I defended on this turn and the fight immediately ended with the usual violence ending, i can't seem to replicate this so i don't know what would've happened if i tried snapping wires here. I'm genuinely so confused on this and was wondering if anyone had an idea

That sounds like the displayed HP is calculated by rounding down the ratio of the current and maximum HP, so if he was left with 1 HP and his maximum is over 100 HP it would mean he's at 0.something% of the HP. Which displays as 0% HP.
This definitely isn't the case given some of his attacks deal self damage (specifically his heart attack and final attack) but always leave him at 1 HP, which correctly shows as 1%. Plus, as i said, the battle immediately ended after this without me attacking him, meaning he was actually at 0 HP
Why did you choose to kill him if he's at 99% mercy?
