I am looking to replay chap4 for a save file for 5. But to do so I will need to erase and restart a save with the chap4 shadow crystals gotten. What will happen? Will I just be able to re-fight Gerson and re-collect it? Will this affect how the game/Seam views my completion in any way? I am fully aware that this is kinda a silly question but I can't stop thinking about it.

I'm also asking because I know the game tracks your shadow crystals on the chapter select menu.
Also, I know the game dose not fully delete erased saves. When I got chaps3and4 for the first time and had my data carry over, It showed completion files for saves I deleted years ago. I was able to fix this by just re-playing the chap2 ending on my most recent files but It has made me extremely paranoid ever since. (To clarify: I played chaps1and2 on switch and played 3and4 on switch 2, If that affected anything)
That just means you never watched the credits from ch. 1 &2 again, as that’s what creates the completion files
I never realized that but yeah that's most likely what happened. I would just save in castle town and close the game so I never made another completion file.
this is because, internally, the completion data is completely seperate from the actual save
filech4_0 is the top save slot for chapter 4.
the corresponding completion data is filech4_3.
deleting a save slot only deletes the actual save (filech4_0), and not the corresponding completion data (filech4_3)
this is specifically completion data jank. i don't even think it's on purpose!
