The direction we’re looking at isn’t necessarily lined up like a map, we could be looking at it where south is the top and north is the bottom
Unless of course there’s a npc who talks about the cardinal directions, in that case it’s just wrong lol
off the top of my head, ralsei at the start of chapter 1 tells you to go 'east' meaning right
and in chapter 5, if you backtrack to diner1, there's a floradinn in front of the bottom loading zone who says 'I'm making sure no one goes to the NORTH! / I realize now this may not be the optimal position. Oh well!', with the implication being that north is up
of course, neither of these are in hometown, but it seems like we're just going off normal map directions in general. i don't really see why hometown specifically would be an exception
