I've seen a few people theorizing that Entry Number Seventeen was Gaster creating a Dark Fountain, and they usually point to the lines
DARK DARKER YET DARKER
THE DARKNESS KEEPS GROWING
and
THE SHADOWS CUTTING DEEPER.
These make sense, but there's another line that supports this theory I haven't heard brought up.

As my limited understanding of science tells me, photons are light particles.

It's hardly a theory. We already know Entry Number Seventeen relates to Deltarune due to how deltarune.com quoted Entry Number Seventeen years before Deltarune came out. And once the Deltarune connection is established, we don't have to look into it too much into it in order to arrive at capital 'D' Darkness.
Actually, I think he was experimenting with a combination of The Barrier and Determination/ attempting to create an artificial human-monster soul combination, another possible theory on how he disappeared, through destroying his own soul.
I do believe the fact Gaster invented the DT extractor is significant to his backstory, though. Personally, I think he injected himself with a controlled dose of determination to create a dark fountain, but fell into the darkness.
Wing made the design for the DT extractor, but Alyphs was the one who actually physically built it.
"Using the blueprints, I've done it..." or some variation thereof.
Wing's work seems to have been in timelines, as Sans frequently references these in situations such as his fight.

I do actually believe the determination research is relevant to Gaster's involvement with Deltarune, though. I think he needed determination so he could open a dark fountain.
