I always like to hold on to the glowshards and dog dollars... I don't know why, but I feel like they might be important.

exactly, although most of them go into my storage
I held on to my Glow Shards until Chapter 3. The fact that you can get an indefinite amount of them from the Ball Machine makes them feel less special, so I sold them.
I still have the Dog Dollars, though.
