After the events of UNDERTALE's genocide route, GASTER found Chara in the depths and held them in a flipping chokehold, and after some resistance killed them for killing his entire family and kingdom, causing his LV to rocket up to Infinity. As such, he crafted a VESSEL to store this LV within, so he could make DELTARUNE in peace. This VESSEL was banished (it's not the player's vessel, don't worry) away from UNDERTALE, DELTARUNE and the depths, and sent away to a new world, one where naught existed. There they gradually bled LV until a crude world was forged, one filled with suffering. The VESSEL, now emptied to a point where it could coexist with itself (still brimming with LV though) looked onto this writhing world with pity, and so gave itself up to save the suffering land, leaving 2 children left to govern the remaining world.
The world was vast, and was split into two sections, one for the eldest child and one for the youngest. The youngest could not manage their land though, for lack of experience, so the eldest ruled the world until their sibling could inherit their land.
However, as time passed the younger sibling began to believe the elder one was restraining their rightful land from them, in order to control the whole world, them along with it — and so, when they came of age, they weaponised their land with a powerful weapon known as HATE. The elder sibling saw this, and became paranoid that the younger sibling was planning to steal their land, and so filled their lands too with HATE, leading to a vast war between the two. In the end, warlords emerged from within both their ranks and consolidated power, eventually reducing both siblings to near mortals, albeit with enhanced ability and everlasting lifespans. As time went on, however, these warlords were overthrown in revolutions, and those states waged war with each other, until 4 superstates remained, 2 for each historic domain:
Hearts and Diamonds for the elder sibling's former land,
and Clubs and Spades for the younger sibling's former land.
As for the siblings themselves, the elder one gave up on this world and confined themself to a vast library, one within a rift of space and time, where and whence they could observe all the world without issue. Within this library they studied the world and planned their return to GASTER.
The younger one, meanwhile, had been drastically injured and bled LV, reducing themself to a mere shade of their previous power. Ashamed, they took on a new name, one as fragmented as their form:

5949d5.
Oh, and new tag btw: "au".

At first, the four nations were in relative peace, albeit with tensions.
The Clubs kingdom kept trade relations with the Spades, but they became distant otherwise. Meanwhile, the Diamonds kingdom engaged in a long period of aggressive macroeconomic policy, dominating in production & trade, so much so that no kingdom waged war on them lest the Diamonds hire the other 2 kingdoms to destroy their opponents. The Spades kingdom excelled in architecture, constructing glistening palaces and sprawling cities at low cost, enforced by their strong alliance with the Diamonds, preventing any army from invading them. The Hearts kingdom, meanwhile, dominated in sheer military might, exploring and conquering new territories rapidly, so much so that they became a full empire.
Each kingdom was ruled by a monarchy, whose monarch was selected by meritocratic officials from a number of noble families, to ensure that they had true talent.
After ~250 years of peace, 5949d5 came to the ruler of the Hearts empire in a purple cloak, bearing naught but their eloquence, sharpened from decades of experience, and provided idea instilled within their monarch's mind.
That night, a dutiful mail-carrier was sent from the empire of Hearts to that of the kingdom of Clubs, the contents of which discussed an alliance against the Diamonds and the Spades, to equalise the political playing field. This message was intercepted, villainised relayed by spies to the Spades kingdom, which sent out a military force (for the Diamonds kingdom had sparse troops) to the Hearts empire, led by the prodigy general Eyr'ou, who avoided most Hearts soldiers and surprise-attacked their capital city, using devious tactics to seize the central palace within days. Eyr'ou then proceeded to plunder the capital for everything it had, holding their monarch hostage, before returning to the Spades kingdom, celebrated as a hero. This led the Hearts empire to declare war, without the aid of the kingdom of Clubs, who had never obtained the letter of alliance (but chose not to accept the Diamonds kingdom's offers of wealth, and remained neutral) against the Spades, largely destroying their military until Eyr'ou came forth with their troops and, with an army of 10,000, decimated the Hearts empire's cities, forcing surrender in 3 years despite their seemingly-overwhelming military advantage. As a result, the Hearts empire was forced to pay massive amounts of wealth, their military was restricted, and a significant mass of their territory was given up to the Spades, who became an empire.
The Hearts empire in secret, and in hate of the Spades who had humiliated and hurt them, secretly developed a special type of weapon — magic. But not any magic that any fictional character could wield. This was Hate magic, and they used it, and committed genocide against the Spades with it, and captured Eyr'ou, hanging them from the spire of their palace, where it was said they hung for 12 hours and 25 minutes before dying.
But.
The Spades empire were a crafty people, and stole this Hate magic for themselves.
And what they did with it upheaved all of society forever.

And the mail-carrier pressed ever-onwards to the Clubs kingdom, undeterred by this madness.

The Spades, via a spy whose name has been lost to history, discovered the secret to Hate magic, and secretly honed it for themselves, until theirs far exceeded the magic of the Hearts empire. Then, they unleashed it, causing an event known as the Hollow. The Hollow was an explosion of sorts, destroying the Hearts empire, forcing their distant colonies to strive away and become their own nations. The Clubs' kingdom's land crumbled, and their kingdom fell into a vast sinkhole, over which earthquake rumbled and shook, trapping their people underground. The kingdom of Diamonds were the most distant from the explosion, giving them time to sacrifice 40% of their population and 26% of their total wealth in a hurried ritual that lifted their land into the sky, losing 10% more of their population in the process. Their government was soon overthrown.
The Spades empire, on the other hand, was wreathed in shadow, its citizens becoming a dark people, everyone gaining powers of shadow and shade. Their monarch sealed away Hate magic, having become disillusioned with its destructive potential. For this rite they paid with their life.
Underneath the surface, the Clubs kingdom at first tried to carve out an underground empire, but they quickly came to an even greater prospect; a source of vast power, the Archenstone. With the Archenstone, they constructed a portal in the heart of their kingdom, one that took their people at will through to an unsettled land, one of the surface, a free land.
The Hearts colonies meanwhile battled for limited resources, and eventually 12 tribes emerged. These tribes waged war, peace, and everything in between, untouched by the main continent for decades.

Years passed.

The Spades kingdom was ruled by Queen Harnect, a solitary, calculated ruler who lead with strict law, but fair.
The Clubs kingdom was ruled by the Government, for the last monarch had died without an heir, and all the 5 royals who were qualified fit for monarchy were too young to rule.
The Hearts tribes were doing some shenanigans or something. Probably killing each other in unique and impressive ways.
The Diamonds kingdom was ruled by King Teron II, a wise and enigmatic ruler with a wry sense of humour.

And 5949d5 wandered in search of a certain someone.

The Spades kingdom was vast and powerful, its people enwreathed in shade and shadow. But with this came too a culture, one of secrecy, where privacy was valued above judgement, allowing for criminal groups to operate commonly through the streets. Queen Harnect began a campaign to cease these illegal movements, commencing forth a force of secret police and informants, who spied upon the people's privacy — or so she led the public to believe. In truth, there was no such intricate network, and these lies were told to keep criminal activity at its lowest, without needing to intrude upon the lives of innocent civilians. It worked.
However, this led to protests, which in turn led to government crackdowns, leading to more protests, in a viscous cycle that eventually led one radicalised individual, whose family had been locked up during protests, to sneak into the Queen's palace and spear her in her sleep.
With the queen dead, the Government assumed ruling stance over the country, held together by sheer bureaucratic coping, while noble dynasties selected a set of six skilled children as royalty, to be raised within palace and pavilion, so that one of them could become the next monarch — this was the way it had always been done, and how it always would be done, as long as the system remained in place.
These six children were:
Kcaj, an eccentric story-smith, a prodigy at eloquence, who bore the Emblem of Tira,
Eris, a magician who oft could be found deep within the royal libraries, who bore the Emblem of Genara,
Phindra, a determined albino who showed kindness to their friends but not their enemies, a master of the blade, of the Emblem Tira,
Enaru, a spirited orphan who frequently outplayed their elders at various games of skill, bearing the Emblem of Nora,
Sgong, a charismatic lancer, and a friendly rival to Phindra, bearing the Emblem of Genara,
And Renn, a mostly silent child who spent their days in solitude, whose rare words were always of genius, bearing the Emblem Nora.

As time passed, they matured, into a period between kindled childhood and adulthood.
One day, a riot broke out. One of the staff of the royal palace was to be punished, for failing to deliver a highly important letter on time. Phindra leapt to their defence instantly, calling the prosecutors by scandalous names, for the accused staff member had aided Phindra oft through their childhood in periods of distress and trauma, and when the prosecutors tried to take Phindra away, they were met with force, which was in turn met with force of their own — by the time the riot was broken up, Phindra had been badly injured, but the prosecutors had blackened eyes and broken legs.
A few weeks after the incident, when the people of the palace were still discussing it in rumours, Renn approached Phindra with an offer.
