I think it's kind of funny how most people think the Dess stuff happened primarily in the Shelter/bunker when there's a ton of 'keep out' police tape that is continually getting renewed over the courses of chapters, especially with the context that Asgore (who was a cop) got punted from the force over whatever happened?
Even if you think the police tape is related to something else... isn't it weird that it exists at all? Like what's up with that.

I suppose, but I do feel like if you didn't want to accidentally indicate some foul play to the left of town, you'd choose a different thing to block the way, or at least indicate the tape was over road work or something?
with how the town is layed out it's also Directly Below the holiday mansion, and Above the graveyard, which we know from Noelle's dialogue Asriel, Kris, December, and Noelle all messed around in the woods nearby at least once.

Police tape is also used for scenes of accidents and murders for crime scene preservation. In fact, from my experience that's usually what people mean by 'police tape' instead of barricade tape, but that might just be my experience.

the thing is we don't know why the tape is up within this context either. which is weird and suspicious when we continue to not even have a 'oh lol yeah a sinkhole opened' thing or anything.

with how tied into That Horrible Day the cops are, and how tied in they are to the bunker/shelter mystery, it's worth discussing, especially when there's a point to update the text to say that they put new tape down after the rain.
maybe there's just something dangerous outside town that's always been there?
in places that have dangerous spots that have 'always been there', like quicksand, areas that are prone to having landslides if you're not careful, or the like, quarries where people have died, the bolton strid, etc, there's more permanent signs than a bunch of police tape that has to get replaced any time it rains though. I've lived in areas where there have been geological/water features where people have ate shit and died horribly, there will be permanent signs in place generally.

that's my point! everyone is assuming dess dessappeard in the bunker when there's police tape that is getting replaced, asgore got exploded over something that happened that day, etc.

Can you please elaborate? I am not following, because the only way this makes sense to my brain with the topic is you positing there is a second lake that dess disappeared into, and I admit I'd be a little baffled by that as a thesis on its own with no additional details.

Wouldn't that make what specifically happened in on the horrible day that Asgore mentions even more opaque, and would still not explain the police tape, or why there's a weird route violent splorch with bright red in relation to That Day?

The police tape area is pretty close to the woods behind the graveyard Noelle mentions her and Kris and Azzy and Dess exploring and not finding stuff in, and basically exists between the graveyard and funny holiday manor, which gets another eyebrow raise from me.
