Empty Gun

The Empty Gun (JP: からっぽのピストル) is a weapon sold by Bratty and Catty for 350G, who reside in the right alleyway at the MTT Resort. Its defensive counterpart is the Cowboy Hat. According to Bratty and Catty, it was found (along with their other wares) in Waterfall at the garbage dump, explaining its empty cylinder. Like other items sold by Bratty and Catty, it is free on the Genocide Route.

Attacking

When attacking a monster with the Empty Gun, four bars slide across the attack meter from the left, requiring four attack confirmations. The bars disappear shortly after passing the center of the meter. Hitting a bar exactly in the center causes it to flash gold while missing a bar causes it to flash red.

When confirming the attack, the animation depicts a big star, which explodes into a series of "gunshot" circles with eight stars spinning counter-clockwise outside of the circle. Hitting at least two bars in the center with the other two close by causes the attack animation to appear golden, which greatly increases damage. Hitting all four bars in the center doubles the damage that would have been dealt had one of the bars barely missed. The Empty Gun, along with Burnt Pan, can give incredibly high damage if the player is consistent.

The Empty Gun requires much precision to use, as the bars move more quickly than other weapons, and it deals considerably less damage if the four bars are not hit near the center.

Trivia

• The stars during the attack animation look like the stars serving as SAVE Points in the overworld. An interpretation of the attack animation suggests the conjecture that the protagonist can use their determination as harmful projectiles to substitute the lack of bullets.
• As shown during UNDERTALE's 10th Anniversary Stream, the Empty Gun was originally called the "Magic Gun". It was also listed as a "gun"-type weapon.
