When an object, like a jack of spades or a pencil, it will usually turn into some sort of fantasy item or a darkner, like Lancer or the wooden sword. In some cases, like Noelle’s wristwatch, it stays the same. Dark worlds so far always reflect the area they were made in as well as be substantially larger, like the computer room being turned into a digital city.
I’m curious about certain things, though. What if you tried to create a dark world in a forest? Would it not work, spread across everywhere the (assumed) smoke can or just encompass that forest? Or if you created a dark world in a giant closed stadium? How big would the dark world get? And finally, what decides how items are transferred into dark worlds? Is there some sort of special property that decides if it stays the same, becomes a slightly different item or become a darkner?
This can lead to some more fun questions though. Like if I took my weird unlicensed CatNap plush would it turn into CatNap from Poppy Playtime or something else? If it could turn into whatever character the item represents, what items would you want to bring in? ALSO, could I theoretically take a film set for, say, the Minecraft movie and create a dark fountain there to have it turn into Minecraft? Realistically it would just turn into a film world, but imagine if Deltarune characters could literally mold their own worlds like this.
I’m pretty sure the reason noelle’s watch did not become a darkner is because she was wearing it.
But also does this mean I can chuck that mcdonald’s steve toy into chapter 3 and then get steve???
It could be that objects only become Darkners if they were in the room the moment the Fountain was made. But, once they turn into a Darkner once, they get to be a Darkner every time.
This would explain why objects Kris carries only become Darkners in the case of Lancer and RK. It all depends on if they were in the room when the Fountain was first made.
…Though why there’s still objects in the Dark world like the board and castle, why THOSE haven’t turned into Darkners does mean this can’t be the complete answer.
We know Dark Worlds represent the will of the Fountain. Darkners that don’t match it are turned to stone. They even bend the leader of that world to that will (Anniversarry livestream, Toby says the Fountain could have corrupted King. In Chapter 2, the Music Trio say Queen suddenly got a lot worse after the fountain was made)

Possibly. It also appears that dark worlds also take shape from some items, so it’s a fine line between darkner and building.
Honestly it’s probably just random luck lmaooooo.
I think that Darkner transformation only occurs if the item is not being worn or held by a Lightner, also, I believe that brand name does not matter, since Dark Worlds typically encompass a general concept, rather than a specific brand or type of product in that category, which is why the Cyber World wasn’t specifically themed after a tech company (Real OR Fictional), and was generally just tech-themed. Same thing for Card Kingdom, no character is a specific type of card or pawn, but more of a general embodiment of that item.
Wait you’re saying, Chicken Jockey is canon to Deltarune? /j
Size and shape probably also have something to do with it. Think about it, the things that became Card Castle and Queen's Mansion are very large, and also made of only right angles. Tenna becomes a Darkner, sure, but TVs that old aren't gonna be right angles. If an object is large and flat enough, it might become part of the Dark World itself, as opposed to other objects that don't (for example, small PLAYING CARDS like Lancer, King, Rouxls, etc.)
lancer couldve been a house:skull:
With Chapter 4, I now think it depends on the person making the Dark World. Like how the Quill Pen can become either a weapon or a Darkner.
From what we’ve seen, Dark Worlds aren’t ever expanding, and opening the door to one doesn’t envelope the rest of the world. I’d assume in an open area, the Dark Workd would stick to one location. For example, opening one in a pond would result in only the pond getting enveloped.
GUYS I ACCIDENTALLY STABBED MY FRIENDS TV WHEN HE WAS WATCHING MY LITTLE SISTER CANT BE THIS CUTE AND IT MADE THE SPARKLES IM SO COOKED!!!
-Some guy, who is extremely cooked
I do very often wonder about the opening a dark fountain outside question
I feel it should be apparent that the dark world is created based on the perceptions of lightners, especially the fountain’s creator. The watch stays a watch and Chairiel stays a chair, in my view, because these are seen as accessories of lightners, part of their image, like how Susie’s jacket becomes a cool ripped coat, not a jacket darkner.
I believe that a dark fountain allowed to pour out darkness outside could eventually envelop the world, which would mean the roaring. I feel that the roaring happens once enough darkness is released from the depths that titans will be able to appear anywhere (meaning that everything would be dark worlds), and that, although all the dark worlds so far are fairly contained, they need to be sealed to prevent this risk, and some of them have even slightly leaked out on-screen.
I don’t know what would happen with Catnap plush. We’ve seen Seam look pretty different as a plush versus a darkner, but we haven’t really seen a darkner based off an object that’s supposed to represent a fictional character in the light world, as far as I remember at the moment. I don’t know what would happen, it’s a good question to ask.
The Minecraft movie set would definitely have Minecraft stuff in the dark world, the setting and objects around are Minecraft stuff.
Magic is always indescribable, but as long as it doesn’t contradict itself, it should be fine
My main question is, what happens to insects in the dark world? are they the same? Do they change like lightners? are they even considered lightners? If not, what are they?
They turn into those little fairy things that you see near the Toby Room and MushRoom in Snowdin and Waterfall, respectively. From Undertale, obviously.
I’d assume they’d change like Lightners. They’re by no means Darkners, as that would be calling a living thing an object.
