Orange is not a shade of red. A shade, by definition, is defined by the amount of black or white mixed with a colour. A shade of red would be pink, as it is red mixed with extra white. Orange is red mixed with yellow. Orange is a shade of orange.

Color is a spectrum. There are infinitely many colors, forming a gradient that occupies a portion of the electromagnetic spectrum (and also a portion outside of the electromagnetic spectrum, but that's not important right now). However, most people find it unreasonable to have infinite names for colors, so we compromise.

The compromise is to group similar colors together, and use the same name to refer to all colors in the same group. For example, we create a group called BLUE, which includes the pure platonic BLUE and also any colors which are sufficiently close to BLUE. "Sufficiently close" includes versions of it that are lighter, darker, or mixed with small amounts of other colors.

There is no non-arbitrary system to divide the color spectrum into groups. My personal favorite utilizes the fact that (most) humans observe color as a mixture of RED, GREEN, and BLUE. I define each group as colors created by mixing either 'the maximum amount' or 'none at all' of each primary color:

  • BLACK has none of them.
  • RED has RED.
  • GREEN has GREEN.
  • BLUE has BLUE.
  • CYAN has GREEN and BLUE.
  • MAGENTA has RED and BLUE.
  • YELLOW has RED and GREEN.
  • WHITE has RED, GREEN, and BLUE.

These are, in my opinion, non-negotiable. Each one of those is it's own color, and not just an alternate version of another color. This means CYAN is it's own color independent from BLUE.

Notably, this does not include ORANGE, PURPLE, and GRAY. If you want these to be included, you need to expand the color vocabulary into LV2: in addition to 'the maximum amount' and 'none at all', we also allow 'half much'.

The new groups would include:

  • All colors included in LV1: BLACK, RED, GREEN, BLUE, CYAN, MAGENTA, YELLOW, and WHITE.
  • Light and dark versions of the colors in LV1: LIGHT RED, DARK RED, LIGHT GREEN, DARK GREEN, LIGHT BLUE, DARK BLUE, LIGHT CYAN, DARK CYAN, LIGHT MAGENTA, DARK MAGENTA, LIGHT YELLOW, DARK YELLOW, and GRAY.
  • REDDISH MAGENTA, a.k.a ROSE.
  • REDDISH YELLOW, a.k.a ORANGE.
  • GREENISH CYAN, a.k.a TEAL.
  • GREENISH YELLOW, a.k.a CHARTREUSE.
  • BLUISH CYAN, a.k.a AZURE.
  • BLUISH MAGENTA, a.k.a PURPLE.

This means if you want ORANGE and PURPLE to be their own independent colors, you also need to include TEAL, CHARTREUSE, and the others. If ORANGE isn't YELLOW, then CHARTREUSE isn't GREEN.

However, whether or not you accept these LV2 colors, CYAN is still it's own color independent from BLUE. If you're mixing light, BLUE is a primary color, while CYAN is a secondary color. If you're mixing paint, CYAN is a primary color, while BLUE is a secondary color. So they can't possibly be the same color.
