My second playthrough of chapter 3 I managed to beat roaring knight without even realizing I could obtain shadow mantle until later, I’m curious if anyone else did it with ought equipping shadow mantle.
I mean it IS possible if you're goated.

Yes, it's recommended to drop the mantle and go for damage/magic/tp boosting armours.
