EC: the main kids acually have a NORMAL session (aside from doc scratch fricking around with their session because he can) and beat the game normally with the help of the trolls whose session was unwinnable because they're all playing the sburb prerelease so it has glitches and isn't finished.
one of the kids in session (witch of hope) actually changes the writing of the story to make it have an ending, that's how they end up winning. the black queen is defeated by her future self (she is one of the exiles)

Random fact about my homestuck au, there is also the rings of life and void but they don't really do anything until the very end when they use the life ring to bring back human toby english because he got killed by Dr scratch in the very first act because he didn't want to deal with two tobies (he then got killed by toby, so the joke is in fact on him)
