I'm calling an edit dispute regarding Ralsei's pronouns.
(Yes I know, me, Galacta, editing. A shocker.)
Currently, Ralsei's pronouns are listed as
He/Him (Primarily)
They/Them ("Dark Vine" title)
This is, however, a notable outlier on the Deltarune wiki. No other character with multiple pronouns has parentheses specifying where they're stated. Take Cowboy Hat Mike for example. "Him" is only used for them one, and yet it's listed as a normal pronoun.
Furthermore, the title isn't the only thing that calls Ralsei "they". Asgore, when you're about to seal the first fountain, exclusively calls Ralsei "they".
Therefore, I believe the parentheses should be removed from Ralsei's page. Mainly for consistency with other pages.
As discussed in the previous Ralsei's pronouns thread, these parentheticals were added to make the circumstances surrounding the they/them clear to the reader (for some specific posts, see 5774/71 and 5774/72; the specifier was supported by others in 5774/90, 5774/91, and 5774/94).
Regarding the consistency aspect, I don't think that anyone had objections to adding parenthetical specifiers to other characters referred to with multiple pronouns—it's just that it isn't a high priority, and no one has gotten around to doing it.
This dialogue has been brought up again and again and again, enough that there's now an editor note that explicitly states that it should not be added. Consensus is that "Character A uses they/them for Character B as an indication of Character A's unfamiliarity with Character B" is a common pattern in Deltarune's dialogue (e.g., Undyne for Alphys, Lancer for Noelle, Toriel for Susie), and that those should not be used as pronoun references.
theres stuff like starwalker saying "no i dont know why they flew away" when just one member of the trashy trio disappear, which would make any of their pronouns "they/them". this counts as a reference/citation but its the only time any of them are referred to as such, so the parentheses are helpful.
They/them can really be used for any character in English, that's how the language works. I think a lot of people forget that they/them being gender netural also means it can be used simply because gender isn't important. It isn't always indicative of the character's identity.
When it is used exclusively or excessively for a character, then it does imply and enforce it as an actual identifier (like with Kris), but the occasional use for other characters is just natural conversational English in most cases and isn't really indicative of an identity or chosen pronouns.
Otherwise we're gonna end up putting "they" on every single character at some point, which kind of defeats the purpose, I think?
As a rule of thumb, we shouldn't count pronouns in strings that can refer to multiple characters interchangeably. Otherwise, literally every enemy before Chapter 5 would have “it” as a listed pronoun.
