Synonymous does not mean same, it means similar.

Jackets and hoodies are very similar compared to other clothing, but they are not the same.

Doesn't matter. If the guy who's making the game calls it a mantle, regardless of what it looks like, it's a mantle.

If I drew a mouse that looks like a rat that doesn't mean it's a rat. It's still a mouse.

When concerning their own creation, the creator's word is final.

Toby has called the pink thing on Kris's shoulder a cape, mantle, and ascot. Those all sound pretty conflicting to me.

The difference is he's only called King's mantle by one name.

Except it has been called more than one thing, because in Chapter 1 when King's HP is low the battle narration reads "KING's cape flutters weakly".

Fairchild's Dictionary Of Fashion, page 90's definition of 'cape':

"Although worn during the Middle Ages, a cape was more commonly called a mantle."

On page 363-364, under the definition of mantle directly:

![image](https://undertale.wiki/d/uploads/default/original/3X/d/3/d3c2e3e0606f66c5ba2fdd72d84ab53cdb881036.png)

It's just a cape without sleeves. King's garment being called a cape and a mantle is because a mantle in fashion is a cape without sleeves.

The fashion dictionary begs to differ from looks...? It seems that capes having slits for arms counts as sleeves despite it usually being called sleeveless? It's weird.

Traditional capes were sleeveless, but there are modern ones with sleeves

I don't see how that affects whether or not it's a cape though

Mantles seem to be in a really similar situation

</div>

Yup.

Which does mean that the semantic argument about whether King's thing is a mantle or a cape is pointless when the definitions are ambiguous and can encapsulate both things, and King's garment has been called both. And most definitions would agree that it's both, maybe.

Yeah at this point it's pedantry.

Toby said both because both can apply. (Also Toby said it so....)

I do love pedantry, is the problem, but I hate when primary sources like fashion magazines go 'capes are sleeveless except when they are not, hope this helps \<3'.

Net loss...

I disagree about queen, I think that queen got worse because of the internet outage, and it's just a coincidence (or not) that it happened when the fountains started opening.
