What we know about Deltarune’s Ending

In this thread, I’ll be going over what we know about the ending. Well, some of it, once I show you how I learned what I did about the ending, maybe you can work out even more details of the ending.

Now, you probably think this is impossible. Surely, we know nothing about it! He didn’t say a word about the contents of the ending! Just that it was a dream that inspired the game!

…And sure. He hasn’t spoken about the ending directly. But, if he’s always wanted to make the game with THAT ending, then whatever it is, it couldn’t have been changed throughout the game’s development. So, we can learn quite a lot about it by ruling out things that would have changed throughout the game’s development.

For example, the Light World was originally going to be filled with humans. They’d only turn into monsters in the Dark World. The only way this couldn’t have changed the ending… is if the ending happened in a Dark World. As a result… we know the ending takes place in a Dark World.

This tells us some information. We will not see Castle Town’s fountain being sealed at the end. At least one Dark world (probably Castle Town itself) remains until the end. Else, the ending would happen in the Light World, which we know it doesn’t.

Lancer cannot play a major role in the ending. This is because his design was based off of Kanotynes’ card designs, meaning it didn’t come from the dream that started it all.

So yes. It’s actually possible to learn things about how the game will end. Who knows what else we can learn this way?

I have a feeling some one will die, maybe lancer, maybe Ralsei.
Or who knows, Susie might sacrifice herself

We can’t say much on that front. (Or maybe we can? No, probably not.)

This is specifically about what we can deduce definitively from what Toby has revealed about the game’s development.

The ending was a dream Toby had in 2011. Deltarune has always been Toby trying to make a game with THAT ENDING. This confines his development, because it means none of the changes he has made in the game’s development history could impact the ending in any way.

That’s how we know the ending must be in a Dark World. If it was in the Light World, the fact that all the Lightners (including Susie) were originally humans in the Light World, only monsters in the Dark World, would have changed the ending, because we’d go from seeing Human Susie in 2011 to Monster Susie in the final. But, if it’s in the Dark World, Susie was always a monster in the ending. This is also why Lancer won’t be in the ending. He wasn’t thought up until after the ending. So him being in there would be a change to the ending from 2011.

@Jacky720 You look like you’re good at axiomatic stuff. Taking as an axiom that the ending cutscene from 2011 has remained untouched for the entirety of Deltarune’s development, how does that constrain what the ending could be, when taking into account all the development changes we know happened? What else can we definitively say about the ending, just from the fact it cannot not have changed AT ALL since 2011?

Also, if you think we have reason to doubt that axiom, you can make a counterargument.

(If only I had a term for “using game development facts to definitively constrain future reveals before they’re supposed to be revealed”)

I just think it’s funny how Deltarune came to Toby in a divine vision
