You're talking about the background of THE HOLY appearing in the background of Ever Higher? It's a really simple sequence of notes. I think it's just coincidence.
In fact, every time I listen to them, they sound more different from each other.
It was more than enough to qualify SWORD as having it. idk, it seems rather intentional to me, as toby hasn't really used similar arpeggios elsewhere.

I thought you were talking about the background of THE HOLY (the part that plays through the entire track and fluctuates in volume). I thought this is what you were hearing in the background of Ever Higher.
The melody that plays in SWORD (1:19 to 1:32) is another part of THE HOLY (0:20 to 0:34). This part is more complex and distinct.
Hearing it again, I'm not so sure if SWORD even has THE HOLY anymore.
As far as I can tell these are just arpeggiated chords and don't seem to reference THE HOLY. I'll ask for a second opinion though.
Kocka and F-sharp say that the melody is too indistinct to even be considered a motif, so we probably shouldn't include SWORD nor Ever Higher.

honestly i'm not sure we're talking about the same thing lmao. im talking about how by the end of both SWORD and Ever Higher, there's a motif shared with THE HOLY that's eighth notes one halftone apart. in SWORD it even fades out like it does in THE HOLY. I am NOT talking about the lead of SWORD, I am talking about the first thing you hear when you listen to THE HOLY

okay I know this debate is settled but the motif is BACK in the anniversary Abandoned Town and it even has the soundfont to boot. i PROMISE you this is intentional
