Deltarune: handling Chapter info for returning areas/characters?

Since Deltarune is guaranteed to have a lot more wiki-writing than Undertale, how should this info be sorted and handled, and should the Manual of Style be updated for them?

I’m worried this may be an issue for returning areas, such as:

  • Hometown - For character locations, optional differences, Chapter Trivia
  • ??? - Optional differences, probably.
    (Side note: for some reason this area’s name is limited to 3 question marks on this post, even though I typed 6.)
  • Castle Town - For character dialogues, locations, area updates, optional differences/routes, Chapter Trivia

And in terms of returning characters, the main cast:

The main issue for character articles is that I am not sure how much writing should be done for them. I had tried match Undertale’s character articles of focusing on that specific character, but I believe the Susie article ended up being rather long because of that. It might be possible to trim it somehow, though.

In terms of Trivia points, all of these type of articles will have a lot. But something I have done to help editors and readers find related points is split them by related content. Should this be a reoccurring format?

The page organization policy is also very relevant here, and I agree the amount of chapters pose some challenges for these pages.

I think the repetitive location pages are going to require the most creative solutions. We’re already running into some issues here: Hometown’s NPC subpage has so many infoboxes that we’re running into issues properly indexing links for the entire page.

Maybe the solution here is sub-pages? Either sub-pages for each chapter, or what I more often see on other wikis is sub-pages for certain aspects of the article (what would be our main sections under the current PO, so “Main Story”, etc.) which are then linked to as tabs at the top of the article. That should lead to more manageable page sizes at least for character articles (it’s not a great reading experience to have to scroll through mountains of text to get to a certain aspect of a page).

Hometown should ideally be split into multiple articles if there is enough content for them. School is, I think, a good part of that page to split off into its own article.

The ?????? article isnt’t that long right now, and unless we have logical chunks of the area to split into new articles I think the information pertaining to that area is best left on that article. I don’t know why Discourse doesn’t like repeating characters like that. I had to insert a backslash to make the full location name appear.

Castle Town sounds like a good idea to split, but not right now. We’ll have to see what parts of the area are expanded upon. Maybe we can have an article for the Castle itself?

For the characters, I have no idea. Perhaps we can trim their sections to only mention an overview of how the characters act in respective chapters, and the most important events that happen. For example, the whole paragraph about the maze in Chapter 1 in Susie’s article could probably be cut down, since we’re supposed to have that information in location pages / chapter pages / etc. anyways.

The Hometown NPCs page that Gilbert mentioned is enormous right now, and the classmates could be split off into their own articles.

I would only use subpages as a last resort. I think we should prefer “GIGA Queen” or “Spamton NEO” to “Queen/In Battle” and “Spamton/In Battle”.

I think that even with the content already in Chapters 1 and 2, there is plenty of content that it makes sense to split to separate pages.

In terms of Castle Town, the Party Dojo already has plenty of content — enough to split to its own page. I think the Café could probably use its own page too, and expand a bit more on how it interacts with the Recruits mechanic. Potentially there’s a case for splitting Ralsei’s Castle, but I don’t think it could benefit as much from having its own page as the other two.

For Hometown itself, I think the main sublocations that could be split off are the ones that have Dark Worlds in them (School, Library, Toriel’s House). The only other Hometown location that really has much text at the moment is the Police Station, but I don’t think it necessarily benefits that much from its own page.

I think NPCs are the real area that there should be more splitting than there currently is. Especially Hometown NPCs, where there are quite a few fairly important characters who don’t have their own pages right now—characters like Jockington, Catti, Temmie, and Pizzapants. Beyond that, there’s a handful of characters that are not as important, but have a substantial amount to say about them who could also merit their own pages: Snowy, Bratty, Catty, Onion, Father Alvin, Napstablook, the Wet-Nose Bandits (a single page for the whole group), etc.

Likewise, I would argue that pretty much any of the named NPCs who move to Castle Town probably deserve their own pages, rather than being treated as background characters in a specific location. Most of the Castle Town NPCs are enemies so already have pages, so I think the main characters that this would end up giving pages to would be Pippins, Battle’s Master, the Royal Coat Rack, little ball, and the worm.

Personally, I think the only characters who should really be confined to lists without getting their own pages are characters that don’t have proper names, or literally only appear in one location in a single chapter (e.g. Fommt). Characters are often going to be found in different places in different chapters, so grouping characters by location is going to work less well than it did for Undertale. I would much rather lean towards giving characters pages when there’s a question whether they should be on a list page or have their own.

I do think GIGA Queen makes sense as a separate article, because it refers to the mecha specifically, not Queen herself (even though it looks like a large version of Queen).

Temmie does have a substantial amount of text already (about the same as the other classmates), so I think there’s already enough to justify a separate page. I expect we’ll probably see more of a character like Jockington going forward than Temmie, but I still think there’s enough content to justify giving Temmie her own page.

The main reason I didn’t suggest splitting Monster Kid is that I’m not actually sure if he’s named anywhere in Deltarune. At least, anywhere the player can see. I think it would be fine to split him using his Undertale name though.
