is entirely white.

This newsletter features the announcement of Toby Fox's official Bluesky account. He details about posting on Bluesky, including teaser posts about "chicken, which actually resembles an image of a dog climbing", which alludes to the climbing segment in Chapter 4's 3rd Sanctuary. There is also a song about carpet, where the lyrics are from the Persona: Trinity Soul track Burning Men's Soul , and Jackenstein's theme, A DARK ZONE. Additionally, Toby has archived various "Roast Chicken" Bluesky posts on his Fangamer page.[48]

Deltarune News

Toby is certain that Chapter 3 and 4 will release in 2025.

  • LTS TESTING: GameMaker was updated for its new chapter-switching command. However, Toby mentions that there are unforeseen issues due to this. This can range from new crashes, and previously patched bugs. The developing team has done their best to fix this, though they are unsure if all errors were resolved. Toby states that GameMaker will have to be updated again after Chapter 3 and 4's release, which may repeat these errors.
The LTS testing was initially shared on the official Undertale Twitter[49] and Toby Fox's Bluesky[50] on November 25, 2024. It was fully patched on December 9, 2024.[51]
  • PROGRESS UPDATE: Features the Annoying Dog in a block of ice, similar to what can occur to Berdly in the Chapter 2's Weird Route. Chapter 4 and 5 feature holiday decorations.
    • Chapter 3: Professional testing for Chapter 3 was done on PC. He shares a review segment. The tester enjoys finding the small details. There is criticism for the lack of SAVE points during longer sections, however, these were also mentioned as enjoyable. Toby confirms this is true for one portion, though it is also "rumored to be fun..."[52] Chapter 3's excerpt is a bug report about a potential typo in the Japanese version, which was intentional and resembles writing for ICE-E's P"E"ZZA. The featured image is Susie sleeping in her Dark World attire, similar to her teased pose from /blink/, one of Spamton Sweepstakes's prize links.
    • Chapter 4: Japanese translation went through its first pass. Here, the newsletter features English and Japanese dialogue screenshots, including Berdly asking someone (seemingly Kris) to go to the festival with him. Toby states PC testing will begin, then console testing afterwards.
    • Chapter 5: While some team members focused on bugfixes for Chapter 1, 2, and 3, Chapter 5's progress is steady thanks to the recently hired people. No further information was revealed.

Collaborations

  • "Theatore Creatore", a new song in collaboration with Camellia for Sega's rhythm game, Chunithm. This song is for a theatermaster, who is actually a "God of Chaos" in the game. Toby states that he created some of the melodies, and Camellia did "all of the hard work". The reference song Sega sent to Toby as an example was Deltarune's THE WORLD REVOLVING.

Merchandise

A new merchandise set by Fangamer for both Undertale and Deltarune.

In particular, Toby focuses on these two in the newsletter:

  • Important Person's Shirt: Toby describes this as making the purchaser "look more like someone with an important connection" to them. This is the first merchandise to be featured in both Undertale and Deltarune on Fangamer.
  • Seam Plush, from Deltarune. Toby was informed that many people wanted a plush of Seam. He included a staff as part of their plush design. Additionally, Toby acknowledges that the plush does not have a tail.[53]

The image in the newsletter features the following merchandise, which are all Undertale themed, from top left, then right:

Snow

Snowman overworld Newsletter.png
A snowman that leads to a letter made by Noelle.

This /snowman/ URL can be found by clicking the snowman sprite at the bottom of the newsletter. It appears to be a letter from a young Noelle, where she reminisces about making snow angels with everyone, including Kris and her sister. She would always have the biggest wings during these snow angel contests. This note also includes a quote from her sister, Dess.

When it snows,
Me and my sister and everyone have a contest
To make the biggest snow angel of all.
We lie on the ground and spread out our arms
And wave them until we get a shape just like us.
I'm the smallest
Even smaller than Kris
But I don’t lose.
Because, after we stand up to look
Dess always tells me,
"Hey, look, Elly! Yours has more hidden underneath!"
And pushes away all the snow I couldn't reach
So I have the biggest wings of all.

I wish it could snow

whenever I wanted.

DELTARUNE CHAPTERS 1-4 RELEASE TIME ANNOUNCEMENT

Sent out on May 8th, 2025.

Deltarune Chapters 1 through 4 are revealed to be released at Midnight on June 5th in local time for Switch 2, the day of the console's release, and Midnight JST, on all other platforms, meaning June 4th in most time zones.

It was also revealed that the PlayStation and Switch versions of the game will release in a cross-buy bundle, meaning PlayStation users receive both the PS4 and PS5 versions with one purchase, and the same for Switch and Switch 2 players.

Additionally, a picture depicting PlayStation trophies is in the newsletter, with it noted that some conditions can cause them to be missed.

Spamton Sweepstakes

Silence, the alternate ending for the Spamton Sweepstakes has been released. Toby suggests taking a look at the rest of the website. He also states that he only considers in-game as "canon", and that there is "nothing critically important" on the site.[58] This is alluding to the fourteen Silence links, which was added along with the /silence/ page.

Social Media

To build up towards Deltarune, Toby states he will be posting more on his Bluesky and Twitter accounts, and that the team will be posting more on the official Undertale Bluesky and Twitter accounts.

DELTARUNE CHAPTERS 3+4 RELEASE NEWSLETTER

Rock Video artwork Temmie Chang.png
Susie, Kris and Ralsei during the Rock Video, artwork by Temmie Chang.

Added on Toby's Fangamer Newsletter page on June 3, 2025.

It is the first Newsletter to not initially be sent as an email, as the email version was sent the next day. It was first shared on Toby Fox's Twitter[59] and the official UNDERTALE/DELTARUNE Bluesky[60] accounts.

In this short Newsletter, it has suggestions to avoid spoilers for Deltarune's Chapter 3 and 4. This includes avoiding social media and video websites. Toby also suggests that social media posters should try to be mindful of followers who do not want to be spoiled.

At the end is a thank you post from Toby Fox. He expresses his gratitude, and that he will continue to make the game as he enjoys sharing it, and wishes that the readers will have a good time.[61]

Deltarune News

Toby reminds that Chapter 3 and 4's soundtrack will be available on his Bandcamp and on Steam. He still recommends purchasing the soundtrack on Steam, as he considers it a good deal. Toby also warns that the track names are spoilers, and suggests that it should be read after completing Deltarune.[62]

Toby acknowledges that bugs may occur, and asks readers to email if any errors occur.[63] He states that the deltarune.com's FAQ page will be periodically updated in the upcoming weeks to list known issues.

In a later section, Toby admits that a last-minute change occurred, and specified that the Nintendo versions of Deltarune may be slightly delayed on receiving patches. This includes a "Buble" speech bubble that could appear in Chapter 4, which was listed on the official FAQ page until July 8, 2025.

UNDERTALE DELTARUNE NEWSLETTER FALL 2025

Newsletter artwork 10th Anniversary.png
The protagonist and Papyrus celebrating, saying '10!' and '10?' respectively.

Added on Toby's Fangamer Newsletter page on September 14, 2025.

It is the second newsletter not initially sent as an email, and was vaguely mentioned via Toby's social media.[4] The email version was sent out on September 15, 2025.

In this Newsletter, Toby informs that the Undertale's 10th Anniversary will be celebrated as a two-day stream event, which he describes as being similar to the stream for Deltarune's Chapter 1. It begins on a weekend at 4PM from September 20-21, and can be watched on the official Undertale website. He comments that the practice runthrough took 8 hours to play through.

Deltarune News

Toby acknowledges Chapter 3 and 4's release, but he does not have time to discuss his thoughts in the Newsletter.

Thus, Chapter 5's progress is the focus. Toby admits he has little to share, though in the Newsletter, he spoils an optional Castle Town cutscene featuring the Mikes.

Chapter 5's development progress includes:

  • Early areas are complete, but needs polish.
  • Most cutscenes are in a "first draft state".
  • Most enemies are done. One programmer is already working on "regular enemy bullet patterns" for Chapter 6.
  • Many boss attacks are finished.

Toby also provided a timeline for Chapter 5, though it is currently in the "MAKING GAME" phase. He also admits that the game is not likely to be released on the first half of 2026.[64]

Collaborations

  • TOBY FOX VOICE ACTING FOR HOMESTUCK!?: Toby details his past with Homestuck, the webcomic.

Toby explains he originally had "no aspirations for music composing" until he discovered it and wanted to become part of the music team. When he was accepted, he made many songs for Homestuck, and used many motifs. The webcomic's fame lead to him gaining a following on social media, which benefitted the Undertale Kickstarter. Toby also admits that he initially reached out to Temmie due to one of her Homestuck fanart pieces on Tumblr.

Toby further details when he was approached on helping with the Homestuck animation, he felt obligated to assist, even if it was for voice acting. He also mentions in the studio, he met Richard Steven Horvitz, the voice director, who is known for voicing characters such as Invader Zim. At the end is a link to the Homestuck animated pilot.

  • OFF MUSIC!: Toby explains that Fangamer developed an alternate version of the OFF game for the Nintendo Switch and Steam, and that the game was inspirations for the designs of Sans and Papyrus.

While ACC, the original musician did not want his music in the remake, Mortis Ghost asked Toby to make music for it instead. In the Newsletter, Toby shares a download link of all the he composed for the game as a .zip file, and shares the YouTube playlist.

Merchandise

Toby reveals two new albums:

On Fangamer: The screenshot and URL featured is Tenna, from Deltarune. The following merchandise is shown:

In the Japanese version of the newsletter, this entire section is different, as two of these products are not available on the Japanese version of Fangamer, and inputting "Tenna" or "テナ" into the search engine only produces a result for the Mr. Tenna Figurine. Instead, the screenshot is replaced with a stretched-out image of the Mr. Tenna Figurine, with a caption reading "マイクくん!ワタシを買って!だれか買って!?", roughly translating to "Mike! Buy me! Won't somebody buy me!?"[65]

UNDERTALE/DELTARUNE NEWSLETTER WINTER 2025

Tenna overworld gift Newsletter.png
Tenna holding a gift.

Added on Toby's Fangamer page on December 18, 2025.

Toby takes advantage of this newsletter to share a new development status for Deltarune Chapter 5.

It also contains a second scene from the optional Castle Town cutscene featuring the Mikes, following on from the one shared in the previous newsletter if Tenna was recruited,[66] as well as the new shop music played for most merchants, Toby stating that "this is the only song that doesn't spoil something".[67]

Towards the end of the newsletter, Toby mentions that Deltarune is getting its first sale, with 20% off during the Steam Winter Sale, and will also be discounted on consoles in the coming days. That said, he assumes that "all of the people reading the newsletter already bought the game".[68]

Deltarune News

Toby reports that development of Chapter 5 is progressing very well and that the Japanese localization process has begun. He also states that the console porting process should begin in January 2026, maintains that the game will be released within months of this newsletter being sent out, and that much of the development team will already be focused working on Chapter 6 upon the release of Chapter 5.[69]

Chapter 5's development progress includes:

  • All rooms are done, but the backgrounds of some of them needs polish.
  • All cutscenes are done, but less than 10 of them needs visual polish.
  • Most of the battles are done, but the unfinished ones still need tweaking in terms of pacing and bullet patterns.

Collaborations

SQUARE ENIX COLLAB, a music and merchandising collaboration, previously announced on November 21, 2025 on Square Enix's Twitter[70] and Bluesky [71] accounts. Toby mentions it in the newsletter, explaining that it currently consists of music albums and T-shirts, and that Temmie Chang contributed to some of the designs.[72] He then presents the Sans and Chocobo Tee and Annoying Dog and Emil Tee, as well as the piano arrangement album Echoes Beneath, produced by Yoko Shimomura, who also helped arranging MEGALOVANIA.

Interviews

CHAPTER 3 and 4 LOOK BACK!, in which Toby presents various sketches and development material for Deltarune Chapters 3 and 4, as well as some of its developers.

Creation and development

The concept art for sprites is often created by Toby.[73] Movement programming for sprites in the Newsletters was done by Fred Wood.[74]

  64. Factoring the localization and testing... I don't think that the game will be released in the first half of 2026.

... That's not a surprise, right? From last time's updates, you guys have access to exactly how long each step of the development took.

Anyway, we don't have any external factors surrounding the release date this time. We'll release it when it's done, and we will continue to update you guys on the progress of its completion. Thanks!

  66. It has nothing to do with winter, but let's share another video from DELTARUNE Chapter 5's Castle Town.

It's a continuation from last time. You need to have Tenna in your town to see this one...

Of course, this is a spoiler if you haven't completed Chapter 3 and 4 yet.

  67. I looked through the soundtrack, and this is the only song that doesn't spoil something.

Most of the remaining shopkeepers in the game use this music.

  68. One last thing! DELTARUNE is 20% OFF for the Steam Winter Sale!

It'll be on sale on console platforms as well in the coming days, so please keep an eye out.

... I'm pretty sure all of the people reading the newsletter already bought the game though, right?

  69. Progress is going excellently!

We have begun the localization process! We extracted the text from the game... 8-4 and I annotated all of the text with notes for the translator.

After localization reaches its final stages, we will begin testing with a professional testing team.

We also need to examine how the game operates on consoles. We will start considering that in January.

If I had to give a realistic estimate, I believe that it will take several months to release the game from where we are now.

It feels crazy to say this even though only 6 months ago you guys only had Chapters 1 and 2, but in a few months, much of the team will probably already be focusing their attention on Chapter 6...
