A deathly silence fell that seemed to choke the air. The only noises to be heard were Undyne’s heavy breathing, and the human’s blood slowly dripping onto the unsteady bridge. Undyne remembered the soul that the human possessed and reached into the human’s corpse, ripping the soul out and clutched it in her blood soaked glove. “Be gone, you trash,” Undyne said before hurling the ravaged corpse off of the bridge and into the chasm below. Undyne then walked off, not even taking the time to wait and hear the wet thud of the human’s remains hitting the ground far below.
As soon as the bridge was out of view for Undyne, a skeleton teleported a few feet in front of her. “heya undyne, how was your ‘epic showdown for the fate of the world’? you looked like you were having the time of your life.”
“‘Fun’ isn’t exactly how I’d describe it. But it was certainly action packed”
“you can say that again. oh, before i forget, what happened to the human? i missed the last part.”
Undyne smiled and said “The human is dead, Sans. I impaled them with multiple spears before throwing their corpse off of the bridge. I can safely say that your brother, along with all of the others slain by that monstrosity, have been avenged.
An awkward silence settled over the conversation, and Undyne realized that she shouldn’t have brought up Papyrus.
“well thanks for taking care of it, i was getting worried that i’d have to deal with them myself. anyway, we need to tell asgore about the human’s death then decide what to do next.” After Undyne nodded her head in agreement, Sans continued. “let’s take a shortcut since this is important.” Undyne nodded again.
One shortcut later, they were in the throne room with Asgore, who was currently watering the golden flowers that had overtaken the room. Asgore noticed the pair, and after putting down the watering can, he spoke. “Ah, so you both have finally arrived, how is the human faring in their little quest?”
“They died by my hand, their corpse rests in a chasm, which is where it belongs.”
”How sad, I was hoping to talk things out with them… Anyway, I have a favor to ask both of you. My wife left me a while ago and I don’t know where she is, and even though she probably still hates me, I’m still worried about her. Can you both find her for me?”
Sans paused for a moment, then nodded and said “yeah, i’ll keep an eye socket out for her.” Undyne also nodded.
”Good,” Asgore said, “Oh right, Undyne, you have the human’s soul right? That means we have enough to shatter the barrier to the human realm. Can you please give it to me?”
Undyne started to, but faltered, deep in thought. “… no.”
This obviously confused Asgore. “Why are you refusing? If this is a joke, please stop it now.”
Undyne clenched a bloody fist before saying “I meant what I said Asgore, I’m not going to give you the soul. What if there are more humans that turn out to be just like the one that devastated half the Underground? What if they’re even more powerful? Sure the humans might all be good people, and the one that fell here was just an anomaly, but I’m not willing to risk the safety of everyone left in the Underground after that massacre on just hopes and dreams. Sans, you know probably better than anyone how heartless humans can be, they murdered Papyrus without the slightest bit of mercy, when all your brother was trying to do was make them a better person. You probably saw the whole thing, didn’t you? So why should we go up to the surface when we’ll probably all die if we do? The answer is that we shouldn’t, Asgore, I’m putting my foot down.” Undyne stomped the ground, the noise echoed throughout the throne room despite being slightly muffled by the flowers.
“i agree with Undyne on this, asgore. I don’t want to lose anyone else, and neither do you, so i think it’s best if we just stay down here and fortify ourselves in case another freak comes through okay?”
Asgore lowered his head, letting shadows obscure his eyes as he summoned his crimson trident. “You will give me the soul, Undyne. Even though you might have gotten stronger from the fight with that human, I can still pry that soul out of your bloody hands, and I will if I have to.” Asgore’s voice resonated with a chill that seemed to freeze the room.
At this, Sans decided to abandon his offensive position and mediate. “Woah hey guys, let’s back it up a bit. we’re already low on monsters with good combat capabilities, so neither of you should want to get hurt anytime soon in case something terrible happens again.”
“That doesn’t change the fact that everyone in the Underground has been waiting for decades or more to shatter the barrier and get to the surface, and Undyne is denying us the salvation we are this close to achieving.”
Sans sighed and said “asgore, i have to show you something. will you both please get over here? i’m about to use a shortcut.” After Undyne and Asgore both obliged, all three monsters disappeared into thin air.
One shortcut later, the three shortcutees found themselves on a wide path driving strai a light forest of pine trees. Snow blanketed the ground everywhere, but nobody felt cold for some reason. It was Asgore that first noticed the door in front of them, and he quickly asked about it. “Why did you take us here, Sans?”
Sans ignored the question and said “undyne, can you open the door with your spears, please?”
Undyne nodded and said “Sure thing, Sans. But I don’t know where you’re going with this, though.”
After they blasted through the door, they walked through the long hallway, marveling at it. When they reached the end of the hallway, Asgore finally spoke. “Woof, this place is ancient, there’s so much dust.” Sans forged ahead, not saying a word. After going through the long hallways, the trio went up the stairs and Asgore gasped when he realized they were in a house. The trio walked around the house, while Undyne was amazed and Sans wore his signature smile, Asgore became more and more depressed with every room they entered. Finally, when they entered the second bedroom, Asgore took one look around and dropped to one knee, sobbing. He looked at Sans and said in a quiet voice. “Correct me if I’m wrong, but this is where the human passed through. Right Sans?”
“i’m afraid you’re right, asgore” Sans said. Asgore stood back up and summoned his trident with a red glint in his eye.
“THE HUMANS WILL PAY. THEY WILL ALL PAY!”
“C-calm down, Asgore” Undyne said, grasping Asgore’s trident. “If you attacked all of the humans at once, they’d slaughter you and all of us!”
“Asgore glared at her and yelled “BUT THEY KILLED MY TORI, THEY MUST PAY FOR THEIR SINS!”
Now Undyne was getting angry. “WOULD YOU RISK THE LIVES OF EVERYONE ALIVE IN THE UNDERGROUND JUST TO KILL A COUPLE OF HUMANS?” Asgore looked at Undyne, who sighed and continued talking. “Look, I know how you feel. If the human had killed my partner, I would’ve sworn eternal vengeance on all humankind just like you did. But since they didn’t do that, I’m able to bring you back to your senses.” Undyne stopped for a moment, then continued talking. “What if we absorb the seven human souls that we have to strengthen the Underground against future humans like the one we just saw. You can give a speech about the human and your decision, and with a little luck, the other monsters might just agree with us. What do you say, Asgore?”
Asgore clenched his trident as hard as he could… …before relaxing his grip and slowly nodding, the red glow fading from his eye.
Sans let out a big sigh of relief and said “phew, that was close. I thought you were actually gonna go through and be a bonehead, asgore, no offense.” Awkward silence fell when Sans stopped talking, so he continued, if only to stop the awkwardness. “aaanyway, now that we’ve done what we came here to do, why don’t we go back to the castle and do the thing with the souls that undyne talked about.”
Undyne nodded, and Asgore stood up, the shadows lifting from his face. “Yes, that sounds like a plan.”
One shortcut and a minute of walking later, the trio was right by the barrier, with the human souls in view.
“Which one do you both want?” Asgore asked Undyne and Sans.
Undyne thought back to all of the humans that possessed the souls that were in front of her. “I want the yellow one, it’s wielder was noble in their pursuit of justice.” She then walked over to the yellow soul, smashing the glass and absorbing the soul it contained.
“Sans, what about you?”
Sans, not really giving it as much thought as Undyne did, said “eh, the light blue one was pretty cool.” He then walked over to the light blue soul, shattering the container with a bone and absorbing it.
“I guess it’s my turn.” Asgore said, before walking over to the green soul, shattering the container and absorbing the soul just like Undyne and Sans did for theirs. When he was done, Asgore turned around to face Sans and Undyne, saying “We should select monsters that we trust to absorb the remaining souls, I will get the red soul, Sans can have the purple one, and Undyne will get the blue and orange ones.”
“i only get one candidate to select? coolsies.” Sans said.
Undyne looked at Sans and said “Well let’s be off, Sans. We should probably stick together so we can pass a fairer judgement.”
Sans shrugged and said “yeah, you’re probably right” and both him and Undyne teleported away.
Once Undyne and Sans were out of the barrier room, Undyne turned to Sans and said “Something weird happened earlier, and I was hoping you might know what it means.”
Sans turned to face Undyne and said “sure thing, undyne. whaddya got for me?”
Undyne looked around before saying “When I killed the human, something informed me that my ‘LOVE increased.’ Do you know what that means, Sans?”
