Honest Theory on DR Ch 5 Secret Boss

Quick disclaimer: This isn't a wholly original post. I've seen pieces of this theory online, so this might end up a rehash of some other post on this wiki's Discussions tab. SPOILER WARNINGS

My honest-to-goodness theory on Deltarune Ch 5 regarding the shadow crystal is that, in the standard route playthrough, the Shadow Crystal boss will be Papyrus as a friendly sparring session (similarly to The Hammer of Justice), and in the "weird" route, Sans serves as a final boss of the chapter (akin to Spamton NEO being the final boss of Chapter 2).

There was a weird webpage on the official Deltarune website relating to the Weird Route with numbers 1 through 5 (where 2 and 3 were huge compared to the tiny 4, but 1 and 3 were invisible). The number 3 is probably in relation to the Sword route while 2 and 4 are believed to be in relation to the "Weird" route. We don't know for sure what this all means, or if it was a false lead meant to throw us off the case. (Has anyone here heard of that fake leak from the official Gravity Falls crew?) However, some people have speculated that the "Weird" route will end in Chapter 5, such that the game only has one ending.

I don't want to claim that the "Weird" route will lock players out of Chapters 6 and 7, but I can see a Sans fight happening in Chapter 5 on the "weird" route, especially if the theory that Sans & Papyrus came from the Deltarune timeline to the Undertale timeline is true.

There's a lot of stuff that's uncertain about the remaining chapters of Deltarune. I don't want to act like this theory is correct or even likely. It's just my best guess.

I’m interested. Just one question, why Sans and Papyrus?

I like mollystars' theory that the size corresponds to how much what we do in that chapter will change the narrative and the color corresponds to whether or not weird route stuff will be there. So far this has been true with chapters 3 & 4 (I have a theory about what 3 affected but I'll put that in a separate post), idk why the team would make it be false with chapter 5. I think it's weird (haha) that 6 & 7 aren't in the line up there or why Gerson doesn't talk about them and the weird route locking you could be very very interesting. Also a papyrus fight would be cool

Jumpscare, chapter five is really the end of the game on both routes

I project mid-Chapter 6, the entire chapter structure breaks down. (Alluding to how Gerson couldn’t finish Chapter 6 of his book)

There’s probably some really strange things we have to do to reach “Chapter 7”. And it will be far different than any of the chapters that came before (equivalent to how someone else has to write the ending)

We got a "Yellow Soul Mode" and "Green Soul Mode" secret boss already. While we probably won't get a "Purple Soul Mode" due to Muffet being a Kickstarter reward in the game (and therefore highly unlikely to return in Deltarune outside of that one odd armor referencing her), I fully expect a "Blue Soul Mode" secret boss fight at some point, and it just makes sense in my mind for the Sans fight to happen in the chapter where Asgore is (at least presumably) going to be taking a major part. I don't think Sans will actually fight outside of the "weird" route, so I think it just has to be Papyrus who serves as the "Blue Soul Mode" secret boss. I really don't see any other logical explanation for where the "Blue Soul Mode" can come into play (like the "Yellow Soul Mode" did in Chapter 2, or the "Green Soul Mode" did in Chapter 4) because of how mysterious "Sans & Papyrus" lore is. I also kind of expected Papyrus to be related to some sort of big reveal since Chapter 2 was being released (since the website went ahead and said Papyrus was too busy for Chapter 2).

Side note: Some music creators on YouTube have already put together unofficial soundtracks for a Papyrus secret boss battle (with some dating back a couple years).

If you ask some people, they'd say you already fought Papyrus as a Shadow Crystal Boss.

I follow the Reverse Undertale Theory and by those means if the Ch4 secret boss was Gerson who represents Undyne the Undying yes, the secret boss is going to be someone of the skelebros.
I think its more like Sans, because all previous secret bosses starting from Spamton are related to Undertale genocide counterparts, so if Spamton crawled inside the drawing of Mettaton's neo form, Gerson...well, self-explanatory, so the next boss is Sans because Papyrus' brother and stuff

I like the Undertale fan comic where someone compares the "Papyrus is the Knight" theory to the Smiling Friends episode where they find out the Earth is flat. I don't think it's necessary to compare an unlikely Deltarune theory to people who think the Earth is flat, but it cracked me up.

I actually forgot about the "Genocide bosses in reverse order" theory. I think it's also possible the Chapter 5 Secret Boss will just be Sans regardless of route. Based on the way Sans has acted in Deltarune (and the way he acts in all non-Genocide-related routes in Undertale), I just didn't see him fighting unless he had to. However, now that I'm re-evaluating it, maybe he would. Sans didn't fight until the last moment he could interfere with the Genocide Route because of the promise he made to Toriel and being afraid of the player's ability to reset, so maybe if both of those things haven't happened in the Deltarune timeline, he would interfere with the player going after Shadow Crystals. He outright tells the Undertale player he would've killed them if not for the promise to Toriel, so... Er, sorry, I'm rambling now.

I also never really heard the theory that Spamton NEO's body is a drawing by Mettaton in the light world. I guess I never really thought about it that way, but that does make a lot of sense. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

That makes me wonder…

Toby gave us what a Mettaton NEO fight could actually look like.

He gave us what Gerson in his prime could’ve done to us in Genocide Route.

Pacifist Sans and Weird Route Papyrus could be a solid way to keep the fan service going.

I saw someone had a theory that we will get an Undertale fanservice secret boss every other chapter and the papyrus/sans fight will happen in chapter 6 while the chapter 5 boss will be completely original and won't use a soul mode. I think I prefer that theory because while I like the chapter 2 & 4 fights, I also like seeing the wholly original character and their fights like jevil, the knight, john mantle.

Less of a theory and more of an all-but-confirmed near-fact for the NEO body.

I think it was stated by someone that it was a drawing, I just don't remember by whom, possibly by that one Swatch in the shop

I now even more think that Sans will be the secret boss possibly because of the whole Asgore situation where we find out some crucial lore

Though Toby likes to keep the way he introduces secret bosses unique.

If it’s gonna be Sans, he can’t just pull a Gerson again.

I sincerely and honestly believe that the chapter 5 secret boss will be the Golden Flower.
The flowers are going to be “the royal guard” of the Flower King. The shadow crystal will help the flower become the captain of the royal guard. And on the weird route they will interrupt Kris, not letting them close the fountain, just like in chapter 2 with Spamton.
Also. About the festival. On the normal route Susie and Noelle will be together on the ferris wheel, whereas on the weird one Kris and Noelle will be there. Just like that, they will go to the Dark world.
So my guess is that the Golden Flower will be the secret boss, and their attacks will be somewhat similar to Papyrus’

BUT HOW WOULD PAPYRUS AND SANS GET TO THE FLOWER SHOP DARK WORLD?

I feel like we're failing to consider that there might be multiple dark worlds in chapter 5

Oh yes, there might also be a Festival DW – while we close the flower shop DW, the knight doesn’t just sit there and aura farm

I dunno, maybe they WALK INTO THE BUILDING THAT'S LIKELY UNLOCKED TO SEE ASGORE OR BUY FLOWERS?
