Chapter 5 theme analysis

OK so:

You know how every chapter has it's theme? For example, how chapter 4's theme is fate and chapter 3's is nostalgia? Well, I've seen quite a few people misunderstanding chapter 5's theme, so I'm here to give what I believe it is.

Short answer: it's a flawed perception of the past.

Long answer: we all know that chapter 5 is based off of chapter 1. But, in a way, it's also the opposite of some things. Here, I'll give all my evidence to support this.

Music: both garden of hopes and dreams and the rude buster variant (idk the name) are just remixes of the og popular enough to get in the game.

Areas: in chapter 1, the cliffs (the first area in the game, I think that's what it's called) is very minor and doesn't have too much importance. In chapter 5, it is one of the 3 main areas of the entire chapter.

Jail: in chapter 1, the jail scene is a very big and important scene for susie, and treated very seriously. In chapter 5, it is the exact opposite; a short gag. Also, eating the moss is optional in 1 but necessary in 5.

Jevil: Jevil is rarely mentioned in chapter 1, but chapter 5 has many, many mandatory things referencing him.

Castle: chapter 1's catsle is very short, while chapter 5's Castle has 2 whole areas of the chapter dedicated to it

King: King in chapter 1 is only seen at the near end of it, while Asgore in chapter 5 is shown many times in the dark world.

The chapter is perceiving the past in a completely different way, making things seem more lighthearted than it actually is.

There's probably some more evidence, but this is what I have for now. If I find more, I'll put it here.

:friend:

great take on ch5, given the amount of guest musicians they had this chapter (even Flower Man wasn't Toby's thing) this seems to be what he was going for

Thank you :)

yeah

this makes sense

this is apollo-proved. here is the apollo stamp of approval

Yaaay :D

Smells like :plue:

The Light World theme of the chapter also works on that. Even in the weird route it’s a False Look about the past. Also a Very Very Secondary theme of Heteronormativity and Gender(Festival King and Queen, Seth, The Seth&Aqua Dialogue, Susie Weird Route, Kris and Noelle’s past of fighting who’s king and queen, etc). Even Aqua uses “Girl” in quotes instead of Girl without quotes like Orange, which is very telling for a Kris themed character.
Edit:I forgot Ralsei’s Dress Accompanied by “It’s how you present yourself”(He/They Icon though). I also Forgot Floraddins Playing with Sexuality and Gender and The Non-Traditional Presentations of Blue and Orange. The Hot Gamer Girlfriend/Boyfriend Comments is fulfilled by Flowery Either way somehow, Floraddins Play with Lancer’s Lines about Being a Boy, Yellow Being Nonbinary(Cowboy, Not a Boy) but using he/him pronouns to show pronoun and gender differences along with the It/It’s Floraddins that can call themselves a Man,a Woman, and An Adult. Even Flowery Being Designed off of Rudy is a sexuality and gender topic.(Also Blue*Yellow But I don’t want to get in trouble for shipping even if it’s as canon as Suselle)

Uhhhhh... What's that got to do with the topic?

In the weird route Susie says “Whatever we are, that’s better” when referring to her and Kris while calling King and Queen Restrictive. That’s why.

Ah, understood.

It seems very telling that the Restrictiveness of The Festival King and Queen is mentioned regardless of route.

:jalse:

You can literally just choose do not

the power of moss compells you

Flawed perception of the past is extremely relevant, though I think Asgore's approach to the dark world is also interesting within this framework in how the like, nostalgia world stuff he kind of stonewalls minus in his words 'playing along', and how lingering on that singular horrible day and focusing on that single aspect to all others is Also a distortion, and does not really uh. Save him, ig?

Not the best at phrasing these things on the fly, but you get the idea.
