On the Weapons page, the Black Shard is currently listed under Swords.
The weapon categories are already kind of nebulous, there’s no real distinction in the game’s code besides the icons.
And that’s just the thing, the Black Shard does not use the Sword icon, it has a unique one instead.
I think it would make more sense to put it in the “Other” category, but I want to know if other people agree with this before making any major edits.
I’m curious, is the icon the only reason for this?
Pretty much, yeah… it’s the only real distinction between weapons besides which characters can use them, and even that isn’t particularly consistent (like how Noelle can use the Jingle Blade since its her real world pencil).
The flavor text also points to the item physically not being a sword, but I don’t think it’s that relevant.

The wiki officially says “Swords are a weapon type that can be equipped by Kris, with some swords being able to be equipped by Noelle.” I would say this means the Black Shard is a sword because it is equippable as a weapon for Kris.
Right, but this definition is just an arbitrary one made up by the wiki, it’s not actually based on anything.
If it’s made up by the wiki, we should follow it considering we’re on the wiki.
It’s easier to categorize, and there’s no reason to make a whole new category for 1 item.
