Ballet Shoes

The Ballet Shoes (JP: バレエシューズ) are a weapon found in Waterfall. Its defensive counterpart is the Old Tutu.

This item can be found in the glowing water area of Waterfall, seen just after an area where Sans with his telescope, Loren, and the Nice Cream guy are located. If the bridge to the left of this area is traversed, a small area with a bush in the center can be found.

The Ballet Shoes are located in the bush. If befriended and called with the Cell Phone, Undyne mentions that "There's normally a pair of old shoes in that seagrass." She then encourages the protagonist to take them, as "Whoever wore them isn't coming back!"

Attacking

When attacking a monster with the Ballet Shoes, three bars slide across the attack meter from the left, requiring three attack confirmations. The bars disappear shortly after passing the center of the meter. Hitting a bar exactly in the center causes it to flash gold while missing a bar causes it to flash red.

When confirming the attack, the animation depicts the bottom of a shoe, as though the protagonist kicks when using the item, accompanied by a clapping sound effect. Hitting at least two bars in the center with the other one close by causes the attack animation to appear golden, which increases damage.

Creation and development

The Ballet Shoes were listed as a "foot"-type weapon during UNDERTALE's 10th Anniversary Stream. In the Update #26 on the Undertale Kickstarter, they are listed with the flavor text "If you time perfectly, you'll get a "Critical Hit" and deal extra damage. But it's extremely difficult.".

Trivia

• Because the Ballet Shoes are covered by tall grass, their overworld sprite goes unused.
• There is unused Echo Flower dialogue in the room where the Ballet Shoes are found: "I can't run any longer... Somebody, anybody..."
