It has come to my attention that these wikis seem to have a habit of using “voicebyte” to refer to the text sounds that play as characters speak. This is not a word. I don’t understand how it ended up here.
After attempting to remove “voicebyte”, I was told that this is “a term used on this wiki” for the sake of being “less clunky”, but…how is it any less clunky than say, “text sound”, which is the exact same number of syllables? And while I’m arguing against it then I also must bring up that the “byte” in “voicebyte” is evidently not even a correct usage of the word “byte”. It’s like someone misremembered the term “sound bite” and wrote it down everywhere. I don’t understand why the wiki is arbitrarily using a made up word when simple phrases like “text sound” can be immediately understood by the reader, are no more difficult to read or write than “voicebyte”, and are actually real words. I feel like I’m being pranked.
This is a good question! I had to ask about it because I compared it to “monsterkind,” but even though “monsterkind” is not a real word, that particular word is likely fine anyways.
Yeah, I think that would be fine! I just felt like it was really weird for the wiki to use a made up word with no origin in the games for no apparent reason, especially one that just to me looks like it’s a mistake of a different term…I think anything would be better really as long as it makes more sense.
“Soundbyte” is a misspelling of “soundbite”, so I suppose that makes sense to change. Though, it is a misspelling with almost as much precedent as the actual original spelling, so its kinda dubious. As for “voicebite”, I suppose a more proper way to phrase it would be “voice soundbite” and it’s just a shortening. The assets in the game are named as “snd_txt” (such as “snd_txtsans” for Sans’s talk sound) so I suppose the most “official” term might be “text sound”.
@Self-ProclaimedNonFan If you’re not looking to contribute to the discussion, it would be better if you don’t post instead of throwing personal insults.
Pretty reasonable! Also I’ve found out why you had difficulty with finding a proper term for this: it’s because there doesn’t really seem to be one. I did see “dialogue sound” be used for some tutorials, and over on Nookipedia, it’s called “Animalese” for the sound effect…
no, its a ones, and its usually used to catagorize small or larger groups of binary (Theres also Megabyte, kilobyte, Etc.) I think. I'm still learning though, so correct me if I'm wrong
