Well, not FULLY sure what y'mean here, but I can give some pointers.
Firstly, a motif is a short musical idea that can repeat.
THIS IS NOT A LEITMOTIF.
A leitmotif is a motif linked to a specific idea or thing, e.g. 'sans' and its melody are linked to sans, and appear as a leitmotif in sans tracks.
This is normally enough to figure out if something is a leitmotif or not.
(It's for this very reason that I don't consider Don't Forget to be a leitmotif, only a motif.)
Now, I believe what you're mentioning is a little test I came up with, which I dub the Rainingsans test.
When a melody sounds like another melody, but on paper doesn't look anything like the base melody (e.g. the usage of 'sans' in it's raining somewhere else in contrast to the usage of 'sans' in 'sans'), then a good way to figure out if you're hallucinating is to simply think about it.
Here's a few guidelines to normally ask yourself.
- Is the melody front and center stage? If not, probably not a leitmotif.
- Does it make sense to be here? Leitmotifs are normally only meant to reinforce what is already known, and enhance the preexisting story. If the leitmotif alone somehow adds some whole new story element or relationship, then 9 times out of 10 something's gone wrong.
- Am I fully sane? Insanity and delusions often lead to mistakes when spotting leitmotifs.
So yeah, it's pretty much just common sense.
