Policy
This page documents the various Undertale Wiki policies. They exist to define a what is acceptable and what is not acceptable in terms of behaviors and contributions, make wiki users feel safe and welcome to contribute, make readers find the content they needed more easily, and allow the wiki to fulfill its purpose of being the most comprehensive and reliable encyclopedia on Undertale.
The following policies describe rules that Undertale Wiki users must follow at all times while interacting with the wiki, either by editing or communicating with other users. They are not an exhaustive list of rules, in order to prevent gaming the system and allow reasonable discretion during their enforcement. To report a violation of these rules, please write on the talk page of one of the administrators.
These rules define acceptable behaviors when interacting with other wiki users. They can be viewed over at Undertale/Deltarune Wiki Discussions.
These rules define what consists an acceptable wiki contribution. Most of them will not get a user immediately blocked, if it's clear that they are editing in good faith. However, they are important when determining whether edits stay or not.
- Do not deface wiki content, for personal amusement or any other reason. If you are clearly not editing to contribute to the wiki, you may be immediately blocked.
- Maintain a neutral point of view. Personal headcanons are not allowed on the wiki. The content you add should have strong basis in what is shown in the game, or in an otherwise canonical context.
- This wiki documents the canonical game. Documenting the fandom, its interpretations, fan projects, AUs, and similar, is out of scope for this wiki. This includes file uploads for files unrelated to the game and not used in wiki content.
- Speculative content is allowed only when thoroughly backed by facts. If something seems far-fetched, don't add it to the wiki.
- Do not edit war. If you disagree with someone's undo reason, talk it out on that article's talk page, or on their talk page. If a conflict resolution has not been reached, contact a staff member to help resolve it.
- Pages should only exist if their topics are noteworthy enough. If the topic's standalone article is not long enough, it will be merged with another related article, and a redirect may be created. This also applies to categories, templates and such.
- Trivia is fine, but content that is too trivial is clutter. When adding a piece of information, first check if it's mentioned elsewhere, and try to incorporate into the article's main body. If the piece of information seems too obvious given the information that the article already provides, don't add it.
- The wiki should strive for consistency. Make sure to read the relevant standards and check out how something is written on other articles before attempting to change terminology, punctuation, capitalization, etc. en masse.
By using Undertale Wiki, users also agree to the Terms of Service, which is a separate set of rules that mandates acceptable uses of all the websites in Undertale Wiki's network. Violating these terms may result in account termination on all wikis in the network. Specifically, the Terms of Service cover rules such as:
- You must be 13 years of age, or of legal age that data protection and other laws in your country mandate.
- Do not post illegal or copyright infringing content.
- Do not use alternative accounts to circumvent a block. In general, it is best to stick to one account, and notify the staff if you intend to use another.
The following policies describe written standards for Undertale Wiki content, written and agreed upon by the community. If your contributions don't follow these standards, they are likely to be removed. However, unless you keep making the same changes over and over, violating these standards is not going to end with a block.
- Manual of Style defines the terminology, punctuation, formatting and similar content-related sources of inconsistency that might arise. It ensures general consistency in how wiki content is written, to prevent any future conflicts about how to write a piece of wiki content.
- Page Organization Guide defines the general organization of articles, sections that should be used, and their content. It ensures that all articles are consistently structured, so that wiki readers don't get confused when two articles about the same type of content look completely differently.
Violation of these rules may be met with a block. Depending on the severity of the violation, the user's history, or any repeated violations, the following types of block are possible:
- Block from editing a subset of pages on a wiki
- Block from editing a wiki
- Block from posting in Discussions
- Block from logging into Discussions
- Block from editing all wikis on the network
Each of the blocks can be temporary or permanent.
If you have been blocked, you are allowed to appeal the block by messaging the staff over Discussions or Discord to review the block. If you are given "no" as an answer, you must respect this decision to prevent conflict escalation and further action being taken on your account.
